  1. Server 2008 R2 on Windows 7 Reintroduces Remote BSoD · · Score: 1

I've just tested it on 3 of my Server 2008 R2 machines here (final build, technet ftw). It was unable to crash any of them. I wonder if 2008R2 has any new SMB code we don't know about yet?

Note: all 3 2008R2 machines have open (guest-authable) fileshares available via SMB.

That is untrue. The Download Manager pops to front. The only situation in which it does not, is if it is already open from a previous download.

As for the Open/Save Dance somehow being the ultimate solution to this, what do you think the average user (read: almost all users) does when they see an Open/Save box? They jam that OK key until it goes away and stops asking them a hard question. This effectively nullifies the criticism of the feature. It is worth noting that Firefox by default downloads files to the desktop, so with an average user at the controls, the "bug" is just as dangerous.

I have no issue with a browser automatically downloading files. There is a reason quarantined dropboxes exist. If you're not smart enough to notice the difference between My Computer.exe and an authentic shortcut then that is entirely your fault.

This issue is about the execution of code WITHOUT user interaction.

You can have an argument about the pros and cons of the Safari Feature somewhere else. This is not the problem here.

  9. Re:Closest resources first on Safari "Carpet Bomb" Attack Code Released · · Score: 3, Informative

This is exactly what is happening.

And yet this is listed as a Safari flaw?

Come on, how insanely insecure is it to run executable code from the desktop! Hasn't windows had protection on the windows and system32 directories for about 6 billion years now for this very reason? And then they go and make it pull executable code from just about the least secure place on any PC.

From where I'm sitting this is a massively Microsoft problem, but their suggested "fix" is still the easiest solution by far. But its a bandaid to a gaping oversight.

Safari on the mac defaults to /Users/user/Downloads. Wouldn't be hard to change WinSafari to do the same, but it would almost be an admission of fault to all the IE fanboys.

No longer a mindless pawn they swore allegiance to a new faction (insert horde or alliance here). You have pockets deep enough, you just sold a bojillion iphones, so buy this guy. If he's full of crap, make the fact that you wanted his "root cause" and he couldnt show you it publicly known, then he gets shamed into STFU and stops spreading FUD. If he does show the root cause, then great, put him on retainer and continue to have a fantastic OS. I know jobs likes to do things all secretive and on his own terms, but this is a public perception issue, it needs to be handled in the public eye. Get on the private jet and go see this guy in person, use the RDF to mess with him and get this shit cleared up. Look youre getting confused here. If joe blogs can write an app which connects to the network, then the network is not closed. What you are talking about is interoperability. Its completely different to being "closed". An example of a closed system is Windows Update. You can ONLY connect to it using the specified software on the specified platform. Try and use it in firefox, or on linux, and it shuts you out. Hence it is closed. If the IM networks were closed, we would be limited to only using the standard clients which would suck for non-windows users. And as for multi-protocol IM clients, Trillian IS terrible, there are far better clients out there. Miranda is you are windows bound, or adium on os x and gaim on linux.
