He doesn't stop at software. In several of his speeches he talks about a printer that was "Donated" to his department that had proprietary drivers. That was the reason he started GNU.
He has talked about hardware having "Open" drivers.
Hardware is a wierd area. You have a tangible cost in production of the Hardware for each unit, not just the first.
That's the reason they are doing this. They want the "CD" sale. They probably don't have the "Album" figures setup to record from ITunes or MTunes or whatever the latest and "greatest" Tunes place.
Personally, I buy from http://www.centurymedia.com and various other labels. $12 a cd for 10-15 songs is not that bad.
Of course, they are mainly heavy metal. So probably not for everyone.
A band called Nightwish has an interesting sound, as well as "The Gathering".
It is kinda pre-disposed to be Gentoo Flameworthy, eh.:-)
Gentoo does allow you to install Binary Packages for alot of larger packages. There is also a binary download option in the `emerge` command that will download and install the Binary Package built by a maintainer.
They also have never contacted a Mailing List via email either.
users@openoffice.org works wonders. There are also serveral other mailing lists to find info on. Most of my questions are answered within the hour. (Of course, that is the case with every FOSS mailing list I have contacted with a question.;-))
This is exactly what OOo needed. Free advertising.
Every single one of these items is quickly checked from a few seconds of getting into OOo. They planted the seed in Managers minds with this doc.
Is OOo right for EVERYBODY? no. Is it right for most? _DEFINATELY yes_. All it takes is using OOo for a little bit to realize it just works.
I have used OOo exclusively at work with the IT guys blessing. Do I need to "Fall Back" to MS Office. No. OOo works for every single document my company has ever got or created. Nobody has ever realized that I don't use MS Office.
They really should do at least *some* checks before posting this stuff. OOo definately has Macro capabilities, and has since it was released as Open Source 3 years ago.
I have been with it since the start, and have helped document some of the features.
Other than the fact that MS Visual Studio doesn't implement it as there GUI creation. Most of the developers of VS don't even care how things are working in what they have, let alone have to write the GUI stuff by hand. I can see there faces if I even hinted at it.
Then they would say, Why?
Mono without an exact implementation of Microsoft, System namespaces is the same as having a whole new implementation of.Net. Can you take bytecode created in VS and run it in Mono, without a recompile?
But, the process is there. The community could do the work on Kaffe or GCJ, and then IBM/Novel/Intel/OSDN could all pitch in a little to get it licensed, then you could call it Java.
Do we know exactly what patents/IP MS has up their sleeve to kill Mono should they need to?
That is my problem with Mono. If you go to the Mono site, and click on some of the implementations they point to http://msdn.microsoft.com to detail the implementation.
How much of this is patentable? How much can MS come back on?
I understand that C# is just a reimplementation of Java. It is very clear with the names and overloading of functions that this is the case. So the posibility exists that they can't patent the implementation of C# on other machines.
MS has not been too keen on patents in court, but they also have never really been hurting in their bottom line as yet. When this starts happening we are liable to see a very different MS in this arena.
Another potential issue is how much can FOSS implement C# before MS will change the implementation?
This is all from what I have seen of things so far. I may be way off. I might be right on the money. Time will tell.
But that is not what you would search for. XFree86 is the name found in Articles and such. Somebody wouldn't type in XFree89 because there search might misunderstand typing XFree86.
That was the point of the post. It states if you search for 87 or 84 it works. The specific term XFree86 doesn't work.
They gain a lawsuit against a Linux End User. Plain and Simple.
Two days ago you heard them tauting that they would sue a Linux End User. Last night you heard they were going to announce two.
Today you hear about these two companies.
The MUST be Linux End Users because that is what they said the other day IN THE PRESS.
Most people won't even check to see if that is really what they are suing about, because they believe they already know the answer from previous press releases.
They are trying to pull a Magician's trick of mis-direction. So far, it has been working for them.
What is the problem? There is already implementations of Java that are OpenSource. All the specs are open, and allow for this.
Just because Sun doesn't want to open up their code itself doesn't mean that Java can't be open source.
Mono/C# are interesting, but I want to see C# in a couple years when Microsoft is looking for more ways to make money. All it will take is a little twist and Mono/C# will be a different implementation of C# than MS version. At that point, which one would be "Correct".
Microsoft tried this with Java. They failed because Java is held by Sun. Multiple OS's are what Sun wants for Java. They could have made a Java that ONLY worked on Solaris, but they didn't.
Again, I ask, what is the problem?
P.S. I am not a Sun Employee, I am an Open Source volunteer for OpenOffice.org.
What about CD Camera's? I understand that yes, you could take the pictures off and put them back on, but you would still be able to see on the disc where the changes occured.
You should also be able to see if it is an untampered disc or not, based on the CD itself.
U.K. energy company Powergen finds itself so often confused with a similarly named Italian battery maker that it issues a statement disavowing any connection between the two enterprises. It's not so much the Italian company that the Brits want to distance themselves from as its Web address: Powergenitalia.com.
Nowhere does it state that powergenitalia.com is the UK PowerGen's website. It states it is confused with the Italian Battery makers web site, and that is the reason they want change their name.
Stallman does want all hardware to be Open Source code as well.
;-)
AFAICT anyway.
But, I think he has had enough of a battle with just Software.
He doesn't stop at software. In several of his speeches he talks about a printer that was "Donated" to his department that had proprietary drivers. That was the reason he started GNU.

They'll create a Content Scrambling System, so your vision looks fuzzy if you try to record while viewing. ;-)
Be one heck of a way to keep "Undesirables" off your road.
There is a CD you can download that contains the packages already on the CD ready for you to Emerge. I think it is around 2 or 3 cds.
It is kinda pre-disposed to be Gentoo Flameworthy, eh. :-)
Gentoo does allow you to install Binary Packages for alot of larger packages. There is also a binary download option in the `emerge` command that will download and install the Binary Package built by a maintainer.
There is a way to export DocBook format. It is in the install as a custom install entry. You need Java for it to work.
They also have never contacted a Mailing List via email either.

I use Vim. ;-) Vi isn't feature rich enough for me.
BTW, kidding aside I use Vim for code and HTML. OOo does a good job of HTML, I just like more of a hands on feel.
This is exactly what OOo needed. Free advertising.

Imagine that.
This is great. Thanks again Microsoft.

Correct?
get behind Kaffe? ... or Blackdown? ...or something else?
This is allowed under the Java Community Process, etc. It would be an open source Java based on the JCP.
Wouldn't it?
My only problem with Mono is this:
Do we know exactly what patents/IP MS has up their sleeve to kill Mono should they need to?

Thanks, that's a better comparison. Same idea I had but worded a whole lot better.
Admins just didn't realize that was how there box was hacked until after they saw the symptoms.
With the patch in hand, people can say, "Oh THAT was how they did it."
LiteStep has a module that does Virtual Paging. Does that count?
http://www.litestep.net
I have been using it for about 6+ months now.
This is exactly what I was talking about. With C#, they can do whatever they want to.
.NET is used a little more widely before changing things.
Of course, they will wait till
This is of course, my own personal opinion, based on what I have seen Microsoft do in the past, and try to do with Java.
What is the problem? There is already implementations of Java that are OpenSource. All the specs are open, and allow for this.
