How do you say it's useless? It kills any non-boss instanly and gives you its health. When it's charged up, just whip it out (the soul cube) when confronted with a big demon or when low on health. Very handy. I found myself using it all the time after obtaining it.
This is a dumb mod. Why not make a mod to make everything fullbright and make the monsters into fluffy bunnies? This game is entirely too scary, after all. Not everyone likes scary games, so it should cater to everyone, right?
The *point* of the one "weapon" carrying limit was to make it scarier and add challenge. There are several parts where you have to wait for an imp to summon a fireball so that you can see to shoot it. That or rely on the fantastic surround sound in the game.
It's not necessarily realistic, no. Neither is being able to take as much damage as DoomGuy can and fix it instantly with a medkit. I'm all for realism in general, but if in some games if realism takes second place to atmosphere, I don't mind so much as long as realism isn't thrown completely out the window.
If you don't like it, go play FarCry (and no offense to FC; it's a great game).
This is one mod I won't be installing.
How this even finds its way onto Slashdot is beyond me.

A) It's not really a rifle. The headline is misleading. RTFA.
B) It is not illegal (here in Texas and in most of the states) to carry around a rifle with a scope. This is not even really a rifle.
Now if you're seen pointing it at people, you might get some police at the very least asking WTF is going on, at the worst, you might get shot. Explaining that you're a "hax0r" probably won't help. But it's probably not a good idea after the sniper attacks a while ago to be visibly pointing a rifle-like object at people on cell-phones. (or not)
In some states it may be illegal to own a handgun, but not here in Texas (nor in most states, I think). I can walk into a pawn shop, buy a handgun and keep it in my nightstand with no legal problems whatsoever (and no, there are no children in the house). The only thing that's illegal to do with handguns as far as I can tell is carry them openly. You can only carry them concealed (with a permit) as far as I know.
As far as not getting in trouble, you probably will at least get some nervous people if you're visibly aiming it.
Somehow I doubt that most kids now can type *properly* very quickly. I'm sure they can type quickly with two fingers and using "2" for too or to, "u" for you, etc.
Most of my typing experience at that age was from MUDding, playing old adventure games and programming. I could type very well when I took my required typing class also (except it was taught on typewriters, not computers). Most kids now have computer experience, but it's with "iming thir h0mies n talkn 2 chix". Games now rarely require typing even when on a PC, and most kids probably play games on consoles anyway. Being able to type like that even at 200 WPM won't help you in a job, most likely.
I don't think "mechas" meaning the anime kung-fu super power robots will ever happen, but "mechs" meaning the walking tanks of Battletech and Mechwarrior may one day happen. They're much more realistic (and IMHO cooler) than giant robots that run and jump with the grace of a ballerina.
I know that, but I'm pretty sure I heard someone specifically saying that the super shotgun would be back too. Something about how it'd be back and it will be cool for Doom fans to get their hands back on it.
There's supposed to be less combat and more atomsphere. The trailer, to be exciting, shows the combat. I'm sure they didn't want to give away all the scary parts, plus, it'd be less exciting to just show creepy stuff.
In some other trailers they show more of the weird creepiness.
Obviously different people like different things. After seeing this most recent trailer I felt creeped out and extremely psyched. That was a pretty scary trailer, IMO. I really can't imagine anyone (especially a Doom fan) being any less than absolutely freaking excited to get this game ASAP.
You can right now.
There have been ports of Doom1/2 that have let you play just as easily as you play Quake for some time now. Zdaemon is but one of many.
Remember that real horror isn't necessarily about violence. Doom 3 will obviously have lots of it, but horror is a psyhological creepy thing, which Doom3 also seems to have.
I never was allowed to see horror movies as a kid and now I'm a weird zombiephile horror fanatic, so I don't know if seeing them as a kid has anything to do with how you turn out.
If you don't like horror, then this might not be the game for you. It looks very creepy and scary. A lot of the imagery reminds me of that in the Silent Hill series. And that's disturbing.
I still remember that the original Doom scared me. Particularly the Cyberdemon. Just the sound of it stomping around made me so afraid that it took about 10 minutes before I peeked out of the starting room on that level. I was literally afraid for my life.
I'm gonna be scared out of my pants and I'm sure I'm gonna love it.
I realized that it was an attempt at humor, but humor (to me) is only funny when it has something to do with reality. Unless it's completely off-the-wall humor like Monty Python or the like, which "a camera" doesn't quite fit into, IMO.
Actually, I have a wonderful sense of humor, but when a joke is made about something which is obviously wrong, it doesn't seem funny to me.
Yes, the only way to play this game (along with any game that's supposed to be scary) is in the dark, alone, with the sound cranked up. My last Doom3 upgrade, some 5.1 surround speakers is on the way now. I got them just because of the recommendation of a beta tester (I think) that said it's really worth it for the atmosphere.
But I have the feeling this game will be very scary. Parts of the trailer remind me of Silent Hill and Eternal Darkness (which is very odd for an id game), and those games are damn creepy.
I already have three days off work so I won't have to be interrupted by the real world. It'll be Pop-tarts, Bawls, and Doom3 for me for days and days, baby!
Haven't you seen the trailer with the BFG (and plasma rifle)? You're so, like, July! They also said in that trailer (forget which one now) that all the weapons from the original will be back.
BTW, it most likely won't be in stores on the 3rd, that's when it ships to stores. I know that EB isn't getting it until the 4th. You might want to call your friendly local game retailer to check. Don't want to have to make two trips to the store.:)
Go to www.dolby.com, and check out the Dolby Headphone demos. It's a way to make headphones sound like 5.1 in a room. It actually does a pretty good job IMHO. The only problem is, I can't find a dedicated DH decoder to use with my 5.1 soundcard and $300 Sennheiser headphones, so I had to spend $200 more so I'd have surround sound for Doom3.
I can hum (I can't whistle well) the themes and much of the other music from Doom1, Doom2, Doom3, and Quake.
The Doom3 theme is not ambient at all. And I've had it stuck in my head for several days straight.
However, no, I can't bring to mind the music from Q2 or Q3. To me it was too monotonous.
If you read the info about the flashlight on your PDA, it explains why.
Uhm...you shouldn't have had it until you get it.

VIA is not all there is. NForce2 chipsets work very well.

Uhm, Carmack said it was in Doom3. All the weapons from Doom, in fact.

Holy cow, the 2nd?? I too have it preordered, but I won't be able to get it until the 4th. Gamestop doesn't have PC games, do they?
:)
I'm going to be up there waiting for them to open the door the morning of the 4th, though, I'll tell you that.

Uhm, if you RTFA, you'll see that they're not looking at the camera, the camera is off to the side, looking at their eye.
I agree 100%. The creature (Lysandus? Underking? Lich?) on front was mildly creepy and the shininess was cool.
Morrowind has a cool box too, IMO. I've never seen the Arena box. While I didn't like the game, Battlespire had very cool box art too.
It's faint. Faint means light, as you used it, and to pass out. Feint means a maneuver designed to trick an opponent in combat.
These are my definitions and you can probably find better ones just about anywhere.
The Megaman 2 artwork was pretty bad too.
Thanks for the info. I was looking at trying this out, but I'll pass now.
I'm looking forward to Full Spectrum Warrior coming out for PC; it looks cool to me.
