Racism is a normal human trait. You can see this experimentally by seperating a group of people into two groups and then asking each group what they thought about the other group. You will find that the comments display a definite bias against the "opposing" group and that their group is somehow "better".
The very idea that you are going to eradicate racism is comical. Racism is there because with race the groups are (usually) easy to define.
To me the entire article is flamebait. Starting with the title "How Microsoft Lost the API War", even though he doesn't explain why he thinks they may have. If anything, a lot of Microsofts strength comes from a stable unified API that can be used on the desktop, servers and mobile devices..NET is just an updated extension of that.
True, but didn't we know that there was history of water on Mars? Just look at any detailed picture of the surface. The markings of liquid are unmistakable. The ice caps are water.
Just to clarify, if there are any JPL or other people who were involved in the mission reading my parent post: it was a very well executed incredible mission and I am sure that it will produce a lot of data for scientists to pore over for decades. I am just impatient to know the question we all want to know: did life exist there?
I am going out on a limb here and say that this entire mission has really been a big disappointment to me. Although it did enhance our knowledge of the planet considerably, it did not even attempt to verify if there was/is life on the planet, which is the end goal. We all knew it had water on the surface - just look at the formations in a telescope survey or data from earlier space missions. What we really know is if this water caused life to exist on the planet at some time.
Another thing I always wanted them to add is a microphone which would send back audio of the surroundings. They did add this to an earlier mission (one of the EU or British ones I believe) as an afterthought, but the mission failed. It would be fascinating, and would be great PR values as well.
Your laptop panel tilts back, and thus is not exposed directly to sunlight. It would charge if the panel was closed though. There are standalone panels that do this.
He copies a proprietary protocol and he expects Microsoft to make sure their implementation is interoperable with his? This is ridiculous and a good warning to those who try to copy proprietary protocols.
SUPPORT OPEN PROTOCOLS. They are much more important than so called "Open Source".
"ani difranco has sold her albums _by herself_ for years and has made a huge name for herself. hundreds of independent artists work outside the industry under indie labels."
If this is such a good way to go then why doesn't every "musician" do it? The fact is that MOST of these guys need the RIAA marketing/distribution machine in order to survive at all. Those thousands and thousands of musicians wouldn't make a dime if the RIAA was in the picture or not. Being a so-called musician is risky business if you have suspect or mainstream talent. It is only marketing where these people can even be in the industry.
The RIAA does a LOT of work with iTunes. They negotiated the deal and provide the music in a timely fashion and do cross promotion, etc. Its not as if Apple gets a bunch of MP3's from Kazaa and resells them. There is a ton of work going on behind the scenes, and some of that is done by the RIAA.
"Thank God the RIAA is there then. Otherwise I really wouldn't know what to do!"
I know you are being sarcastic, but I'll bet if I went through your CD collection I would find mostly RIAA marketed music. I know everyone thinks that their "choice" of music is somehow unique and cool, but it is really colored by the marketing activities of the industry. Just because the moderators don't agree with me doesn't make me wrong. The RIAA provides a valuable service (promotion and marketing). Without this service most musicians wouldn't make a dime. As it is, only a small share of them do.
They are doing plenty of work. Most of the work is in marketing and promotion. Without that you would have no idea what "music" you wanted to download.
Despite what Slashdotters think, the RIAA "deserves" a much greater share of the profits than the artists do, since they are the ones that make the entire system possible. Without such an association the artists wouldn't be making as much as they do.
Where can I download the Source Code for this product? I am only interested in "Free" (as in freedom). However I would also like to get it for Free (as in Beer).
Huh? Why are you so obsessed about breaking a PDA? I develop for PDA's and therefore I have many of them and carry them around in my pocket or bag. I have never broken one, ever.
As a certified Klingon instructor I would like to mention that should be "Quapla'" not "Quaplah". The word in derived from Qua (meaning "entity") and "pla'a" (meaning "winning/success")
Of course I am speaking about the Klad'u sects language, not the Phal'a. That would be just...stupid!

Mod parent up: +5 Funny. Modern university research is driven by money. A lot of that money comes from private industry or government grants. These are the people asking you to sign an NDA. It doesn't mean the research can't be shared, just that an agreement needs to be in place with the people doing the funding before it is shared with you.

I personally think the Win32 API has been very stable.

I don't need no instructions on how to rock!!!
Oh, so I should be modded down because I support the view that IP is valuable since I am in the IP business (writing software)? Nice.

He was dumb enough to subscribe to Slashdot, that should tell you a lot!
....those linux people give it away for free! They're undercutting Microsoft in order to chain people to linux!
Thats how stupid you sound.
What is the DMCRA now? Same as the DMCA? If so, I am all for it. It protects my IP investment.
They didn't sell more chips. AMD based computers sold more units than Intel ones in retail shops. Intel still sells ~80% of all x86 chips overall.
Yes, so why support a proprietary (lockin) protocol by making a copy and spreading it even further? Support open standards, not open source.

I don't know where you are getting your ideas, but the majority of free software is produced and consumed in the United States.

The new PocketPC PDA's have VGA screens which means very good resolutions for screens of that size.
