    That quoted phrase 'emerged at linux launch' is NOWHERE in the article. The article says "London Stock Exchange price data failures ‘emerged immediately at Millennium launch’". This is obviously an application issue, why is the summary sort of blaming the operating system?

    I still can't explain how is it that 60% of the population goes crazy over tinelly and similar assholes. I just can't wrap my head around that concept. But then again, I can't understand how people believe in god, or dislike the Pythons, so I'm not precisely very related to the general population.

    Exactly my argument. If you use some ancient code and it doesn't use PDO or $PREPARED_STATEMENT_SYSTEM, you don't have to rewrite it. Just use basic input validation and escape all strings, and you should be relatively safe.

    Yeah, I mentioned proper escaping and input validation because a rewrite of that app to use PDO would take time and be expensive. Adding input validation and escaping all strings is trivial and can be done in an afternoon.

    They are giving you the original URL where the injection was used, not a link to the actual injection.

    They probably replaced some of those parameters with the injection code.

    page is probably how many results per page they want, and pageNav is what page they want, so probably page landed straight into a LIMIT in a sql query, without any kind of treatment. Most likely, just passing that crap through mysql_real_escape_string() would have been enough.

    In Asimov's universe, the laws specifically mention the other directives, and precedence:

    1 - A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2 - A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3 - A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

    The important part being: "except where such orders would conflict with ... X law".

    You know, there's one thing that seemed odd to me, you say you probably got it from some food ... I thought such a disease would be either genetic or developmental, but you say you got it through some food. Does it have some kind of viral/bacteriological origin?

    I truly hope you get better, and remember, we can be fucking idiots sometimes, but /.ers do take care of each other. If you are having a hard time and need any kind of help (financial or otherwise), never forget that the /. effect can do a lot more than murder poor webservers.

It’s an attractive option for policymakers who want an option for future Egypts, between doing nothing and sending in the Marines. And it might give teeth to the Obama administration’s demand that foreign governments consider internet access an inviolable human right.

    How about staying the fuck out of other countries and their policies? If the US wants to play good neighbor, it could start by complying with UN resolutions, and trying to pass this crap through the UN like it should.

    Understanding time's true nature and the real effect that nature has on how we experience reality isn't simple. The fundamental question lies in whether we choose to refer to the actual event, or we choose to refer to the information about that event reaching us. Considering that everyday we refer to events happening in the present, when in reality light still takes time to travel any distance, regardless of how small, and therefore everything we experience is the effects of some past event, we should apply a consistent logic when dealing with this situations. Since the event is so far away that treating it as happening now or occurring 64 million years ago doesn't really change anything for us, and given that we find it convenient to refer to past events that happen close enough as "now", we should say that the event has just occurred, instead of pretending that saying it happened 64 million years ago changes anything for us.

    Bullshit. The internet has been free for so many years, and it will continue to be free. The software behind 80% of the internet is free software. If we can create the software that you use to run your website for free, you can run your website for free.
