True that the US has taken a few misteps in governing the Internet (mostly related to puritanical zealotry). But we have seen what happens when the world comes together to agree on something, take a look at the UN. What a worthless organization.
Mod parent up! The target audience for a educational book is rarely a good reviewer of the book. The parent points out one good example. But also, what if the book contained syntatical errors? How would a 'target audience' reviewer ever know the difference.
The review does a good job of recognizing that organization is the key to a educational book. All this information is publicly available (in MS's KB, MSDN, etc). The reason you're buying this book is because the information is supposed to be presented in a easy-to-learn format.
1. Think up ideal solution to a problem. One which can't really be solved economically. 2. Press Release saying you've solved the problem cheaply. 3. Profit! 4. Never follow through, cause it would be too expensive.
And really we should look at what we did right in the last 100 years, that kept up alive despite those things. Then ask the question 'how do we apply those lessons to the future to insure our survival?', learning from the past is the only way to prevent its repetition.
No consumer content will be safe from copying until they can beam it straight into our heads. Both video and audio, you can always plug the output device into an input capture device and copy it that way. And with new digital transmission mediums the quality can be kept very high (compared to those who remember the VCR-to-VCR via RCA cables days). Not to mention that any encryption scheme that can be decoded can be broken. It's only a matter of time.
Anybody else notice that it was only moving 3.4mph (5.5km/h). That doesn't sound very fast to me. I'll admit I don't know how space craft are built, but I wouldn't think that would do terrible damage. Or am I missing something?
Does it really matter when 90% of people are happier not knowing, and will fight to stay that way? We protect people from the "horrible truth" all the time. You should see the looks on people's faces when I tell them how the meat industry tenderizes steak. I have no problem with it, still tastes good to me. In the same line of thinking, I don't care how the rice produced these proteins, so long as no humans are harmed in the process.
So your familiarty with Gentoo allowed you to make "source level" changes. But your unfamiliarty with FreeBSD prevented you from getting X running. So one is better than the other how??
FreeBSD does pretty well on new hardward. Sure it might not support the newest bleeding-edge hardware for a few months. But lets face it, not many of us have that kind of hardware AND are looking for a secure, higly stable platform like FreeBSD (or any other BSD for that matter).
The FreeBSD support community is top notch (mailing lists, handbook, man pages, forums). I've been using FreeBSD at home and in a production environment for a few years now. I know it, I like it, so I may be a little biased. But don't bash on an OS simply because you are unfamiliar with it.
I think ICANN has fallen in to the same pit as any other "Governing Body". We may have finally defeated the stupid.xxx idea, and here comes the next brain fart.
Just what do they plan to do about the 1.1 million "John Smith"s that live in the use (not to mention any other countries? Append a number? Gee that sound familiar.
I can see some excelent uses of the.tel domain. Especially for straightening out the IP phone problems private companies are proprietarily solving themselves. But ICANN will never think of pratical applications.
All these governing bodies should be returned to the only people who really governed well in the first place, educational institutions. But that's just my $0.02
I have a 5.1MP Camera. More than half of the pictures I take are at 640x480 shots to post on the web. What I really want in a camera phone is some level of zoom and the image quality posted by parent.
I haven't seen any camera phones with any real level of zoom. I understand most zoom lenses take alot of space, but couldn't they come up with something, anything!
I hear you buddy. I have Asperger's as well, and I have the opposite problem described in the article. I have a very hard tim telling if someone is interested in what I have to say. Being a geek, I'm very accustomed to blank stares of confusion.
But it's nearly impossible for me to tell if someone is anything in the mildly interested to not interested range. I can recognize large interest, and boredom. The middle is a gray area, and I've gotten used to assuming people are not interested in me. This assumption made an incredible impact on the number of friends I have and social situations.
So where do I buy one?
The onboard battery on HP equipment is purposely small enough that taking the main battery out for a week+ will reset the password. Was told this by my HP sales man (must have found the one sales guy that knows his stuff there). I've had to do it several times before, always has worked for me, desktops you have to take the cmos batter out of, same week wait too.
I think you mean "-1 Flamebait" not Troll. He obviously trying to stir up the hornets nest over which architecture is "better" and more capable of future growth.
Architecture has less to do with the ease of movement than DRM, and the general stigma that has penetrated the media industry. We'll need an intellectual revolution before any of this technological revolution can take place.
The monitors never actually ran off the computer's power supply. It just used the switch in the powersupply to turn the monitor on and off.
Mod your current power supply if you want to run monitors off it. IEC Female
Just run the wires to where the power comes in.
Then use something like this Converter or dig out an old IEC Male to IEC Female "extention" cord.
Mod parent up!

"If it aint broke don't fix it" applies here.

You talk about today's technology like it's permanent. I suppose 640K is engouh for you too?
I passed the quiz, no real surpise. It's quite easy just looking at the pictures, when you know what you're looking for.
Every single "safe" site had a "Support" or "Forums" button. None of the "unsafe" sites did.
That's because the unsafe sites support would have the FBI on them in a second from this guy.

Yet Another Killer. Does anybody believe these guys anymore?
What decade are you living in? Most all laptops these days use the standard slimline cd-rom. They just have a different front bezel attached.
