All Three Next-Gen Consoles at e3 2005

Word is now out that, in all likelyhood, all three next generation consoles will be displayed in some form at this year's e3. Nintendo's Revolution has been rumoured to be making an appearance for a while. Yesterday Sony announced the PS3 would be available in playable form at the convention, and Microsoft was soon to follow regarding the Xbox Next. Game on?

There's also the fact that the prototypes for the Cell chip were only just recently made and are being tested.

If the PS3 is going to be using the Cell, there's going to be at least another year before anything is playable at an E3 or TGS or whatever. Under 5 months is simply not enough time to not only learn an entirely new architecture, but also make playable demos running on said new architecture. And E3 2005 is in less than 5 months.

The only way for the PS3 to have something playable at this year's E3 would be for Sony to change from using the Cell to using a different chip that developers already know (like an x86 or PPC variant, or maybe an updated Emotion Engine), and they could throw together playable tech demos.

But, if Sony still is adamant about using the Cell chip, then it's going to be at least another few months before they can even have development kits ready for developers to begin learning the new architecture on. In that case, don't expect to see "playable" PS3 units at E3 this year.

MS has nothing to lose and everything to gain by pushing for this generation to die a year early.

Revolution and PS3 will compete a la DS and PSP. That is, they will probably come out within months of each other, with vastly different approaches. Sony will continue trying to bruteforce in all directions, while Nintendo will change the rules with something interesting once again. In contrast to MS, they will leave MS the headstart advantage and concentrate on being better systems (where better means either "more powerful" or "more economically viable"). PS3 is already expected to be more powerful than Xbox 2 according to the press (my friends can't confirm), while Revolution's specs are even less understood than those of the PS3. This is the battle I'm waiting to watch. Xbox 2 wil have its fans just because of the brand recognition that MS has bought in this generation, but the interesting fight will be between Sony's powerhouse system and whatever new stuff Nintendo pulls off. NT is a solid OS and a solid Kernel Technology, it is the Win32 and the Windows Subsystem that people don't like and target for viruses.

NT (pure NT) is a solid strong OS design, Cutler and his team were no fools.

The second thing is DirectX. Everyone seems to keep thinking it is just about video and compares it to OpenGL.
      1) DirectX would not have existed if the OpenGL Group that MS was a part would have advanced OpenGL at the time to support lower hardware level access like Microsoft proposed. They refused, and Microsoft came up with DirextX themselves. The OpenGL group did not see 3D in video hardware the way Microsoft did and also wasn't about catering to pushing pixels for games.
      2) DirectX cannot be compared to just Open GL because it encompasses all input and multi-media on the computer - further giving developers easy and LOWER level access from everything from the Keyboards, and Joysticks to Sounds Cards and pushing packets over a network for remote game play.

This is why DirectX IS successful, and it is also why, unfortunately, Windows is the main and best Gaming OS platform.

For DirectX to be replaced in open source, we all need to understand it better and WHY it IS successful. We can't just count on OpenGL, we need a full implementation that covers all areas of hardware and gaming like DirectX does. Period.

And neither will they use standard OpenGL, their hardware will have special features which the game will want to use, I kind of doubt that they will wait till the ARB has accepted their extensions instead they will make it so that it works for the PS3 and give little to nothing about compatibility. They for sure won't make much of their API puplically available either.

Last not least, even if their Linux will be open and even if you can dd your PS3 DVDs into an ISO file or export them via NFS, you are still stuck with some weird architecture binary which will be borth nothing on your standard PC.

When I see ads for brand-new, just realeased console games like Halo 2 I can totally tell the difference including lack of polygons, lack of textures, lack of lighting and minor or no bump mapping. It's pretty hard to get excited when the latest and greates Xbox and PS2 games just cant compare to the look of the PC.

Let me put it another way. When you see the stills and the videos from the consoles at E3, you're going to be blown away. That wouldn't be the case if the graphics weren't vastly improve and it wouldn't be the case if the graphics didn't matter. The PC has most of that capability right now without waiting for the PS3 realease in a year or two. By the time the PS3 hits the shelf the PC will most likely be dead even with the PS3 in graphics capabilities and a year later it will be better. Paper Mario's true uniqueness comes from the derandomized, battle system that offers a play mechanic that involved changing the rules to battle (Badges). It is true that that was also used in the first game, but in game circles people typically don't complain until you've copied something twice.

Metroid was a fantastic game, but built on a series close to 20 years old.
Yeah, but the play style was created anew for the game, due to it being in 3D, so it doesn't count.

Just because a game happens to be in the same "universe," or have the same characters, as a previous one doesn't mean it's a brainless copy of the original, especially in Nintendo's case. The Mario series now numbers eight "main" games: Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., SMB2, SMB3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. Each has offered considerable differences from the one before.

For any other company this would be amazing, but Nintendo's reputation has gotten so elevated that every game is now expected to be a revolutionary thing. (How many Crash Bandicoots were made with almost identical gameplay?) Which no one can do, not even Nintendo.

But Nintendo does take chances with their core franchises -- and sometimes they pay the price for those chances, like when a bunch of know-nothing gamers snub Wind Waker because of cel shading. But Wind Waker's vast explorable ocean also bugged some gamers. I thought it was terrific, but some complain that it's largely empty. Even the EyeToy style input will probably always be a bit more limited than hand controls - though eventually it should be able to interpret hand signals like sign language, which would be interesting.

I prefer a high resolution over a large screen (which is a major benefit of PCs, very high resolutions are supported)

How are you going to crowd four people around a 17" monitor, even if you are running it at 1600 pixels across? And with a 17" monitor, how are you going to play a game like StepMania where you're standing on a controller whose center is four feet away from the monitor?

I'm sorry, but I actually have more than one computer per person in my house

Many people reading this don't have that kind of money, you insensitive clod! How do you suggest that they avoid the problem of "sorry, we went with another candidate" when looking for a better source of income in order to buy a decent computer for each kid?

Most of the 2 player games I own are racing games and it's really annoying playing a game with a split screen even on a 57" TV.

Some older racing games such as Super Off Road aren't split screen; they're still screen covering the whole track. A lot of multiplayer games use a relatively still screen; these include Bomberman, Smash Bros., any other fighting game, sport sims, etc. Even some split-screen games are designed to look good in a split screen, often using side-by-side vertically-oriented playfields. These include Tetris, Puyo, Bust-A-Move, Tetris Attack, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and the like.

And the majority of PS2 games I have would benefit from a mouse and keyboard.

    Then buy your adapter.

That all depends on the game, I can plug a few hundred joysticks into the computer if I wanted to (USB) but unless the game supports 100+ joysticks it's not going to work.

That's the problem. Even with USB hubs being multitaps, very few PC titles support four player simultaneous play on one screen. Most titles that do support such a mode of play are console exclusives, and I take it you know how stuck-up the publishers are about emulation.

But could you game on a TV and surf on a VGA monitor at the same time?

The idea that people need to "run wires from their computer" is being replaced by the idea that people will buy a capable computer just to go in the entertainment center. If that's the case (I certainly did) then that media center PC all of a sudden is set to become a serious gaming machine.

So how can poorer people like myself afford to purchase and maintain a second computer? A $100 GameCube, a $40 DVD player, and a $40 VHS VCR are still a lot cheaper than a $520 Mac mini with a TV-out adapter and a $150 FireWire TV-in adapter.

This is the real rub. A huge chunk of this boils down to economics. My system is not at all typical and it's very expensive if you were to set it up from scratch. How on earth could I suggest it to others?

However, when you compare the Mac Mini 2006 and Windows Media Center 2006 setup to the next generation of consoles, things might end up looking a lot different. Knowledgeable people peg the next gen consoles at $400+ when first released. If that's the case, the extra cost for the Mini might not seem so high. If PC makers resopond with some low cost MCE computers, a real possibility considering the time frame involved and the quick responsivenes of PC manufacturers to a genuine market, then things will start to look even more interesting.

Of course then you have another problem. The thing I so much like about my PC is that I don't have to wait 5 years between realeases of the latest video cards. That jacks up the cost because you'll be buying your PS3 once in the same time I'll be buying many hundreds of dollars more of PC gear. But I don't have to buy more gear if I don't want to. It's my choice. And I very much like having that choice.
