First off, that was not a typical experience, I've had a deskjet up and running in under a minute on Windows XP, plug it in, ding ding hardware found, printer found, hardware installed , worst case it asks me to choose which printer driver (deskjet 720 vs 722), increasing the time to 2 minutes tops. Same goes for a couple of other printers, the only printer it took me longer then 2 minutes to install was an HP Jetdirect Color Laser. And i'm not slamming linux, i use it love and advocate its use not to mention i've never really setup printing on Linux (workplace = Windows, rarely print from home). Bottom line your comparison is inaccurate.
Also about the comparison about your friend, thats the way it always is if you want to switch people over from anything, you make it similar or provide a ton of tips and help to make the switch easier, anyone remember the early versions of word and their 'help for wordperfect users' option?
If you want to get people to switch the learning curve must be minimized radically (a la XPde) , and again i'm not saying that getting people to switch is of paramount importance , but if thats your goal....

As well as the grandma types from what i've seen. A whole lot of users use the web simply to
    a) chat / im other ppl - gaim etc work well not amazing but still good enough
    b) Send and receieve email (usually via webmail) and browse sites - firefox takes care of this
    c) listen to music
    d) download, receive (via email) and view pictures
    e) type out a letter or minor document etc and print out stuff occassionaly
    f) a very small %age of this demographic use the computer to watch videos which to an extent should be ok as well, as well video conference
Except for f this demographic will be well served with linux especially with the cost savings, i've been advocating people i know that fit the demographic to use linux, usually via knoppix or if i'm doing an install suse :)

Agree partly but for the most part thats a gross over simplification. 1) Yes and no, any foreign invading army is invariably considered BAD regardless of its true intentions (which frankly we all were lied to about anyways). Its not simply about prosperity, its about the US favouring regimes that favour them regardless of it being good for the people. Thats what governments and people do (you scratch my back i'll scratch yours etc) but on the flip side its easier to blame ones problem on the foreign cause (no matter how minor a part they played) then admitting to ones own mistakes and that holds true for America as well as the Muslim world (9/11 providing ample evidence of that on the american end). 2) that may be true about bin laden but not his followers, most of his followers believe in the palestinian cause, ditto for chechnya, kashmir , what happened in bosnia etc. Check this out - Guardian story about a hijacker from 9/11. If it was only about saudi arabia 90%+ of his followers would vanish, people largely dont give that much of a shit about it in the sense that the country itself is a mess and its the rulers fault , long live monarchy ...
