It's called capitalism. It works. Get used to it. If offshoring makes sense, companies will do it. ------------- Well, yeah.. if America were capitalist at all, it would work that way. The Americanist way of doing things, is arguing about it, getting some special lobbying done.. putting all sorts of special taxes in place to "level playing fields" and accomodate for the differences in exchange rates, and everything else.
Taiwanese memory makers were penalized in this way a few years ago for their American counterparts inability to match them in terms of performace & price. It's pretty sad, but it's true, and it's getting worse.
Besides, if you work in a call center, maybe it's time you started looking for a better job anyway. <g>
It says that your calls are encrypted end-to-end. I wonder if there will be modules to use encryption that people could actually trust, and if that would violate some crappy TOS of theirs.
Man, slashdot moderation: it's like letting the bad taste of a democracy loose on the public. -1 Flamebait.. for something like that? This place has really gone to shit.
My exgirlfriend said she was giving me micropayments, but I realized she was just making some sad refernece to the size of my uhhh... bedroom, I think is what she meant.
Hell must have frozen over for Slashdot to run a story like this. I'm not going to bother reading all of the comments of people suggesting a flawed study, misleading statistics, or whatever else they can come up with.
Any Unix variant is historically, and notoriously, insecure. Get over it.
I stay playing my SNES (Super Metroid), Saturn (Radian Silver Gun, Megaman, Dracula X, Metal Slug, Stree fighters, etc.) and DreamCast (Bangai-o, ikaruga, mars matrix).
Heh, good ol' Slashdot. Post a view counter to popular opinion, and it becomes irrelevant. These are the same little dicklicking cocknoses that dismiss "mainstream music" as nothing but garbage too I'm sure. Fucking niggers.
Slow down there, you just insulted several million americans. Did you know that in some states in the US like Florida and Ohio, federal minimum wage doesn't apply? They are paid just over $2 per hour. If they weren't tipped, they would walk home with almost nothing.
While we're starting a charity for people who can't take care of themselves.. why not enroll the illegal immigrants getting paid next to nothing to do ACTUAL hard labor all day in the hot sun. Why don't we go tip them too? They go through more trouble to put food on your table than some sassy prick with a smock who has to take the trouble to walk 50' round trip, don't you agree?
Personally, I think neither deserve tips. Why don't these 2 million waiters have a union? Why doesn't that union demand better pay? Why on earth should I give a flying fuck about what THEY make, any more than they should about what I make?
I don't tip because I have extra money. I tip because I've worked just about every shit job there is at some point in time, and can completely relate to them having to deal with asshole customers every day who think that $2.25/hr actually pays the rent in most metro areas.
Certainly no one forced you to take that job.
I tip based on what I think the service that individual is providing me is worth. You say "hi, how are you doing", you listen, you take my order, bring my drink, and bring my food. The highest I will tip for that combination of light chore is $5. No more. If that's not acceptable, I would be happy to do it myself, and save the $5. Right now, I make slighty more than minimum wage. I work in a job that is almost unheard of to be tipped, but I do work with the public. I usually get tipped about $5 or so per day, which is enough to cover essentials such as cigarettes and some food. I get tips because I provide a service to the customer above and beyond what they are expecting
and they recognize that. I don't expect them to start shelling out the cash because I tell some lame rehashed waiter-jokes. That almost literally makes me sick thinking about it. Like they are some kind of artistic performers. Your job is completely unneeded. If there were any employee who could be replaced easily by robots, it would definitely be the waiter. It would be so easy, that I'm surprised it's not already done. And these are the people who don't just expect tips, but DEMAND them. Figures.
Maybe instead of putting the burden on the customer, waiters should organize and demand a LIVING WAGE from their employers. It's no good being a customer and feeling pressured and wondering "Gee, is this enough, poor little guy.. he might starve to death without my spare change." It's pathetic, and demeaning to both parties. Everyone but the employer who can just pay nothing in wages, and keep more for himself. Good racket.
I think you're wrong, and that the technical means to prevent authorized transfer of digital files will be avilable fairly soon. That won;t stop somone from digitizing analog content, but it will stop them from distributing the illegal copy.
You cannot stop people from distributing illegal copies, any more than you could stop them from distributing alcohol, drugs, women, internet gambling, etc. When there is a demand, there will always be a supply.
Uh-uh. He seems to be saying (and I certainly am saying) that the content industry will eventually find a way to make unauthorized copying technically impossible.
As long as songs can be heard by ANYONE, and movies seen by ANYONE.. they will always be pirated. Period. Look at the popularity of movie theater rips in the last few years. They even search people at big previews now. Does it stop? Nope. Does it slow down? Not a damn bit. What are they going to do, strip search people before entering a theater?
People will always be able to copy brand new songs of the radio and put them to OGG or MP3.
"They have a chronic lack of girlfriends, are usually socially inadequate and are drawn compulsively to write self-replicating codes. It's a form of digital graffiti to them,"
Sounds like some of the descriptions of 'hackers' from the movie Hackers. Life imitating trash.
Coder: Huh? They are coming for me? I'd better get moving before they get here.
Despite what the news makes of the FBI bungling of everything from OJs lab results, to Waco, to terrorist intelligence.. they are quite capable when it comes to tracking and arresting most 18 year old kids. You honestly don't think they are just going to waltz up to his house out of the blue and expect him to just not have run away do you? I'm sure he's been under heavy surveillance.
...and 7-Elevens would be inundated with job applications from band members who didn't make any money.
:)
You've obviously never been to many 7-11s have you?
Everything is for sale.. even your kids education. Pretty fucking sad.
If it is, then Symantec will be out of business. Why would they want that?
Finally, somebody has stepped up with an article that descibes the potental abuse of RFID.
If you want to see stuff actually pertaining to RFID.. all you have to do is google.
here
Or here
Get the president on the horn, this could be a Defcon 5 situation!!

I would hate to live in your world where anyone can be dragged up on any charges and left to the mercy of a jury.
Stop by some time, it's the one between venus and mars.
The police can charge you with pretty much whatever they want. Thanks to things like the patriot act, etc.. it's only getting worse.
The only thing anyone should need a license for is trying to impose their crazy ideas on an otherwise happy, free society.
I'm pretty sure the SNES/GBA couldn't handle a faithful port of Tomb Raider.
It's generally well known that the GBA is something like the original Playstation in processing power.
You've obviously never been to England - it's standard fare here for the 20-somethings desperate to make themselves sick every friday night.
Even Indian food is a step up from the norm in England, eh? That stuff makes me vomit.
But I didn't believe him - it was obvious he was just stretching the truth.
Baaaaaa-zing!
Heh, a little shameless Family Guy referencing for the 99.99% that wouldn't get it.

Ahh, a man with good tastes.
Sorry, I can't. My account is in overdraft since i paid 2000 bucks to RIAA
Dont forget the $3,500 to DirecTV!

The FBI will be arresting an 18 year-old
