Here in the UK we have Direct Debit, by which we allow any company permission to take money from our account each month. It's underlined by the Direct Debit Guarantee, which means that if they take too much, I simply phone my bank and they give me the money back. No questions.
When is Slashdot going to realise (indeed, when is AMERICA going to realise) that there's an entire world outside of its borders?
It's fine, really. The discussion really ought to be why the US is still behind in terms of these types of transactions and payments.
I wouldn't trust a country with the "emperor of heaven" as it's head of state either
As opposed to president appointed under God? The difference being, of course, that the president has actual power, while the emperor does not. </blatant flame>
But I thought this was a heat of the moment crime? Oh well, in any case, premeditated murder is something that deserves a long sentence, but this doesn't seem like that kind of crime.
I didn't realise the goal is maximum sentence or revenge, rather than reasonable justice. In any case, 15 years is plenty of time for one murder, at least in this case and circumstances, IMHO.
Look at the headline. Now look at the question. Observe: "What non-obvious things can nerds who are so inclined do to help make a difference in November?". This question, being what is implied in TFS, is not partisan, is it now?
Those are some truly exorbitant prices. I pay about 5 euro per month for 30MB of data at 3.5G speeds. They take 25$ for 4MB at maximum 400-800kbit/s... I would be weeping tears of blood.
Speaking of correlation, who the hell tagged this story with "correlationisnotcausation"? As if the magnetic field would somehow align itself with the cows.
Some people keep talking about "intentionally bringing the building down". Here's how it goes:
Silverstein says they made the decision to pull it. This means they pulled out the firefighters, because they didn't want to risk any more lives than had already been lost. With everyone gone from building 7, no-one was there to put out the fires, and they raged until bringing down the building down as reported in TFA.
Building is empty except for firefighters. Firefighters are putting out fires. Nobody cares about the building anymore. Firefighters intentionally leave (pull out). Fires continue to rage. Building collapses. Hopefully the last few stragglers will now get this, so maybe we can avoid having it rehashed for the nth time.
The data guards the data guardians. Simply put all their personal info in there, including credit card numbers, and suddenly the guardians will be Nazis about keeping it safe.

But I thought all meat has the country of origin stated on the packaging anyway in the EU.. maybe it was purely a marketing gimmick?
So what's the difference between human and subhuman?

China, Russia and the Islamic countries (all own by Dictaroships) don't really care if they spy, cheat or lie
Not only dictatorships spy, cheat and lie.

Actually it's a sign of things to come in the future of air travel security.
What I'm wondering is, he says Nina told him "there'd be more of this Munchausen by proxy stuff, and he can't do anything about it".. what the hell?

You may upgrade your intellect now.
Well duh, it's for projecting images, not capturing them. It only supports one color and the blink tag, though.

That's probably not fair. I would assume it's possible to extend IE to do something similar, though it might not be quite the same.
Does Firefox do something fundamentally better with respect to this issue?
It cleans out new cookies and browsing history, and prevents third-party tracking images. What more can you get for personal privacy?

I've never heard of anyone saying "last week" meaning an arbitrary 7-day period.
Data guardians? Who guards the guardians?

I think you mean Go/igo-related. The term is dansu in Korean.
"Them" is also a shared word... I suspect mechanical treachery!
On the contrary, I bought Mount&Blade as a result of this article, so it was a good one.
Perhaps, though C is probably not the best example of language-enforced regularities.
It isn't necessarily that the language forces that disciple on the programmer, it's that the language forces it on the programmer's manager.
That's just the cat recognising your face/eyes, which isn't a problem for most cats.
