What do you mean "since" there have been alternatives?
Internet Explorer came in late to the party. There were browsers after IE, and there are browsers after IE.
Same with windows. There were OSs before, and there are OSs after.
Anyone calling a certain software "alternative" to a given microsoft solution is just showing that he has less than 15 years of experience in computing, and that he hasn't learn a thing in those 15 years anyway...
Bullshit. When you find a security issue in a piece of Free Software, you feel compelled to fix it. You can fix it and submit the patch (and get the credit for it) without leaving your desktop. Everything is there. do a svn checkout, fix, commit. That's all. People will thank you, and you'll feel great.
When you find a security issue on a microsoft product, you have to:
Find a way to report the bug. You know, it's not simple... contacting someone in there is impossible. you can send an email and blindly wait for it to be fixed. But behold, if they do take your bug report, they are probably not going to fix it. Wait six months sitting on the bug report. When it becomes public, they'll first sue you for attacking their OS, and most likely win. If you publish the bug on your blog, you'll get threats and DMCA takedown notices. Then, 3 months layer, they'll quietly patch it, with a 200mb security update, that will break 10 other applications, cause every machine to blue screen, and probably introduce 10 new vulnerabilities. 2 Week later, they'll start telling people to NOT install that latest service pack. A year later, the patch will go away due to some other update that fixes it, or some other external agent (like an antivirus software) "fixing" the issue. 5 years later, a brand new version of windows will come out, and the bug will resurface.
And, whatever happens, you won't get any recognition, and windows will still be totally insecure. Microsoft will still make billions out of it.
So, why help? For all I know, the best strategy to a more secure Internet is to let microsoft die....
Totally. That crap happens all the time. That's why any serious facility will have security outsourced to a company that is held legally responsible for the physical access to said facility.
Short story:
Once, I had my servers at iPlan (large ISP in Argentina, they have 2 HUGE datacenters in Buenos Aires). One weekend, a server went down and I was out of town. So I sent a friend to take care of it. I called the NOC to authorize him. They said they could only take my authorization in written form. So, I emailed my account manager asking for the right procedure, and he said mailing him the Name and DNI (sort of like SSN) of the person was enough. He then had to show some credential (Actually, his DNI) to prove his identity. I sent a simple email with this data, and they authorized him.
The next week, when I got back, I went to see my account manager. I got to his office, opened up my laptop, telneted into their SMPT server, and and delivered an email to his account, said email coming from info@fbi.gov.
That's simply the best way to explain to an illiterate bastard that email is totally insecure.
They many times rejected me access to the datacenter if I happened to forget my ID. Even when all the guards knew me very well (I went there very often.). The people in charge of that kind of stuff DON'T understand technology, they have the right intentions, and implement many security measures, and all said measures fall down when they put some really weak and stupid link somewhere in the chain. Like plain email authentication.
That's because English is my third language. It's a way more structured and tough language than my native Spanish. Since I've learn english by myself, and never took any formal education in the engishn Language, my use of it is mostly technical. So, yes, sometimes I sound like a freaking compiler speaking. Deal with it.
I've worked in the IT departments of non-tech related companies (or at least companies where the servers I maintained where not the actual service being provided by the company). I've worked on the Hosting industry (Where the servers I maintained where the core of the business), in software factories, and other industries. For the last 8 years, I've worked on telephony. I'm currently on charge of the whole operation of a small telco (When I got here, they were cisco+oracle+asp based, and I migrated the whole thing to Asterisk+MySQL+Perl.
I would never, EVER, fall for such a thing. Actually, I keep fighting with my providers over this crap. Even the big guys send updates in plain motherfucking email. Carriers set up and bring down POPs for inbound calls and signalling/media gateways all the time. They insist on notifying us of such additions on plain email.
I'm not going to whitelist on my firewall and add to my sip.conf as a peer/user/friend an IP I got in some random email!.
You want to notify me: Sign your fucking messages! They are fucking Verizon, and the bastards refuse to just sign their freaking email messages. So, what I do is, I have a template explaining the dangers of notifying of such changes in plain email. I reply to every mail I get with that template, and then call my account manager or whoever I have to in order to confirm the information.
Level 3 (Now owned by Verizon too), Verizon, British Telecom, Global Crosing, and other HUGE players on this industry, all do the same stupid shit. And all this guys are fucking Tier 1! Believe it or not, some other small Telcos seem to be more conscious about this stuff. VoipJet, for example (a small A-Z IAX-only route), sends all the notifications signed and they provide a link to the notice on their website where you can double check the information.
So, the blame here goes to BOTH the stupid Admins that just do whatever they get told over email, and to the companies that get them used to accept unauthenticated communications.
BULLSHIT. Religion should be treated without exceptions.
If you believe that ALIEN are out there, and wear a TINFOIL hat everywhere, BAM! in the nuthouse you go! if you believe that GOD is out there, and wear a KIPPAH hat everywhere, BAM! to the funny house with you too!
Why should we make this differeces? Religions are no different from delirium tremend, and should be treated with anti-psychotics too!
And anyone defending this criminally insane people should be executed on sight.
Damn you people. It's 2010 already. how much longer are you going to pretend that religion is OK?
Bullshit. Constant delusions and hallucinations are harmful. This guys are constantly delusional. They should be put away. I hear you calling this stuff "religion". I don't know the definition of that word... "religion". Regardless of how you want to name it, this is nothing but a psychotic disorder, and it should be dealt with accordingly. Allowing this delusional minds to run a school, is negligent at best, and probably even criminal.
I define christianism in the way Nietzsche did it: the perversion of everything that is beautiful and sacred about the human spirit. The worship of the weak and diseased. The poisoning of life itself.
So, yes, mormons are christians too. They fit the definition pretty well.
Precisely. Real time apps like 3D routers still require something like RS232. Until we get a replacement with such RT capabilities, RS232 will be around. The deal i, there's no need for a replacement, 'cause for such real time apps, RS232 i more than enough, and well known/documented. And cheap.
The main issue is delay. USB is a complex standard, it requires more processing power on both sides to run, and it's not truly great for realtime applications.
Certain simple electronic devices are just meant to be serial. Most PICs have built-in RS232/RS485 support while only few have USB support (and the very few are way more expensive.
I was wondering the same thing the other day. Actually, the only thing that is dying is parallel output.
Think about it:
LPT got replaced by USB PCI (Which is parallel) got replaced by PCI express (serial) IDE/PATA got replaced by SATA Parallel SCSI got replaced by Serial SCSI
But regarding serial devices, wether it's USB or the simpler and slower RS232, they are here to stay. They are cheaper, simpler to implement, and more effective. Computers will have UART chips as long as 3D routers, PIC recorders, home-made electronics, and other similar devices have RS232 ports.
I believe we'll see RS232 for at least another decade.
Catholicism provides all of that already. The priests make you gay really early, the sell you overpriced lies as soon as you are born, and your pope wears prada shoes. And the hats! That's fashionable!.
You are right. Alcohol is not the same as Spirituality. The differences:
- Alcohol is cheaper than religion
- Alcohol will get you laid
- Alcohol lets you sleep late on sundays
- Alcohol doesn't judge you, your condom, or your abortion.
- You don't have to wear ridiculous hats to drink Alcohol.
- Alcohol produces less brain damage than religion.
Damn, I forgot the link.
Here we go:

It's NSFSC (Not Safe For Stupid Christians) and NSFOW (Not Safe for Orwellian Workplaces)
I hope this answers your question as to how many laptops I've been through the last years. Yes, you can laugh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BECu44Z_zM8
That was a few months ago. The one I bought after this happened is the third laptop in 2 years. Yes, I'm clumsy.
Oh, sorry, you said "help file SCRIPTING". Then you must be talking about Info, not man, since info supports scripting (in LISP).
And off course it's also well documented, and totally secure.
You mean this one?

I haven't bought a keyboard for the last 5 years. That was something that I _used_ to do. I moved to just my laptop. Desktops are overrated.

Paging PizzaAnalogyGuy to this thread. PizzaAnalogyGuy, report to thread 10/03/02/1924237/
Actually, most windows lusers don't even know what a file system is.
I do that at the store, everytime I buy a new keyboard, before paying for it.
Wait, this keyboard is defective .. (Take out my keys, pop both win keys out) ... There you go, now it's ok. How much for this one? I'll take it.
So much fun ...
Or you could install a real POSIX compliant operating system, instead of a well proven security nightmare like any windows version.

I have that same knee-jerk reaction, but only when it's pronounced nu-cu-lear
It is difficult to tell for you, because you are the only /.er that doesn't know Kevin Smith.
You did get a hangover, it lasts the rest of your life, and manifests itself as delusions and interest in tall hats.
There is no god. Deal with it.
