One of my Uni internships was with them, I worked with TSF at their HQ in summer 2002, helping set up their new equipment and also for liaison with the Red Cross during the Venezuela floods that July. They're great people, and they provide priceless service to the other organizations and especially to those families who can get in touch with their relatives. It was a great experience.
I have a 12,1 computer, bought it two years ago, it's notthing new, it's not a netbook it's a LAPTOP.
I thought the whole point of the "netbook" fad was portability... I guess now everyone's so hooked on the new name they don't give a shit anymore. If it quacks like a duck it's a duck not a fucking goose.
The one serious advantage of intelligent entities is that we can look at the solutions used elsewhere and adopt them to our purposes. Nature doesn't have that option.
That's the basis behind Primer:
No one would say that what they were doing was complicated. It wouldn't even be considered new, except for maybe in the geological sense. They took from their surroundings what was needed and made of it something more.
UMDs could easily be scratched because some genius at SONY R&D decided it would be a good idea to remove the protective sliding cover for whatever reason. Minidiscs have the same form-factor (with slightly cosmetic differences) and a protection over the opening for when the disc is not in use. Just like floppies. They are extremely robust and can last for years without any issue. My first MDs from 12 years ago still work like new.
Now loading time and battery issues, that's another story.:)
Their major blunder with the PSP/UMD was to redesign an existing concepot (the Minidisc) as the UMD to differentiate between the new shiny better one and the old.
Thing is, the Minidisc had a minor but loyal following, and in 2004 got a major upgrade with the Hi-MD format that allowed data and video to be trasnferred on top of music. And the major advantage of the format compared to the newfangled UMD was that it was rewritable.
If they had released the PSP with Minidisc games, videos and whatnot, I'm sure the console's story would have been completely different. Even with the Memory stick slot on the side. Both rewritable formats, and they'd have been SONY so presumably they wouldn't have lost anything. Of course that would have meant trusting the customers with an relatively open media, and that's something they're allergic to.
Instead they created the UMDs, closed and crippled them, and tried to sell them at the same price as full blown DVDs. No wonder it didn't take off. Meh.
Can't say about others, but personally I'm incapable of reading anything else than a tech manuals on a screen. If it's big and lengthy, I go for the dead tree style. There's been a few books I've started reading on a PC but I ended buying it and reading it, dare I say, "for real".
How much physical space they occupy is irrelevant, there's just no replacement to the flexibility real books offer.
After a little research, it became clear that the product in question was indeed terrible.
That's your first and most important mistake here. Never ever trust a single source, especially if they're the ones getting your moneys. I always check several sites and try to have feedback from actual users before making any tech purchase. That shit's usually expensive enough, if it also blows up in my face two days after I buy I'll be pretty pissed...
Dupe or not, I don't care, I missed it the first time and I'm glad I didn't this one.
In the beginning it reminded me of how cool it is to fly, and I don't mean airliner, I mean small plane, ideally old-school open cockpit. It's not only all kinds of fun, it always detaches you from the world below and its petty concerns, in a way. Up there, you're literally free as a bird, it's magic.
Second half of the vid was one hell of a skydive!:D
Unfortunately, the brief is currently travelling towards Mars where it will arrive in 2,237 years and two months. One of the clerks must have put a decimal point in the wrong place or something. A senior partner who asked to remain anonymous was quoted saying: "Shit, they always do that. They always mess up some mundane detail."
Frankly could we stop with this stupid "Terminator Vision" meme? I understand it's an easy simile to make for the masses but until we have our phone chips embedded in the brain, just looking at the stuff makes it clear as day that it's nowhere near as advanced as it sounds, it's just a stupid way to advertise the stuff...
I'd love to see a sequel to System Shock 2, a third installment would not only complete the Shock series, it would also complete the great "Looking Glass Trinity" as one could call it: Thief, Shock, Deus Ex. Two of these have "lived" to see a third, as DX3 is currently in the works. Thief will even have a #4...
(I'm aware that DX isn't technically an LG game, but its development was heavily influenced by Shock and Thief to say the least.)
Plus Shock 2 just turned 10 this week;)
Sadly it will probably never be done. EA may have some trademark but the whole Shock licence is scattered among people who probably don't know or care that they have it. Even Levine back in the day couldn't trace it back.
On the other end of the scale it can also be seen as a life saver for a company precisely because everyone knows the name.
For example, the French Thomson SA is in a middle of restructuring, changed its field of business, and has been struggling because people still see it as a cheap brand of consumer electronics whereas they are now catering to pro industry clients. So changing name = blank slate, as it were.
Not necessarily what happens here with "The Shack" (name sounds ridiculous btw), just saying that it can be carefully planned decision, and possibly financially sound.
The good thing about them is precisely that they don't forgive bad handling. ie. "scraping horribly along the page". After you learn how to hold them properly, writing is a breeze, and looks much more stylish than ball-point. It's the best thing after bona-fide calligraphy.
I use ball-point for day-to-day operation (to-do lists, forms, and the like) but for any serious writing such as letters, fountain pen is the way to go.
Disclaimer: I happen to write extremely good-looking cursive with fountain pen (according to most who read it, not just me, although it's also usually small) so I'm kind of biased:) I still use my trusty high-school/Uni pen in fact. I'm 29 btw.
Apollo 12 landed a walking distance from the Surveyor 3 probe and collected samples and pieces to study the effects of long exposure to the "elements".
We don't need to go to the Apollo 11 landing site. We don't even need to go to the fucking moon again right now. NASA, listen to Aldrin and go to MARS for Pete's sake. That's what you should focus on!

"making stuff better" also has multiple syllables. Maybe you meant muli word? Shit no, that too... Can you make a car analogy? I'm lost here...

First I thought you meant some kind of old spec'd machine but no, it really is an actual (albeit animatronic) dinosaur that runs Linux.
Funny they should do that precisely on WM 6.5's launchday...

even back then they had problem with dupes. Dang.
I think their point is that it's the first HD video, not the first video.

Awesome flight, kudos guys!

Well you never know the tripod could start moving and shrieking Ulla Ulla Ulla and shit. I don't trust these bastards, never have never will.
Yeah, plus with the lack of bad weather even Blizzardcon would be out of option. Bummer.

Oh, I totally agree.
A sequel just for the heck of it would be a terrible idea.

Crap the URL to the Apollo 12 page didn't make it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_12/ sorry...

"Orly" also happens to be an airport in France. THIS IS NO ACCIDENT SIR.
