Only very few animal type make up most of human consumed meat, a few breeds of cattle, sheep, birds and pigs.
True, but the parent's point is valid. From a genetic survival standpoint, because these particular animals are in high demand for eating by humans, the species survive through humans' skill at animal husbandry. Sure the majority of the species is slaughtered as soon as it's mature enough to eat, but the species lives on. So, the t-bone steak, leg of lamb, strips of bacon, or pile of hot wings (all of the above?) on your plate all came from heroic animals who sacrificed themselves so that their respective species live on. We should honor them by savoring their flesh accordingly.
If we have all of our meat lab-grown, then what do we do when Hereford cattle are on the endangered species list? If the Spotted Owl didn't genetically evolve to taste like filet mignon, is it our fault if it dies out?
Thanks budgenator, this is fantastic. I copied and saved this to my quotes file on my PC. I have a friend who is a total narcissist.
Let's add (in social situations): - Often seen buying the newest and flashiest items and makes sure you know about it - Constantly asks you what you think about his new girlfriend. Do you think she's hot? No really, what do you think? - Your ranking on his list of social priorities falls on what benefit you can bring to him. Be prepared for him to bail on you at any time. "Oh, well this new bar opened up, sorry I missed your birthday."
Yeah, your number 6 is right on. Just eliminate these people from your life. Needless to say, I don't hang out with this "friend" much, anymore. Funny enough, the moment I started ignoring his emails, the more he emailed trying to get a response. I think it's easy to buy into these people when you are younger. When you get older, become a little wiser, and hopefully build up your self-esteem and self-respect, you can see the bullshit coming from a mile away and/or you can feel the black hole of attention-seeking ready to swallow you whole. Run away or ignore them.
If you are stuck working with these personalities, be prepared to get ideas taken from you, have credit taken for your hard work, getting asked to "do favors" by working on their pet projects instead of your own work. Always, ALWAYS deal with these people in writing (emails, document, signed requirements, etc. - actually, deal with writing for any work-related matter) If this person runs your company, well, good luck?
Sure, they don't charge for it. But, society pays for it since these religious groups generally don't pay taxes for a lot of things.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit_organizati on "...however religious non-profit entities like churches are subject to less rigorous federal filing and reporting requirements than many other tax-exempt organizations. Depending on the state in which they are located, they may also be exempt from some of the inspections or regulations governing non-religious groups performing the same services..."
Sure, God may not need a starship or a team of lawyers, but shouldn't his followers be subject to equal taxation to at least to every other non-profit group? Don't get me wrong, I think Scientologists are a bunch of nutbags, but why do some "religions" get breaks because they happen to have more people that believe their story? Why shouldn't Flying Spaghetti Monster t-shirts be tax free?
I think the 747 is a poor choice to pick here for a 5 hour trip, as these are usually geared toward flights of 10 hours or more. Plus, these long routes cross oceans, impassable terrain, etc. that a car cannot simply do, and a plane can do a direct route of flight, whereas typically a car would have to do a bit longer route. So, perhaps a better comparison would be a 747 versus a ship for a transpacific/transatlantic route for fuel consumption. An Escalade would be better compared to, say, a 737. Of course, for the Escalade, you have to take into account the emissions from all 8 passengers eating Funyuns and Beef Jerky on the 2821 mile, 47 hour (based on 60 miles per hour) journey, assuming that this is not their usual diet. At least you can roll down the windows on the Escalade.
If I had mod points, I'd raise this up. People will do just about anything to "not die" instead of "live". Taking a vitamin, herb, or supplement to enhance your life, make you perform better, healthier can be great - if it works for you. The problem is that when stuff like this happens and food gets broken down into "components", people tend to go into a frenzy over it. Also, with the low-fat, non-fat stuff here (in America) people tend to see "Low Fat" and go crazy and end up eating MORE fat (and consume more calories) than they would otherwise. This biotech bacon just seems like a marketing gimmick to sell THEIR bacon, and if it's developed, people will probably eat more bacon, which, in the long run, might be unhealthier anyway. Who knows what kind of side effects could develop down the road from GM bacon...
I have real bacon, eggs, real butter, and WHOLE milk in my fridge. Why? Because I like the taste! I also know that if I consume a stick of butter and a pound of bacon a day, odds are that I won't live too long, so I eat them sparingly. (But oh what a delicious life it would be!)
Thanks to the parent - reminds me I need to start planning my garden! (and I finally get a topic relevant to my nickname)
"And if you're religious at all, take pride in the fact that you will not be eternally marked with the sin of helping destroy the lives of your fellow humans."
Judging the amount of SUV's I see in church parking lots, you better hope Jesus is as forgiving as you say he is...
Grr...I just bought an iBook recently, trying Apple out for the first time since the Mac Classic, and while I've been impressed with everything so far, the Quicktime Upgrade popup really sh*ts me. I bought the machine, why can't I have a regular version of quicktime that doesn't harass me??!!
Fortunately, I discovered VLC, so Quicktime has been relegated to a remote corner of my hard drive...
From the article: Are straw-bale buildings a fire hazard? The National Research Council of Canada tested plastered straw bales for fire safety and found them to perform better than conventional building materials. In fact, the plaster surface withstood temperatures of about 1,850 F for two hours before any cracks developed. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, "The straw-bales/mortar structure wall has proven to be exceptionally resistant to fire. The straw bales hold enough air to provide good insulation value, but because they are compacted firmly, they don't hold enough air to permit combustion."
Are straw-bale buildings acceptable to my local building code? Most cities and counties have adopted one of three or four model building codes. City, county, and state building codes may be different. Straw bale is acceptable to some codes, and not acceptable to other codes.
More and more areas may have accepted straw bale housing construction in the last 10 years.
I've been fascinated by the possibilities of straw bale homes. Doing a quick Google search turns up this link (from 1995):

Interesting to see the discussion about Greedo shooting first. Anyone reading that has the Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD box set? My initial thought when I saw it was that Lucas/Spielberg edited the storyline, making the guy with the giant sword throw it at Han, er, Indy, miss by a mile, and THEN Indy blasts him.
Please tell me they didn't change that.
Thank you.
