  1. Ask a lawyer on Ask Slashdot: How To Become Informed In Judicial Elections? · · Score: 3, Informative

I asked my friend who's a general practice lawyer. He does defense work, family law etc. They tend to know all of the people running personally and are most interested in a fair and impartial judge regardless of party. Other than that I couldn't find any information online or in newspapers. The media doesn't seem to care about district/municipal judges which is incorrigible since they influence the general public more directly than any other elected official.

I'm in a similar situation as he is. The problem isn't so simple. I've been trying to get a real h/w job since I was hired on (going on 5 years now... let's just say what was promised in the interview didn't occur). Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have a paycheck, especially since I hired on shortly after 9/11 when most couldn't get ANY job. If he's anything like me, his company outsources all of the real engineering (the true fun design work), and you're basically a project manager.

NOBODY wants you. Even with creative resume writing, it's nigh impossible to get a real engineering job (or it has been for me). I've had some interviews, but they always hire the guy with x years experience in the field. The more time that passes, the worse it gets. If you can find a company that'll hire an engineer with no real world design experience and still pay him better than entry level (gotta support the family), I'd like to know about it.

I'm very actively trying to get the hell out of here, into another systems engineering type job at a place with better schools around. The only solution I've found is to go back to school and get my MSEE. Perhaps then, companies might be willing to give my resume a closer look.

If I can't get out of here then I suppose I'll just have to resign myself to never doing anything of any consequence, and take the mercenery route.

You are right though, IMHO a Masters is kind of a waste. BSEE/EIT should be good enough for most design work, but it hasn't born out that way in practice.

The better way would be to run XBMC (XBox Media Center), and xbmcmythtv. It's not perfect yet, but it's definately getting there. It requires a modded xbox (which you have), and doesn't require installing/booting linux, so it's quicker. It's a bit tricky to get ahold of the programs, since the source is distributable, but the binaries are not (MS won't sign them [hence mod required], and the xbox SDK forbids the distribution of non-signed binaries). They can be found with some digging.

Their development kit had an interface to RS-232. You just plugged the radio into the board and plugged it into your computer. Hyperterminal runs very well with it, so I assume you could run whatever you want over through radio so long as you pay close attention to it's max buffer size, and speed (but getting ssh to interface with the com0 might take some work - unless it does this already).

Alternatively, you could easily make your own board to interface between your PC/MAC's com port and the radio. It's not much more than a MAX232? (made by Maxim, converts uart to rs232 signal levels), and a header to plug in the board. The maxstream development kit itself was pretty expensive for what it did.

I'm faimiliar with MaxStream, good company, good products. They even gave us a little student discount. Used their 9xStream in my senior design project. Great for low bandwidth/low power embedded applications and extremely easy to integrate (simple UART IIRC). Just pick your own protocol and let the radio do its magic (ie nothing but basic RF knowledge required). This makes me think about picking up that project again and seeing what the extra distance might do.
