Actually the key space is significantly more restricted than this. The paragraph below explains this and is quoted from howstuffworks.com
What Do the Numbers on My Credit Card
Mean? Although phone, gas and department stores have their own
numbering systems, ANSI Standard X4.13-1983 is the system used by most
national credit card systems. Here are what some of the numbers mean:
The first digit in your credit card number signifies the system --
3=travel/entertainment cards (such as American Express and Diners' Club),
4=Visa, 5=MasterCard and 6=Discover Card.
The structure of the card number varies by system. For example,
American Express card numbers start with 37; Carte Blanche and
Diners Club with 38.
American Express: Digits 3-4 are type and currency, digits 5-11 are
the account number, digits 12-14 are the card number within the account, and
digit 15 is a check digit.
Visa: Digits 2-6 are the bank number, digits 7-12 or 7-15 are the
account number, and digit 13 or 16 is a check digit.
MasterCard: digits 2-3, 2-4, 2-5 or 2-6 are the bank number
(depending on whether digit 2 is a 1, 2, 3 or other). The digits after the bank
number up through digit 15 are the account number, and digit 16 is a check
digit.

I would suspect that this sort of legal problem would only apply to such people as the chat room and MUD monitors. This most likely would not be able to be applied to those doing such "professional" work as coding device drivers. Persons doing this sort of professional work are exempted from most of the labor laws in the US anyway since it is usually considered that their skill set will be sufficient to command a respectable wage. ________________

They sent out an e-mail to their customers this morning. I had just finished reading over this privacy policy when I checked/.. However the message they sent in no way indicated what changes had been made in the privacy policy, only that changes had been made. FYI: I am including the text of the message below.
Dear Customer,
We have just updated Amazon.com's privacy policy and, because
privacy is important, we wanted to e-mail you proactively in this
case and not just update the policy on our site, as is the common
Web practice. Thanks for being a customer and allowing us to

To read the updated Privacy Notice, visit:

Thanks again for shopping at Amazon.com.

Furthermore, on the privacy notice page there is also no indication of what might have changed. I tried to read through it but it was too filled with links for their various services for me to be able to understand what they were saying. ________________

One thing that you will have to be careful with is not to select boxes that are too large. On my last move I emptied one of my bookcases into the box that a 25" TV came in. No problem with the box, it was pleanty sturdy, problem is that I wasn't. That damned box must have weighed well over 200 lbs. ________________

The logic behind this seems pretty flawed to me. Roads cause cars? I really don't think that that is the case.
What is happening is that the cost (in both terms of time and money)of moving a packet is being reduced and as any economist can tell you all uses for that packet which are at least as valuable as the cost to transmit the packet will be used. The problem with this is that as the cost of moving a packet tends toward zero the value of the average packet will also tend toward zero.
When the internet is expensive it will only be used for its most valuable uses. Right now internet2 is very expensive and therefore is only used for valuable purposes such as scientific research. When this technology becomes cheap and generally avaliable it will be used for the most worthless things that you can imagine. ________________

I'm afraid that you can't do that. It's already been done. See this/. aritcle for some discussion. Lucky for all of us; that patent is due to expire next month. Just goes to show how long the patent office has had it's collective head up its ass. By this time removing said head from said ass is going to be extremely painful. Don't expect it to happen without a big fight. ________________

A radio telescope is a device for observing the electromagnetic emissions/reflections of distant objects. In this way it is exactly like a regular telescope. The difference is that a radio telescope is optimized to work in a different (and likely much wider) segment to the electromagnetic spectrum. The setup described here is much like a reflecting telescope except that the surfaces on the disk are not reflective to visable light, but are instead reflective to radio waves. Since it is not a requirement that the reflecting surfaces be reflective to visable light, it is possible to use materials that are stronger and more stable than glass. Therefore it is possible to make the device much larger and more sensitive to very weak signals. ________________

Thank you I'm glad that someone here is getting this right. It's pretty clearly outlined in the manuals that the BEST way to get a key is to have your correcpondant put the key file on a disk sign the file and hand the disk to you. You then open the key file and confirm the fingerprint with your correspondant. The whole process is safe from this (or any) attack. ________________

Nobody supports key escrow. Key escrow and ADK are completely different concepts. In the case of key escrow a copy of any key generated must be turned over to the authority. This is bad because then signing and decryption with that key can be done w/o your consent. In the case of a properly done ADK it is impossible for another party to make a signature using your key but it is possible for the party named when the key was generated to decrypt messages to you.
This is why PGP chose to implement ADK. When ADK is avaliable there aren't the risks associated with key escrow and users are less likely to do something as foolish as generating pgp keys and giving a copy of their private key to someone else for safekeeping. The flaw in this case is that due to a poor design the ADK can be inserted after key generation w/o the key owner's knowledge. ________________

Someone claiming to be (but we can't be 100% sure) Will Price, Director of Engineering, PGP Security, Inc....;-)
This problem does not have any impact upon the signing of messages. We do still know that messages signed by the key used by the person given the locical label Will Price, Director of Engineering, PGP Security, Inc. Division of Network Associates, Inc. Were in fact signed by that key and no other. (or at least as much as we have ever been able to be SURE) ________________

While you and most of the people here would probably be willing to pay ~$100-200 for such a device (I wouldn't, I'm pretty sure I could do it with my NAT box and an old 56k modem from my parts bin), most people would not. You have to remember where most people are with home networking right now. It just doesn't exist. Even if you count only those who have broadband access there are relatively few who have a home network setup and connected to the outside line. Why do you think that @Home et. al. put restrictions against using a NAT box to connect to their service? It's because most people wouldn't dream of doing it anyway. Why would somebody who only has 1 computer in their house be willing to spend 1 or 2 C notes to plug their Tivo into the $30 - $80 hub that they don't have or the $150 linksys NAT thingy that they don't have? They just won't they'll plug it into the phone line and let it make a 5 min. call at 3 in the morning like everyone else and be happy about it.
I'm not even sure if I'd be comfortable with plugging a Tivo directly into a broadband port. Despite what they say, I'm sure that they do some amount of preference tracking during those daily updates. Being plugged into broadband 24/7 would just make it that much easier to retrieve personally identified customer identification about me in real time. That just isn't a service that I need thank you very much.

PalmOS is able to interrupt the current process with reminders from the calendar and low battery warnings and things like that. What keeps this from being a true multi tasking system is that you must dismiss any warnings that it might throw at you before going back to whatever it is that you were doing. This sort of system is equivalent to the TSR programs that were popular back in the days when everyone used DOS. (hmmmmm.... nothing like pressing ctrl+alt+T so play tetris) ________________

25. Not too many years ago, the most common transportable storage media ther 5-1/2" flexable magnetic disks. Their flexibility led to their being referred to as "floppies." They have been replaced almost entirely with today's 3-1/2" disks, which are enclosed in hard plastic housing and which therefore are not flexible or "floppy." The earlier name, however, has stuck.
25. Not too many years ago(c. 30000 BCE), the most common form of round object was a square. Their complete lack of roundness caused them to be referred to as disks. Today we have invented the wheel and other things which are round. The earlier name for a square housing stuck and they continue to be called disks.

Can anyone explain to me just what the great advantage of true multitasking on a handheld device is? I must admit that I'm a little bit biased I have and love a Palm III, but I just don't see the point.
With PalmOS your applications are left in the state they were in when last in use. Yeah, they stop executing, but I've never really found that to be a problem. I can't imagine the utility of being able to run 2 applications at once on a screen that's only 240x160. At this screen size drag and drop between different application windows just won't happen anyway. Are you going to be able to do compiles in the background while doing something else in the foreground? I think not.
Best as I can tell Linux and multitasking are just buzzwords for the marketing folk. Sometimes you really need to pick the right tool for the job and it seems to me that PalmOS is the right tool for a long battery life palmtop/organizer type device. ________________
