No, microsoft only won once: DOS. After that, they just used that marketshare alongside some really shady business practices to push windows as the #1 OS. After they became filthily rich, their strategy has been fairly simple ... they push OEM manufacturers to bundle windoze with new computers, so that average joe considers windoze part of the computer, the default, and doesn't even consider anything else, they keep certain missfeatures, bugs, and some awful design issues in order to keep the huge fix-windows industry alive (overcrowded IT departments, anti virus/malware/spyware/whateverware, and the shitload of motherfuckers that make a living out of charging joe six pack 50 bucks to remove all the crapware he installed while trying to download porn), sliding money under the table for some high-level managers at fortune 500 companies, etc, etc.

That's it. Everything m$ has done after that (that wasn't directly related to windows on x86) has failed.

Microsoft has never had any kind of success in any new market. This will not be an exception.

People is afraid to migrate, afraid to change, therefore they are still relevant in the x86 OSs business. Anything else is brand new and fair game for everyone, and m$ just can't compete on that, competition hasn't ever been one of microsoft's strongest points.

Humanity's advances in certain areas (like robotics) are amazing. The sad part is that we are way ahead in certain areas, but way behind in other three key areas:

    a) Energy:

We still have to crack the energy issue. We lack both reliable ways to gather energy, and reliable ways to store it.

    b) AI

We are still in diapers in weak AI, and not even started in strong AI.

    c) Economy

We are still based on the stupid principle of scarcity. Until we realize that we can produce as much as we need of just about anything, and that we are limiting ourselves by creating artificial scarcity to keep alive a system that's been dead for a long time, we won't make that breakthrough into what we thought the year 2000 was going to be.

    There is a HUGE difference.

Ads with fake customers/doctors/specialists on it don't tell you at any time that those are REAL. They don't tell you that they are fake, either.

If anybody asks, then they'll tell you, sure, they are actors. Some people do realize that fact, most don't, but even if you do realize it's fake, it still sort of works at a subconscious level.

In the Galaxy 2 presentation, Samsung's engineers say "It's good to see this REAL LIFE experiences", etc, etc. (Emphasis is NOT mine, they actually put the emphasis on the word REAL) ... several times. Now, in most cases they just let you assume that they are real customers, in this case, they are lying to you.

For example, Chinese manufacturers put "3G support" on most of their tablets. If you ask, they'll tell you that it "Supports external 3G". That is, you can connect a modem to it through USB and it'll work. Same thing for GPS support. Now, sure, it's not honest, but it's not as bad as if they were telling you "Internal 3G, just insert your sim card", and it didn't have internal 3G at all.

I don't agree with your statement that there is no revenue in providing updates.

If somebody offered a very high quality phone, with great hardware (better than the iphone), with upgradeable memory and processor, user-replaceable battery, and some sort of slot to add 3G, and in the future replace that card with 4G/5G etc. and offered 10 years of software upgrades, then that company would have a great selling point, and it would be able to outsell even Apple. Create a phone that you can upgrade, allow us to upgrade or replace screen, battery, processor, memory, eventually the whole motherboard. Bring the clone concept to mobiles, and guarantee future software upgrades.

Also, guaranteeing future software upgrades is INCREDIBLY simple and should cost ZERO DOLLARS to the company. Just release EVERY SINGLE DRIVER under the GPL and push google to commit them to the android kernel. That's it. Do you see computer manufacturers going crazy over supporting future software? No, they just release drivers and software devs take care of the rest.

The problem is that this companies refuse to release source for their drivers, therefore it's impossible to port newer software into their devices.

I have several tablets, and I have managed to run newer Android versions on them. I have a tablet that originally came with 1.5 running Froyo, but it's unusable because we don't have source code for their video acceleration hardware.

Nobody is willing to do the right thing, and because of that they are loosing profits, customers hate them, and apple keeps winning by doing things still marginally right.

Most of the time, indoors and at night, there is NO SIGNIFICANT source of IR light. Therefore, most IR cameras are not only IR-sensitive, but they also have IR emitters (LEDs). Flares are common in photography, but nobody calls them ghosts. Flares do not happen only with visible light, there is a myriad of reflections, flares and other phenomena that happen with IR light. Particularly, your power source is not 100% stable (hook up a voltmeter and an oscilloscope to your average 12V 1A cheap made-in-china PSU regularly used for cameras, and you'll see what I mean. That PSU is patched through to the LEDs, with only an SSR in the middle, controlled by the LDR in the front of the camera. LDRs are less than reliable, and I one of the biggest issues with IR cams is that they switch all the time from visible light to IR. That creates LOTS of weird flashes and other effects. CCDs aren't perfect either, and neither is the DSP behind it.

There is no god, there are no ghosts, no vampires, no supernatural bullshit. By it's very definition, the supernatural doesn't exist. The only weird thing out there that is real is Zombies, and you can see masses of them marching into churches or ghost-detection stores.
