  1. . . . there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines. . .

Why bother with the voting machines when you can tamper with the voters?

Because tampering with the voters is what elections are about and nobody has really discovered a fool proof way of doing that yet. Meanwhile, what was released was probably actually real and not some sort of fraud. Even so, if we actually catch the people who did it, they'll get hit with a large stick. What I really worry about is that I doubt if the Republican and Trump servers have significantly higher security, so there is probably some of their info out there too. Could be they are just sitting on it, but there is the possibility it is being used to tamper with the lawmakers?

  2. "While Russia, China, other countries, outside groups and people are consistently trying to break through the cyber infrastructure of our governmental institutions, businesses and organizations including the Democrat National Committee, there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election, including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines," Trump said in a statement after the meeting.

OMG! That seems like an actual, complete sentence with a coherent message from Trump!

We let all three in my caucus group go and they pretty much had nothing to say but "It'll be nice to have a woman as President." One ex-Brit woman who is now an American replied "That's what I thought voting for Thatcher the first time she ran." Later I would usually ask H supporters, "Ok, besides that she's a woman and she's not Trump, what message does she have or why should I vote for her other than Bernie?" and usually got nothing. While I think she has much better experience, plays a decent backroom political game, and would be a better President than T, she doesn't have a fraction of the charisma or appeal to the public as any SNL character of her had.

While I'm no fan of the R's, not even a little bit, it's not just the R's that are the problem. The D's also want to keep the poor people in their place. Why do you think the D's candidate didn't win? If you think either party is going to help you, then you already have the strong delusion.

While I won't argue too strong, the main trouble seems to be that the Ds told the unskilled white workers the truth ( "Those jobs aren't coming back.") against the R's willingness to tell the people what they want ("I'll bring those jobs back to America."). Same thing happened to get Bush the Elder his job as President ("Read my lips; no new taxes." when new taxes came anyway). Truth is, if those jobs come back (and it wasn't a net loss for the US economically), automation or relocating in the US to the large coastal cities and not the mid-west is what will probably happen. Any real answer to the factory workers of the rust belt probably wouldn't resonate with them, that the new economy needs skilled workers in highly concentrated pools, so you can either get an education and move to the large cities, or ask for a government work program with expensive labor costs to make jobs. Instead, they bought into the job creator myth that if companies were to have to pay less taxes and make more profits, they'll create more jobs. Personally, I think that if there was any money being left on the table, the companies would get the loans to collect it already. Lower taxes may make some fields profitable, but I doubt there is that much to take advantage of. Anyway, we have a new R president and there is nothing to do but see if he can actually produce on his promises.

Well, it Tim Cook's case, IIRC, he was the supply chain master for Apple. He was the one that worked out all the deals so that the original iPhones had all the parts they needed while other companies trying to mimic it had to deal with non-ideal parts because he had tied up all production of the ideal parts. He worked on the vertical integration for Apple and, while not all that showy, no doubt made lots of money for Apple. He is presumably still doing this.

Actually, it is NOT renewable. About 360 million years ago, plants figured out how to make lignin. But it wasn't until about 300 million years ago that fungi figured out how to digest it. The intervening 60 million years was when most coal formed, as undigested plant matter piled up. Unless we wipe out all the fungi, large scale coal formation is unlikely to recur. It was a one-time thing.

Well then, we just need to genetically engineer a plant to produce lignin2.

Porn nowadays is a low-margin, high volume business. A small time recruiter is not adding enough value to be relevant, unless he's part of an established network.

Yes, but that's not what he really wanted; the videos created (18+) might have protected him from prosecution. No law says that your business must succeed - it's understood that most fail.

Not that simple, at least in WA state. I knew a couple that ran a fetish site and one time they told me all the stuff they had to go through to be legal. The documentation and paperwork for the models alone, probably required to prevent things like what you are suggesting, was a serious amount of effort. Basically every step of the process had to be documented and kept in a designated office space of minimum size that couldn't be used for anything else. Then comes the licensing, testing, weekly paperwork to be submitted on financials, etc. As I understand it, they had enough subscribers to make money, but in the end it wasn't worth all the effort.

  12. Yep. I think there is plans for a building even taller than the Columbia Tower. Not sure if it is Amazon's or not. Sort of relates to my time spent back in Trumpland for the holidays. It's hard to see their point of view when it seems the blue "left coast" states are booming economically. Of course, combine that with that many, if not most, of the people in Seattle are from all those states because we saw the writing on the wall growing up, got an education, and moved away from such economically and culturally depressed states. Hard to go into that with friends of the family as they tell you how their kids all dropped out of college because "it just wasn't something for them". The new industry seems to be high value manufacturing which works well with skilled workers with degrees (or at least relevant trained skills), preferably concentrated in a large job market pool.

In Seattle, a lot of it is. There is certainly a demand for new houses from investors and from people moving to the area. But the housing market is booming and people certainly are buying houses to remodel and flip on the market. I was just in the house buying market and there are just about no fixer-uppers left in the city, and even those sales are being determined by insane bidding wars between the buyers, and will most likely be back on the market the next year. Drive through some of the older neighborhoods with 50+ year old houses and you can tell that about half have been remodeled and repainted in the last few years. I'm not saying those house flippers are going to come out ahead in the long run, but it is certainly happening and driving the market that much more.

  14. Why is this on /. ? Too much eggnog by msmash ?

Because Seattle is one of the major concentrations of skilled computer labor? Microsoft, Adobe, Amazon, etc. are all here and hiring which is why the housing market is booming as all their employees with nice salaries are wanting to buy houses.

All these hot housing markets just show where there should be more development in new housing, especially more compact housing. Put some high rises in and around those neighborhoods along with more public transit and problem solved.

There is, at least in Seattle. A couple of new skyscrapers go up every year. Blocks are being turned into large mixed use condos and apartments in all the neighborhoods all over the city. There are reports that show that this is the only thing keeping Seattle's prices from really being insane. So far, this seems to be because once the home loan industry went bust, much of all that money that was in it that was managed to get pulled out, needed a new place to be invested. Now, instead of investing in home loans, they are actually investing in real estate. This drives the real estate market. Hot areas get invested in more, thus driving those markets even more. Makes it hard for people like me who just want to buy a house to live in as people are constantly buying them and flipping them to make for better investments who will buy them and then rent through some agency. So, even the old "bad" neighborhoods are all being remodeled and sold for lots of money.

  16. Sheesh, if he'd bought a $500 HD camera and a couple of lights, he could have made actual porn and turned a profit while still having fun.

I don't think so. First, porn hosting/streaming is expensive because most hosts refuse this type of content. Second, the market is saturated, largely by amateurs who work for free or for pocket change. And third, in that business you simply can't get paid; the reputable payment providers like Paypal won't touch porn, and that leaves ones that are either part of an existing distribution network or that are linked to organized crime and anyways it scares away a vast majority of customers. There are ways and platforms (like clips4sale) but the ROI is just not there, even if your investment is low.

On top of that, the requirements for running a porn site in Washington as such that you really have to spend a lot of time, effort and money to be legit. It's not something you could do at a loss just to get the "fringe benefits" this guy wanted. I knew a couple that ran a site for a while and one of them ran down all the work they had to go through. There are things like weekly paperwork accounting and recording everything, minimum requirements for office space that can only be used for certain purposes and nothing else, insurance, licensing, etc. It's a lot more than just creating media, putting up a site, and collecting money.

  17. Seriously Obama you are starting to make Trump look sane. The last thing the world needs is a new cold war, never thought I would say it but Trump can't come soon enough before you do any more damage, I can only assume you or your party has big financial interests that are not supported by friendly relations with Russia.

Unfortunately, cold war seems to be exactly what Russia wants. They've always had a chip on their shoulder as far as Europe goes and can be seen as the Abusive drunk uncle of Eastern Europe. Once the Union was broken up, they found themselves now surrounded by their former union mates who immediately tried to shield themselves from Russia. Their post break treaties with the Ukraine were broken once Russia had their nukes back. Rather than try to join the EU themselves, they are instead trying to create a new sphere of influence with themselves at the head involving their neighbors and anybody who will side with them against the US and EU. They've lost a great deal of status and the only way they seem to think they can get it back is to renew their position as cold war opponent of the US. They're not really trying for war but they do want their status as a superpower back and are willing to break a few eggs to get there.
