Maybe its because selling shiny box software DOES make up the bulk of the current software industry? Just because you OSS people claim its not true, doesn't make it so.

The software industry is built around a closed source model where software is sold. This produces billions of dollars in revenue each year for thousands of companies.

I challenge you that external closed software sales make up the bulk of software development.

One way to do this is to post a higher rate of articles (haven't you noticed more articles this year than last?). The second way to do this is to post articles which are sure to bring the anti-M$/anti-Dubya crazies to the website posting insightful and frothy comments.

The last time it supposedly occurred in September during a joint MS/Novell conference. But dont let reality creep in!

"I can't see anyone being inspired to read after playing GT-Vice City, or Doom 3." Yes, that is why it is important to use the opportunities we have to force children to read to compel them to continue reading on their own. I know when I went to school I didn't like Shakespeare. I still don't like Shakespeare. I haven't read Shakespeare since I graduated from college. I also don't find many of the "classics" enjoyable. If those were the only books that I were ever exposed to I would not want to be a reader either. That is why even though I think the Harry Potter books are amazingly bad, I encourage children to read them as much as possible. Hopefully their interest in reading will continue. Reading bad books is better than reading no books.

I don't understand the fascination with this book. I found it very dry and poorly written. Most of the text seemed to revolve around "zero G" training tactics. I could not truly fathom why this would be an interesting primary subject. Does the interest come from the fact that the main character was a juvenile, and that is the target readership? I read the book when I was in my twenties, on the sole basis of the rave reviews I have heard and the fact that it won so many SF awards. Maybe that is why I disliked the book so much, although I can see how other books targeted at this audience could be compelling (Harry Potter, et all). I am interested in hearing comments from anyone who has read the book.

  22. Re:Anyone with a kid already know this on Students Do Better Without Computers · · Score: 0

I think the comment about schools taking the joy out of reading refers to the fact that schools tend to choose irrelevant and/or boring required reading material. As a literate adult who enjoys good literature, I do realize that requiring students to read such uninteresting material as Shakespeare, the Mill on the Floss, etc is counterproductive. In reality, books like "The Mill on the Floss" are boring. So boring that you never see a non-student reading them (do you?). Shakespeare is also boring (*gasp* I know!). The school system is convincing kids that reading is boring by forcing them to read this material. There are many wonderful books out there. Lets choose something a bit more interesting. I am not suggesting tripe like most people read (insert latest lawyer-book-writer name here), but something a bit more relevant. Shakespeare is not sacred.
