Mod parent up. I also believe that many of these pharmaceutical companies should make their sequencing data of other organisms (read: pathogens) available to the public. This will make the drug discovery process much faster when more minds are thrown into the mix. Keeping data like this behind closed doors may be a good business model, but it certainly does not help the state of affairs in infectious diseases.

  3. Re:Adaptations? on Behavior May Influence Evolution · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but you're way off base here. An evolutionary adaptation is "any evolutionary process that increases the fitness of the individual, or sometimes the trait that confers increased fitness, e.g. a stronger prehensile tail or greater visual acuity. Note that adaptation is context-sensitive; a trait that increases fitness in one environment may decrease it in another." Evolution - Wiki. I'd hate to use Wiki as my source, but it's the quickest way to "prove" what is already known in this case.

The trait that increases fitness in this case is short legs. This brings up another point: allele frequencies within a population. On the genetic level, allelic frequencies shift in accordance for traits that are selected for and against. So, your last statement on proportion actually supports the notion of evolutionary adaptation in this case.

Aren't both candidates against gay marriage? I was under the impression that the MAJORITY of America AND both candidates are against gay marriage (not necessarily civil unions). I really don't understand what you're getting at. This is also ANOTHER reason why the dems could not swing any southern states. Your caricature of southerners pretty much sums up the arrogance that just turns those voters off. I've heard it many times "You're an idiot hick if you vote for Bush". There's no reason for any of that mess and it simply does not help your cause to get Bush out of office by making his own voting base believe stronger in their candidate. No one likes to be insulted. To be clear, I am also disappointed in this election, but I am not all that surprised. The democratic platform, to put it nicely, sucked. They had all the firepower in the world against Bush, but had neither the candidate nor the strategy to pull it out. This should evoke a need for the democrats to look in the mirror to assess why they could not defeat a candidate such as Bush. Preaching to the choir (i.e. complaining to the democratic base and the rest of the world as to why Bush sucks) does not swing an election. You have to win the hearts and minds of those that you do not already have.

I got my standard Krypto U-Lock with cable for about $30. The only problem I have is that I just put $800 into my mountain bike and now I can't use my U-Lock.....I'm restricted to a cable and padlock I had laying around. Kryptonite is supposed to contact us personally mid-October for the replacements. Until then, my bike is locked up for no more than 1 hour at a time and is usually within plain view of university police.

  13. 1st Amendment = Responsibility on Linking Dangerously · · Score: 1

I am not familiar with the site, nor the person in question. Advocating the overthrow of the US government is not tolerable by any means. Advocating a change in politics and policies would fall under freedom of speech. When lives are threatened, yes they are threatened by an overthrow, that freedom of speech is abused. Like the person who looked at the situation from a European POV, freedom of speech comes with responsibility. I know I am going to get flamed for this but: for all those who think this is a violation of the 1st amendment, do you agree that arresting a muslim-american on the basis that they created a website that advocates overthrowing the US government is a violation of their rights granted by the 1st amendment?
