About Metroid , mod as you will, but I think if they had implemented a decent online mode (instead of the golden eyetastic 4 player deathmatch) the sales were had been a lot more impressive. Xbox: halo 2, ps2: socom, cube: metroid online! The 1 player mode is great but the deathmatch is a complete joke. (heres hoping for the DS version)

btw: Im a developer and I can tell you this, if you place a game in a shelf same topic, same gameplay one with superior graphics and one with regular graphics, the one with best graphics gets picked. Actually Im pretty sure if halo 1 and 2 had the same features (dual handling, online and all) and were released on the same time but just had different graphics, halo 2 would get picked.
Nintendo is SUCH a better company and SO much more trustworthy than sony. I mean just look at the DS coming announcement:

That was sick and kind of funny in a twisted way BUT very inacurate, the Gba 2 is rumored to be released all the way 'til 2006, so DS owners have nothing to worry about (for a good year or two) however I have to agree if nintendo even tried to pull the DS too soon just to increase GBA 2 sales , it would be much worse than all the PSP glitches rolled together and probably will lose a good part of their fanbase in the process.

Tip: IT was not a huge known problem! its a tiny problem people just realized it has! how much time has the PSP been out, and how many times have you heard of this problem?
A poster already mentioned it, if you read all Japanese responses on problems found in any device, they answer is always the same: "its such a tiny problem, its perfect even with it!". Yes, it sounds stupid, but they are all the same. Hoping for another answer is like expecting an honest american preview saying "its just a piece of crap!" go ahead try to find ONE (even on extremely crappy games).
You also apparently believe Sony will never fix the problem. IT will be fixed. theres a coming American release of the PSP and I bet money all these glitches will be gone with it. Guys I hate to break your bubble BUT where I live my friends (and customers) are buying the PSP at $500 (almost 4 times the estimated final price) no one has complaint about the battery (they charge it once a day, and we actually advice them that), no one has found or noticed not even one single glitch (this button glitch will be news to them). They are as happy as can be with it and surpringsily the psp's are outsold here.
I have only seen 2 DS being sold (by known n fanboys btw), most customers ask for it then return it after seing the graphics/games and checking the price.($200) (gba's sp are getting sold very well though $50)
Actually the only reason why I havent got a PSP yet is that im waiting for the American Release (for the price mostly)
Probably you dont know it but theres a rumor about a gba 2 in the works (sort of a portable gamecube) actually if you read back in the revolution rumor article slashdotted a while ago you will notice the system will lack DS support, but will support the "gba succesor".
The DS (as everyone knows) was a way to keep the PSP at bay (actually Nintendo never called the DS the GBA succesor) so.. although unconfirmed, the fact that they never called it a "succesor" is a bit worrying.
Of course this is great news for everyone except for those who actually bought the DS. how much time will the DS be in the attention span of nintendo? (a year maybe 2?) You may want to pay attention to the early signs, lack of advertising, lack of titles or big titles being produced (in the future) etc. (You have to take into account a major such as a 3d rpg title needs a good 1-2 year timespan to be produced)
Of course this is all rumors.. however we have to wait until e3 where "revolution" (apparently) will officially be announced and hope they mention DS support or any word of a gba succesor.
P.S. Even if this rumor is true, it doesnt mean the DS is dead, revolution is rumored for a 2006 release, the gba 2 is not even dated yet, so thats a 1-2 maybe 3 year expected life period for the DS however it does mean it may have less attention and titles than those initially expected (specially from third party publishers). And if theres an actual GBA2 in the works, the PSP may be facing some serious problems in the coming years

Magazines and sites in general dont give a crap about old products (which you already own) what they want is to hype products you are considering buying. And while they can lie in a preview (since no one can compare), a review has to be a bit more "honest" (but still try to get the purchase) once past its "buytime" they dont care about X game, and is only used as reference to another game.

Is called "modding" and "expansion packs" PC has been doing it for years and nobody has yet shed a tear over it, not even once (well there was the nude pack for Larry but that was a different history). They are just trying to bring the "pc experience" to the non-geek... and failing miserably at it since only geeks care for those. (have you ever meet a non-geek with the ninja gaiden, kotor, halo 2, socom or splinter cell downloadable content installed? )
I just want to play devils advocate for a while here (goes out to the pinball machine ) when developers say "movie quality" they are actually telling the truth, the catch is that they do not mention the date of the movie they are using for reference...
Games today,(some at least) are pretty much the same quality than CGI movies of the early 80-90's, Take tron 2.0 per example, the game looks much better than the original CGI in the early 80's movie. Actually in the famous presentation of the geforce 3 (where Doom3 was presented by Carmack) nVidia had a realtime presentation of "Flexo Jr" the first movie pixar made (and which is shown in their logo). If you dont think thats impressive, dont worry, the audience didnt get it either.
So when they say "movie quality" today they are probably referring to Tin toy or maybe toy story 1 (tops) not Shreck or the Lord of the rings.
Sad as it may be, games CGI versus movie CGI is like trying to catch up your older brother age. No matter how old you get, he will always be older than you. Games need fast processors (and several tricks) to make images more realistic and each generation processors get faster and developers learn new tricks, BUT movies can use the very same tricks millions of times and take hours per frame without anyone complaining for the shot being slower than 1/60 of a second.
Sometimes though, the tricks get so authentic is hard to surpass them with anything else, take GT4 (or forza motorsport) per example. While some shots still look like CGI from a mile. Some of them are good enough to trick any eye. (specially if caught at movement and a decent distance) will some day the baby brother catch up? Well... theres an actual limit for photo realism and that is well.. reality. and once film and games reach that point, theres nowhere else to go, But we are still a really,really far way from there. (and only then we can worry about people actually confusing reality with games and not only saying so to get media attention and out of law problems)
Peripherals does not equal "innovation" it basically means they want you to expend more money (on devices) to play the same games .
Innovation is when a game is created and that breaks with the schemes set by other games before or when a possibility in a genere never explored before is used. There are TONS of innovative games (REZ, ico, pimkin, katamari damacy etc) but they are overweighted by the flashy hyped games that fit in a more commercial criteria. (innovation does not guarantee success) thats why most companies aim at standard games BUT try to set records in realism, or "shock value" .
And by the way. Nintendo DID NOT invented any of those devices they simply "ported" them to their systems.

XBOX outselling PS2 . I wish that was true, the xbox salesmarks are not even close to those of the ps2 by several millions. The xbox is STILL number 3 in sales in Japan.
xbox2 most probably will be announced/ released at the same time that the ps3, (along with nintendo's "big surprise" tm. ) besides getting to the market first means crap, no actual advantage comes from it.(actually it means its technology will get older first)

A good RE title Is probably the coolest way to say goodbye to the "kiddie" console.
The same can be said for the other consoles though , GTA:SA finally showed up. Halo 2 is still the most played game in xlive (mechassault didnt even put a dent to it) theres really not that much to see, (doom 3 for xbox if you havent seen the pc version [b]might[/b] be interested but dont expect much) except price drops for all consoles. If you havent bought yours (yet) this is probably the best time to get it very cheap. (hmm a ps2 for me?)

Yup, in a commercial sense, Adventure games are dead. In a freeware sense, however, it has never been easier to create your own adventure games. Sure, there may be another old-school, official Monkey Island, or King's Quest, but independent developers are churning out more high-quality AGS titles than ever, most of them completely free.

Magna cum laude 3d was a waste of time, Im not even going to argue there, go to gameranking or rent it if you dont believe me, the jokes werent that funny and most of them were too juvenile, crude and oftenly involved potty jokes (press Y to fart ! amazing!) the history was.. well there wasnt actually an history you just tried to get laid with girl A get her interested eventually get rejected by an idiotic reason (who the fuck come with the idea of a jew cowgirl?) do the same with girl B repeating ad nauseum. And the mini games, seriously I can do better games in flash and they are far more interesting. I dont know about you but my copy is back at the e-shop by now.

Let me save you some money DONT bother, unless this guys are actually thinking on a REMAKE of the original instead of a long arcade/platform/mini game session with name recognition, this game will be a waste of time not even a nude patch would save.
Lets face it, adventure games are pretty much dead, (unless you are able to play the retro versions in emulators) broken sword didnt had good sales, syberia didnt either not even CSI had good luck, FPS,RPG's, Sports (racing and included), Action and MiniGame (party and music) titles pretty much dominate the entire market.

Heres an advice for the kids case, make them pay the ticket/bill make them cleanup and add a fresh coat of paint to all of their mess and then gently remove their ps2(s) from their tiny clutches for a period from 6 months to 2 years. They probably wont be forced into crime by satan for a pretty good time. Do otherwise and most probably the devil will be whispering another tune up their ears quite soon.

Anyway, old school players will be glad to know that the game is going to be a sequel to quake 2 and that is going to put the doom3 engine to good use specially in multiplayer. And in case you havent noticed doom 3 doesnt need a new GFX card. It needs a better cpu and memory. thats wat actually alters the fps you get.
Contrary to last years (madden game of the year, matrix goty, yuck!), the results were almost spot on. HL2 as best pc game, and GTA:SA as GOTY (instead of madden or def jaf vendetta) makes sense from a players perspective. It was a good idea to let actual viewers vote.
A couple of surprises though, is curious and sad that Doom 3 and MGS3 didnt won a single award and is kind of cool to know that MK:deception was voted as best fighting game, halo 2 as best fps over doom 3 and hl2 (Well... if you mean by the multiplayer game I think I can agree on that) although hl2 won best pc game and best graphics (to keep balance), burnout 3 beat everyone else as a racing game (is a game about spectacular crashing cars at 200mph you have to admit is tempting). Im kind of unsure about fable but considering it wasnt competing against kotor 2 (which was delivered later in the year) its a lot better than the other nominees.
Let me see if I can find an article about some guy praising Sony and another praising MS then slashdot them all, thats the only way I can think of keeping our supposed "unbiased" status here in slashdot.

You cringed all over when MS tried to make all windows users pay an annual fee, but you just smiled when Nintendo forced everyone to buy 4 gameboys for a four player game (even if you had the controllers!) when they could have made a cool multiplayer online game instead, get you act together guys. geek is cool, blind fanboyism is not.
Just to beat some sense to you consider this the DS is a double screened gameboy with a nintendo 64 chip in it. the second screen is a cheap touchscreen from a palm, at the end you are just getting a cheap palm. Why they didnt made a portable gamecube with a miniDVD disk instead? each time you say "battery consumption" or "loading times" slap your face as hard as you can. the answer is "Because is a LOT cheaper! and with their fanbase they wil still make the same profit even if its completely underpowered!" maybe you will be able to beat the fan boy out of you. maybe not.

That was sick and kind of funny in a twisted way BUT very inacurate, the Gba 2 is rumored to be released all the way 'til 2006, so DS owners have nothing to worry about (for a good year or two) however I have to agree if nintendo even tried to pull the DS too soon just to increase GBA 2 sales , it would be much worse than all the PSP glitches rolled together and probably will lose a good part of their fanbase in the process.
Btw the parent maybe a troll or flamebait but unfortunately not offtopic. Slashdot has simply ignored that probable situation in favor of reporting every tiny glitch in the psp.
First of all, the Article clearly mentions "Flaw found in sony psp". your article seems to be about sony's petulent reaction to a wide known, huge problem. Tip: IT was not a huge known problem! its a tiny problem people just realized it has! how much time has the PSP been out, and how many times have you heard of this problem?
A poster already mentioned it, if you read all Japanese responses on problems found in any device, they answer is always the same: "its such a tiny problem, its perfect even with it!". Yes, it sounds stupid, but they are all the same. Hoping for another answer is like expecting an honest american preview saying "its just a piece of crap!" go ahead try to find ONE (even on extremely crappy games).
You also apparently believe Sony will never fix the problem. IT will be fixed. theres a coming American release of the PSP and I bet money all these glitches will be gone with it. (I mean, they are not even difficult to fix!) probably later and update will probably be released in Japan. Sony does this.
I mean seriously you have no idea how many playstation(1 and 2) versions are there? you think they release the same version for 5 years? (that I know of they are at least 5 ps1 versions each with different fixes and features).
The psp reasons for failure:*Price, battery, glitches. DS WILL RULE!
Guys I hate to break your bubble BUT where I live my friends (and customers) are buying the PSP at $500 (almost 4 times the estimated final price) no one has complaint about the battery (they charge it once a day, and we actually advice them that), no one has found or noticed not even one single glitch (this button glitch will be news to them). They are as happy as can be with it and surpringsily the psp's are outsold here.
I have only seen 2 DS being sold (by known n fanboys btw), most customers ask for it then return it after seing the graphics/games and checking the price.($200)
(gba's sp are getting sold very well though $50)

Probably you dont know it but theres a rumor about a gba 2 in the works (sort of a portable gamecube) actually if you read back in the revolution rumor article slashdotted a while ago you will notice the system will lack DS support, but will support the "gba succesor".
.. although unconfirmed, the fact that they never called it a "succesor" is a bit worrying.
The DS (as everyone knows) was a way to keep the PSP at bay (actually Nintendo never called the DS the GBA succesor) so
Of course this is great news for everyone except for those who actually bought the DS. how much time will the DS be in the attention span of nintendo? (a year maybe 2?) You may want to pay attention to the early signs, lack of advertising, lack of titles or big titles being produced (in the future) etc. (You have to take into account a major such as a 3d rpg title needs a good 1-2 year timespan to be produced)
Of course this is all rumors.. however we have to wait until e3 where "revolution" (apparently) will officially be announced and hope they mention DS support or any word of a gba succesor.
P.S. Even if this rumor is true, it doesnt mean the DS is dead, revolution is rumored for a 2006 release, the gba 2 is not even dated yet, so thats a 1-2 maybe 3 year expected life period for the DS however it does mean it may have less attention and titles than those initially expected (specially from third party publishers). And if theres an actual GBA2 in the works, the PSP may be facing some serious problems in the coming years
And before you mod me down, please research a bit, the rumors do exist and so the official statements where Nintendo specifically mentions the DS is not the GBA succesor.

And while they can lie in a preview (since no one can compare), a review has to be a bit more "honest" (but still try to get the purchase) once past its "buytime" they dont care about X game, and is only used as reference to another game.
Exactly! (read parent) I mean why do they want a console? if they can play Quake, Halo, Counterstrike and Mercenaries for real! (all they have to do is to set a huge riot!) the only catch is they only have a life and no respawns!
Just in case you were wondering , the theory about getting good at aiming with games is bullshit, I have tried it and my real aiming has actually gotten worse. (Im getting good at sniping in halo though)

Is called "modding" and "expansion packs" PC has been doing it for years and nobody has yet shed a tear over it, not even once (well there was the nude pack for Larry but that was a different history). They are just trying to bring the "pc experience" to the non-geek... and failing miserably at it since only geeks care for those. (have you ever meet a non-geek with the ninja gaiden, kotor, halo 2, socom or splinter cell downloadable content installed? )
I just want to play devils advocate for a while here (goes out to the pinball machine ) when developers say "movie quality" they are actually telling the truth, the catch is that they do not mention the date of the movie they are using for reference...
Games today,(some at least) are pretty much the same quality than CGI movies of the early 80-90's, Take tron 2.0 per example, the game looks much better than the original CGI in the early 80's movie.
Actually in the famous presentation of the geforce 3 (where Doom3 was presented by Carmack) nVidia had a realtime presentation of "Flexo Jr" the first movie pixar made (and which is shown in their logo). If you dont think thats impressive, dont worry, the audience didnt get it either.
So when they say "movie quality" today they are probably referring to Tin toy or maybe toy story 1 (tops) not Shreck or the Lord of the rings.
Sad as it may be, games CGI versus movie CGI is like trying to catch up your older brother age. No matter how old you get, he will always be older than you. Games need fast processors (and several tricks) to make images more realistic and each generation processors get faster and developers learn new tricks, BUT movies can use the very same tricks millions of times and take hours per frame without anyone complaining for the shot being slower than 1/60 of a second.
Sometimes though, the tricks get so authentic is hard to surpass them with anything else, take GT4 (or forza motorsport) per example. While some shots still look like CGI from a mile. Some of them are good enough to trick any eye. (specially if caught at movement and a decent distance) will some day the baby brother catch up? Well... theres an actual limit for photo realism and that is well.. reality. and once film and games reach that point, theres nowhere else to go, But we are still a really,really far way from there. (and only then we can worry about people actually confusing reality with games and not only saying so to get media attention and out of law problems)
Innovation is when a game is created and that breaks with the schemes set by other games before or when a possibility in a genere never explored before is used. There are TONS of innovative games (REZ, ico, pimkin, katamari damacy etc) but they are overweighted by the flashy hyped games that fit in a more commercial criteria. (innovation does not guarantee success) thats why most companies aim at standard games BUT try to set records in realism, or "shock value" .
And by the way. Nintendo DID NOT invented any of those devices they simply "ported" them to their systems.
Oh yeah and they did not invented: Pokemon, Wario, Metroid (which is basically a clone of castlevania) either. They were made by small indie companies and sold to Nintendo afterwards. Their only original and succesful franchises are Mario and Zelda.

If you read (not even the article) the headline. It clearly reads "leaked" in other words "warez'ed" in other words "pirated" in other words "It could have been a damn virus destroying the entire PSP but these people were stupid enough to put it in!" Im surprised sony is actually helping those guys who obviously used pirated software in their machine.

XBOX outselling PS2 . I wish that was true, the xbox salesmarks are not even close to those of the ps2 by several millions. The xbox is STILL number 3 in sales in Japan.
xbox2 most probably will be announced/ released at the same time that the ps3, (along with nintendo's "big surprise" tm. ) besides getting to the market first means crap, no actual advantage comes from it.(actually it means its technology will get older first)

Those "urrefutable proof" and "we know where you live" sentences is pretty much crap. Everybody knows electronic data can be easily fabricated and cant be accepted in an actual trial (unless is certificated by several official sources like verisign and bank servers) so I pretty much doubt any game log or a game server log no matter how comprehensive will do as "urrefutable proof". And we "know where you live" please! have you heard of schools, offices and cyber cafes? even if these guys have used their own houses, you think Hackers have signed up with their "real" names and address? this game doesnt even ask for a CC (which could be stolen or even fabricated by a hacker anyway) trace their IP? when was the last time you meet someone with a registered static IP in their household? I know they are the army and all but technology itself has its limits. This guy just watched "the net" once too many times.
Is this the last cool game we will see for the gamecube? Analysts say the new zelda game will be delayed and then passed to the next console Nintendo is working on. Theres no other interesting projects for the cube at sight. (unless you are interested in possesing dog bowls to scare dogs -penny arcade reference for geist- or playing hoops or ddr with mario) Worst of all, capcom didnt even came through with the exclusivity deal and this game will be available in the ps2 later (although I doubt the graphics will be this good). A good RE title Is probably the coolest way to say goodbye to the "kiddie" console.
The same can be said for the other consoles though , GTA:SA finally showed up. Halo 2 is still the most played game in xlive (mechassault didnt even put a dent to it) theres really not that much to see, (doom 3 for xbox if you havent seen the pc version [b]might[/b] be interested but dont expect much) except price drops for all consoles. If you havent bought yours (yet) this is probably the best time to get it very cheap. (hmm a ps2 for me?)

Yup, in a commercial sense, Adventure games are dead. In a freeware sense, however, it has never been easier to create your own adventure games. Sure, there may be another old-school, official Monkey Island, or King's Quest, but independent developers are churning out more high-quality AGS titles than ever, most of them completely free.

Magna cum laude 3d was a waste of time, Im not even going to argue there, go to gameranking or rent it if you dont believe me, the jokes werent that funny and most of them were too juvenile, crude and oftenly involved potty jokes (press Y to fart ! amazing!) the history was.. well there wasnt actually an history you just tried to get laid with girl A get her interested eventually get rejected by an idiotic reason (who the fuck come with the idea of a jew cowgirl?) do the same with girl B repeating ad nauseum. And the mini games, seriously I can do better games in flash and they are far more interesting. I dont know about you but my copy is back at the e-shop by now.

Let me save you some money DONT bother, unless this guys are actually thinking on a REMAKE of the original instead of a long arcade/platform/mini game session with name recognition, this game will be a waste of time not even a nude patch would save.
Lets face it, adventure games are pretty much dead, (unless you are able to play the retro versions in emulators) broken sword didnt had good sales, syberia didnt either not even CSI had good luck, FPS,RPG's, Sports (racing and included), Action and MiniGame (party and music) titles pretty much dominate the entire market.
Seriously why they didnt just said "the devil made me do it" instead? is just as valid as an excuse and makes just as much sense. Did the church prohibited it or is just not "in" any more, Is gta and MM the new devil and someone forgot to update the holy manuscripts or what?
Seriously I invite you (and any judge and lawyer) to exchange, "I saw it on a movie/game hear it on a tune" for the Phrase: "The devil made me do it" I wont asure you the same level of success (specially on the media). But I do can asure you is a valid sinonym with just as much value.

Heres an advice for the kids case, make them pay the ticket/bill make them cleanup and add a fresh coat of paint to all of their mess and then gently remove their ps2(s) from their tiny clutches for a period from 6 months to 2 years. They probably wont be forced into crime by satan for a pretty good time. Do otherwise and most probably the devil will be whispering another tune up their ears quite soon.

Anyway, old school players will be glad to know that the game is going to be a sequel to quake 2 and that is going to put the doom3 engine to good use specially in multiplayer. And in case you havent noticed doom 3 doesnt need a new GFX card. It needs a better cpu and memory. thats wat actually alters the fps you get.
Contrary to last years (madden game of the year, matrix goty, yuck!), the results were almost spot on. HL2 as best pc game, and GTA:SA as GOTY (instead of madden or def jaf vendetta) makes sense from a players perspective. It was a good idea to let actual viewers vote.
A couple of surprises though, is curious and sad that Doom 3 and MGS3 didnt won a single award and is kind of cool to know that MK:deception was voted as best fighting game, halo 2 as best fps over doom 3 and hl2 (Well... if you mean by the multiplayer game I think I can agree on that) although hl2 won best pc game and best graphics (to keep balance), burnout 3 beat everyone else as a racing game (is a game about spectacular crashing cars at 200mph you have to admit is tempting). Im kind of unsure about fable but considering it wasnt competing against kotor 2 (which was delivered later in the year) its a lot better than the other nominees.
Let me see if I can find an article about some guy praising Sony and another praising MS then slashdot them all, thats the only way I can think of keeping our supposed "unbiased" status here in slashdot.

(slashdot) as far as I know they use linux to code ps2 games didnt you knew that? and every geek I know has a soft spot for cool electronics and thats what sony is all about, they even brought spiderman to the big screen spiderman!
No offense guys but Nintendo is the Walt Disney of the videogames world they created a set of lovable characters (and gameplay styles) about ten years ago and they are still milking every single penny from them and us. All the rest of their creations are bastardizations and clones of their original ones. (wario? metroid 3d? please!)
They have done some clasical good games thats true, but other than the nes and the snes their consoles are simply substandard on purpose (to milk more money out of them) they may look like like some poor rebel independent child loving company but they are a billion dollar backstabing cut throating supercompany like all the rest! (in case you didnt knew family games are the ones who make the most money!) you can even compare them and their business practices to MS at some point. You cringed all over when MS tried to make all windows users pay an annual fee, but you just smiled when Nintendo forced everyone to buy 4 gameboys for a four player game (even if you had the controllers!) when they could have made a cool multiplayer online game instead, get you act together guys. geek is cool, blind fanboyism is not.
Just to beat some sense to you consider this the DS is a double screened gameboy with a nintendo 64 chip in it. the second screen is a cheap touchscreen from a palm, at the end you are just getting a cheap palm. Why they didnt made a portable gamecube with a miniDVD disk instead? each time you say "battery consumption" or "loading times" slap your face as hard as you can. the answer is "Because is a LOT cheaper! and with their fanbase they wil still make the same profit even if its completely underpowered!" maybe you will be able to beat the fan boy out of you. maybe not.
