Step 1 - Get the Cable Box!
If you have cable, your first step involves calling your provider and requesting a new "Firewire capable" or "IEEE 1394 enabled" HDTV cable box. Even if you don't own an HDTV, all these boxes have S-video out and work perfectly with regular TVs. Most cable companies charge a nominal monthly fee for the box, and provide local stations in high defenition for free (this is the only cost involved). For example, I am on Time Warner Cable, and I pay about $8.00 extra per month, which includes PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS and Discovery HD Theater. Plus, if you subscribe to any premium station, like HBO or Showtime, that price includes the high definition version!
Once your provider delivers the box, you just need a Firewire cable long enough to reach your Mac. Any Firewire cable (with the right connectors) will do. I actually used one of Apple's dainty-thin white iPod Firewire cables, and it worked like a charm when run to my Aluminum 15" PowerBook.
Someone wrote to the Asterisk list asking about these cheaper cards and someone eloquently replied here:
But that's just not "the right
thing to do". Asterisk development is paid for in part by sales of this
hardware. Buy it from Digium, and you get support as well.
I had a problem compiling the zap drivers when I got mine. When I
called, the phone was picked up immediately, by a real person who knew
exactly what they were talking about. Digium support actually SSHed
into my box and fixed it/showed me what I was doing wrong.
The support is well worth the price, especially if you are building a
production server. Or if your time is worth anything at all for that
matter.
In answer to the long held question, can a TiBook with one Wifi card act as a repeater and relay access to everyone else in the room without them having to pay, the answer it turns out is yes. How do we do this? Well, first turn off the built-in Apache installation on the OSX machine that is online. Edit httpd.conf to load mod_proxy (there are about 20 or so lines to uncomment). Turn Apache back on. Go to network prefs, and find out your assigned IP address. Write it on a piece of paper, and pass it around the room, telling them to set it as their web proxy.
Remember how his largely untrue article about Kevin Mitnick led to a lucrative book-writing deal for himself. Watch the 2600 documentary "Freedom Downtime" to see their take on Markoff too. They interviewed him and tried to give him a chance, but it turns out he sucks.
If this update doesn't fix it, try using Nudge to update your finder windows.
Product Description:
This Contextual Menu "nudges" the Finder to update the information it displays about a file or folder. Use it on any item (or groups of items) if you suspect the Finder hasn't updated its view. This should work for most attribute changes, icon changes, size changes, files that have been saved but don't appear, and so forth. Unfortunately, some attribute changes are NOT properly recognized. This includes the "invisible" and "package" attributes. For changes to those attributes, you must quit and restart the Finder. On Panther, you can also control-click in the empty space on any folder (or on the desktop) to nudge the folder itself, without needing to select anything.

Carbon Copy Cloner works very well. I just did a backup of my powerbook to an external firewire drive using CCC before sending the powerbook in for repair. Now I'm booting from the firewire drive on my old iMac until I get my powerbook back. Seemless.

...or else you could end up having to explain to your customers that the FBI has your server and you don't know when you're getting it back like this guy did.
Check out this applescript that I hacked together recently. This is what applescript is good at. Bringing two applications together to make your life easier.

I recently started learning applescript to help automate page layout with InDesign. After looking around and trying some demos, it looks like the best software for writing applescript is Script Debugger. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/morei nfo/macosx/ 8048 The bad news is it's $189!
I just ordered a book called AppleScripting InDesign which has good reviews. It's quite pricy though, $40 at amazon.com and I couldn't find it anywhere else. It's a pretty niche book so I guess that's not such a surprise. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ 0970726511/
Apple Remote Desktop uses UDP which can't be tunneled thru SSH. I understand Timbuktu can be tunneled thru SSH (it uses TCP), and I know for certain VNC can be tunneled thru SSH (that's what I have set up on my home OSX server now).
Settlers is awesome. Play online with the java applet version or with the open source (windows only) version.

This is just one more reason not to buy RAM or harddrives from apple. They're overpriced. Check dealram.com, dealmac.com, & pricewatch.com instead.
