    Yes, and of course every other operating system has been completely invulnerable during that same time period? Even OpenBSD.. a very secure OS, but not at all suitable for the average home luser has had remote exploits. So, drop the Microsoft bashing already and get a grip. They are making an effort to fix some of the things that you always hear everyone bitching about..

    I think taking it down a notch might be in order... like "You shouldn't install this." or "Installing this could be very bad, and you should definately click the big red button that says "DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM BECAUSE IT IS BAD."

    The problem of course with your post, and the parents.. is that you cannot determine if the thing they want to install is actually bad. If you already knew it was bad.. then why you would even give them a choice to install it in the first place?

    i was a busboy/waiter all through high school and college and i can tell you that it teaches you valuable life skills like:
    * how to manage your time and prioritize obligations
    * how to make and save money; how to spend money wisely
    * how to deal with work conditions, including low pay, long hours, bad bosses, evil customers, etc.
    * eventually, how to appreciate a "better" job, having tasted first hand what some people have to do to earn a living


    * How to make lists!!

    He spent an hour installing a printer driver?

    XP Security updates.. 1 hour? Maybe downloading and installing.. but not actual "time wasted".

    Ummm.... every hear of Green Cards? H-11B visas? The US is just as protective about foreigner's working here as other countries. You can argue about the number of foreigners working in the US vs. others, or what the specific requirements are, but everyone does it.

    I think the point previous posters were making is that some countries DO NOT allow foreigners to work in their countries, period. We do, and the fact that we may limit it in some (miniscule) ways is like comparing apples to oranges.

    Why should they give jobs to foreigners when there are already not enough jobs to go around.

    Using that logic, then why should we? As long as there is ANY unemployment in America, why should we be sending jobs to foreigners, working either here or abroad?

    70? You're only doing 70 on 80? Geez, you must have been nearly backended dozens of times ;-)

    Yeah, actually I was thinking of the freeway speeds where I am currently. But you're right. The speed limit there on I-80 is 65MPH, so generally people are going 80MPH. That's even more dangerous.

    I lived right by the one they had in Roseville, CA. It was extremely bright, annoying, and dangerous seeming. While you are driving down the freeway (especially at night) it was so bright that you couldn't not look at it. Which I'm sure is the point. But when you have thousands of people flying by at 70mph, it just doesn't seem safe.

    Well, in that case Mr. Technical-Pants.. You can't fairly compare Europe to the US. Since one is a CONTINENT, and one is a COUNTRY. I figured this was an oversight on the original posters part. If you are going to say Europe, then why not compare with North America? (Which has ~420 million people) And about 3 times larger in area.

    Not to sound too nationalistic, but Europe is much bigger than the US - it's just more disorganised, and hamstrung by the French. ;-)

    Check the facts.

    The US: 3,717,900 Square Miles
    The EU: 1,249,000 Square Miles

    :)

    The EU outnumbers the population of the US by about 90 million. We have about 1/4 the population density.

    BUT... the absolute, positive, no questions asked fact, is that last time my office of 300+ people had some worm running around, my mac was NOT infected and I was not required to jump through IT-hoops for hours to get rid of it or prevent it from happening.

    My TRS-80 dodged the last round of viruses as well. Cheers to security through obscurity!! It's funny how the majority of the slashdot crowd jeers at this model for "security" in most respects, but then praises it in others. Oh well, hip hip hooray for hypocrisy.

    Messenger is so wretched in terms of stability that someone has written a now pay-for program to bolt over the IM client so that it does not crumple at the slightest sign of trouble.

    I've used Yahoo for messaging for a couple of years now, and have never had it crash once. It's running 24/7. It has more features than any other standard IM software. Webcam, chat rooms, themes, voice, send files with online caching.. etc. I mean compared to ICQ or AIM, it seems like it's obviously the superior choice. I don't really get why people don't like it, or say it's unstable and things like that.

    There is, of course, a Java IM client written by Yahoo, but its functionality is limited. More importantly, it's annoying and slow.

    How about the companies who paid to BUILD the networks, charge people to USE the networks. Then, the people who want to use VOIP software, will PAY those people who MADE it. Or use free software that some decent person had the heart to give away.

    Oh christ, what? That's how things have been going along so smoothly all this time? Well..

    Everyone will be happy, and the government can go knock on someone elses door for that "little bit more" that they always seem to need. What will it take for Americans to realize that between the 20-30% they lose right off the top, and the 10-20% more they lose on sales, use, home, and other taxes, that enough is enough? It's sickening.

    Wow! You must listen to some REALLLLLLLLY stupid artists.

    The artists I work for that have major label deals all make between $1 and $2 and album.


    What would have been helpful in your argument would have been to mention how many albums these bands sell a year, or if anyone has ever heard of them.

    I mean, I could call those friends of yours fools. I could say that I make $8 per album sale myself. I burn all of the CDs myself, and print the album covers, and do the art, and everything. I record at home. Yeah.. I could mention that I sell only 5 albums a year.. and mostly to my mom, but what the heck.. I'd be making a good point!!

    Personally, I blame a system that tells kids that they can all be exceptional. It's very motivating and all, but the problem is that so many of them seem to actually believe it.

    What's wrong with that? It's better to have 100 kids who think they're exceptional.. have one who actually is, with the self-esteem to take advantage of it.. than to have 100 kids who think they're all worthless.
