The internet is laden with reports from people who have tried to disable/remove the Onstar radio that comes compulsorily built-in to all GM brand cars (so Chevvy, Buick etc).
Some people with older models have success, but its amazing how "coincidentally" many people find right after they disable Onstar all sorts of problems with what would logically be totally unrelated systems (commonly the cruise control and other miscellaneous engine lights) start happening that would require you to take the car to a dealer.
I fully expect car manufacturers like Tesla and GM will soon be blatant about it and just make their (note it was never really your) car completely inoperable if the "always connected" feature is in any way tampered with.
Intel have poured literally billions of dollars into R&D of their products for decades to get to where they are now.
I know there's a lot of clever people out there, but I'd be amazed if the open source community could ever catch up then stay with whatever Intel's current CPUs are for features and performance.
>> owners will pay more for connected-car services if they decline the ads.
I already won't buy any "connected car". I purposely avoid GM (onstar) and Tesla cars just for that reason. If it gets to a point where you literally can't buy any unconnected car any more, I'd either build my own or only buy cars where you can still hack the connectivity hardware out.
His quote: "Or is Intel basically saying 'we are committed to selling you shit forever and ever, and never fixing anything'?"
I think the record until now clearly shows that Intel's CPU products have actually been generally pretty good and that they actually do release fixes for their fuckups.
Let's put this into perspective: its a security hole not a major functional failure. People are having to get amazingly creative in finding new ways to break into anything. Basically anything even slightly complex has potential exploit risks, including Arm64 CPUs.
Linus needs to get real and give Intel a chance to do their thing.
Why would the US government really care about Iranians access to social media?
If Instragram, Facebook et al didn't all happen to be US businesses wuld they still give a shit?. Either that or they perceive a high value to the pro-US agenda brainwashing being actively pushed through such channels.
Given your average millenial apparently depends on social media for their self-worth, and surrounds themselves with sensationalist crap masquerading as news, what would you expect?
Us older people have simply seen enough to learn to appreciate the finite time we have left and not waste too much of it taking trivial or pointless shit too seriously.
>> safeguard electoral processes or face a future where democracy is more fragile
Look around. Nearly all so-called "democratic" governments are already working towards replacing democracy with dictatorship. Doing nothing in this case just speeds up their actual agenda.

Yep thats what I meant.
> There is high quality 8K source material, just not necessarily available to the public at this time.
Well its existence is irrelevant to 8k TV owners then isn't it?
Even on my 60" 4k OLED I honestly can't see the individual pixels unless my nose is right up to the screen.
Besides, there's still hardly any 4K content, let alone 8K. I can't imagine where you'd find a good source of 8K content that isn't compressed to fuck (so actually no visually better than compressed 4k) or even how you'd play it.
The Cable/Satellite TV market in the USA is dying on its feet, thanks to the big companies refusing to be flexible and alternative services like Netflix providing better options for less. The layoffs are all legacy/TV related and simply reflect this.
Well its on mine, but I'm hardly the average PC user.
It seems the average PC user is someone that knows little to nothing more than how to open a browser and office, and for them, Windows will always be better than Linux, simply because they know Windows already.
For the average person, just moving from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 apparently represents a significant learning challenge, (even though every version of Windows since XP looks almost the same and has basically been functionally identical) so for them, learning a whole new OS would simply be too difficult for them to consider, regardless of the many actual benefits and advantages over Windows once you're there.
I feel incredibly sorry for the poor North Korean woman who was staffing the Internet booth. I'm sure in the context of North Korea that's probably a prestigious job and she was clearly not in a position to do anything to solve the actual technical problem (which is probably to just bypass a ridiculously over-anal spying firewall).
I can only imagine what the Nork government are doing to her and 3 generations of her family right now because they interpret the incident to be that she caused a westerner.to see that North Korean infrastructure is anything less than perfect.
Of course I wouldn't expect any better from the NYTimes, but come on, really, this is a new low.
I am the last one to defend anyone perpitrating any kind of racism, including anti-semitism, or anyone hijacking online IDs, but dear NYTimes reader, does it really not even slightly bother you when the author jumps to labelling everyone/anyone conducting these crimes against him or any jews as automatically being a Nazi?
They'll figure out a way to make sure your car HAS to connect sometimes.

> do they *really* talk to each other like this, or do they think that guys like me are that stupid?
yes and yes.
I'll just uninstall their system, buy older cars, or even build my own before I submit to my car being always connected.

Then don;t ever buy a Tesla.

What about Far Left symbols?
UK, USA, Australia, any EU country.
Seriously.
Even Google, Facebook etc are actively searching for and removing anything they arbitrarily label as inflammatory.

The article is talking about 8k not 4k.

Exactly as I said.

Screw China. Fill the channel tunnel up with it. That way it both gets rid of trash and keeps the illegal immigrants out.

We? Who are you? I notice you only have ever made 2 posts, both about this story.

The Russian elections are a total sham. There's no way Putin isn't going to win.
if they're remotely displayed, yes it is.
