  1. Pick the Right Tool for the Job on Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Jump Back Into Programming? · · Score: 1

As an employed programmer that does everything from reading hardware schematics and writing C, to writing server code in C#, and finally writing all our build scripts in Python so they will be cross platform... I suggest learning Python as a way of getting back into things. I work in a variety of environments, embedded/linux/windows, and I had to make certain concessions in my code to account for the OS running the scripts, but Python was very easy to pick up and create useful things. I've managed developers who are very particular about whatever domain they're comfortable in, but if I can get the windows guys to install Python 2.x I'm golden. Always use the best tool for the job, while Python is great, I don't use it to build my .NET projects. MSBuild is better suited for that, no matter how clunky and painful it may be. This post is a bit muddy, so I mean to say if you're writing anything for your own personal improvement, use Python. Once you get your bearings, you may have to adapt and learn something else. Programmers are craftsmen, we should be skilled enough to work with whatever tools we're given.

I recently bought a PS3 for it's Blu-ray capabilities and it's ability to adjust to changing standards through firmware downloads. I didn't buy it because I wanted PS3 exclusive titles, I bought it because it made the most sense per dollar in terms of watching HD movies. It should be noted that my decision to buy a PS3 was preceded by my purchase of a high end HDTV television. I've been impressed with the PS3 in terms of hardware, compatibility with my WinXP 2003 x64 and media server (don't flame me for running the nightmare ;), and general design. It's quiet and doesn't heat up enough to cause alarm even when used during extended periods. Two days before my PS3 arrived bad things started to happen, my 360 Elite burned up the GPU. So now I sit and play my PS3, which is admittedly deficient in online play when compared to XBL, yet I'm thinking about selling my 360 Elite and all my games. What good is a console if I have to treat it like frail child? I haven't had my 360 for nearly a month due to repairs, yet MS offers one free month of live while still charging me for the current month that my console is in warranty and under repair. Sony has a lot of ground to cover in terms of installed console user-base, but Blu-ray and a system that doesn't break when you look at it funny might just be their ace in the hole.

I studied CS at the top of my class for two years of undergrad and sought summer internships at medium to small companies, and what I found to be "expected" salary if were to be hired full-time was much less than I imagined (around $35k a year as an entry-level dba or internal developer.) Granted, I live in medium size midwestern city, but that's not enough to justify $25k in student loans. I'm scheduled to test as an inside wireman (union electrician) in 2 months which offers me ~$50k a year without overtime. In addition, I am finishing night school and have plans to finish my grad school application in about 8 months. I'll be working full-time earning a salary in the building trades that affords me enough to be comfortable, and still have the time and resources to finish a grad school program (MBA) in about 2 and half years while taking night and weekend classes. I stand to earn $67.5k more in the meantime without stepping foot into an IT dept. Sure, I'm gambling with the idea of experience in the field... but the truth is, after seeing the numbers, the only IT job I eventually want is CIO. Everything else seems to be expendable.

So cops are allowed whatever means necessary to "subdue" the purported perpetrator? Does that mean that if I refused to open my car door while being stopped for a seatbelt violation the officer is allowed to use whatever means necessary to obtain the information he so desires with complete disregard for the rights of the civilian? Wow, your post was spoken like a true county officer reservist, just pussy enough to hide behind a false idea, and hardly man enough to wear a badge full-time. You're high if you think it's okay to use whatever means necessary, when in fact, the appropriate force needed to "subdue" a civilian is nothing more than an arm behind the back and a knee to the lower spine. Tasers have killed people, and they're a function of laziness, if not out right fear by those that are supposed to keep us safe. University police, puberty police, grow a fucking spine.

I remember being a fan of the original SimCity, and when it came out for the NES I bought it so I could play on a larger screen. However, two buttons (A & B) and no shortcuts could hardly compete with a keyboard/mouse combination.

The PS2 has 10 buttons (if you count the analog sticks) - so hopefully the can overcome the control problem suffered by many games that are ported from PC to a console.

It would be really cool if they built in a control mode that would allow a gamer to use the USB keyboard and mouse that come with the PS2 Linux Kit and retain all of the control functionality of the PC game.

Bush has been attacked many times for his lack of eloquence when speaking. His knowledge of foreign policy has been questioned, but he has maintained an undeniable composure comperable to that of the common man.
This really reminds me of the election of Andrew Jackson, when the power of the common man overpowers the merit of those who have been molded to be politicians.
Bush has addmittedly done cocaine, he has been arrested for a DUI, he has owned his own business, and most importantly... he is a someone with which many people can identify with!
Bush has his pitfalls and shortcomings, but there is an undeniable reason for his election, and that is obvious.
