First of all, I have no idea about the OP's condition which is why I couldn't comment on his particular circumstances.

Secondly, my point in short was that "not being able to drive is NOT an excuse not to recycle". That is ON ITS OWN, IT IS NOT AN EXCUSE. I said nothing about being infirm or unable. There are plenty of people that DO drive and still don't recycle, driving in itself IS NOT RELEVANT to whether or not you recycle.

The point remains that IF you regularly do your shopping at a supermarket where there are recycling facilities then no matter how you get there, if you can mange to carry your shopping then you should be able to manage a few empty bottles and some cardboard.

As for "offloading anything you don't want to take responsibility for" at the supermarket's garbage can. I was referring more to excess cardboard outer packaging which in many case could be dropped in the paper/cardboard recycling bin at the supermarket BEFORE YOU LEAVE to save you carrying it home and then back to the supermarket next time you shop.

And speaking of taking responsibility - if you hadn't chickened out and posted as AC then perhaps you'd be reading this reply to your insane dribble. Now fuck off.

The argument that you don't drive so you can't recycle doesn't hold water on its own. I can't berate you personally because I don't know your particular circumstances. If you have to do all your shopping in a local corner shop/convenience store then fair enough they don't have recycling facilities so you can only rely on what the local authority provides. However there are hundreds of thousands or millions of people who do their shopping in supermarkets (most of which have bottle banks and such) who don't take their recyclables back - regardless of whether they drive there or not. Empty packaging weighs a hell of a lot less than the full bags of shopping you bring back from the supermarket so even if you're making your regular shop by bus or walking there is no excuse not to take along your bottles (glass and plastic), tins and cardboard in the plastic carrier bags you got from the supermarket last time you went, emptying them and reusing the bags to bring home your new shopping. Hell why not leave some of the outer packaging at the supermarket before you leave. And yes, I do this. I haven't taken a new carrier bag from a supermarket for months, it's not hard and I no longer have drawers stuffed with the things.

Ok, I've read the article and a whole lot of comments about having to replace the entire expensive assembly when it goes off at the wrong time so forgive my ignorance. I don't understand why the entire blade needs to be replaced except for the fact it get damaged in the whole stopping-with-a-big-metal-brake scenario. Having watched the demo (some years ago as it happens) the blade is pulled out of the way and out of view seemingly before it has gone any way towards stopping. So why bother stopping it at all? Pulling it out of the way would seem to be enough to complete the saving fingers task. That would mean you're only left to replace the fuse which for some reason can't be a circuit breaker with a reset button. Of course false positives are still going to be a pain in the ass but a safety-mode OFF button could fix that, obviously making it readily apparent to the user that doing such a thing is ill advised. Perhaps it should be two keys which have to be turned simultaneously in awkward positions, responsibility for which is authorised in writing by both parties prior to continuing.

If you're just prepared to wait a couple of months then half price deals will be the norm, a few months after that you'll find all sorts of 4 for £20 deals or you can scrabble around in the bargain bin. The price of a movie is no reflection on the quality, in fact very often the converse is true as the drones tend not to buy intelligent films anyway. Any download price would have to compete with bargain bin prices to be even remotely viable in my eyes.

If everyone refused to pay the initial high prices for DVDs then the price would have to come down.

With the borg effectively out of the equation after Voyager finished I was expecting a trilogy of darker movies which would ultimately finish off the TNG crew in style. I've no longer got any interest in storing recorded programming on a long term basis so I don't have a DVD recorder. The PVR is far easier than any VCR I ever used. Find a programme in the guide and hit record, no VideoPlus(TM) numbers, no barcodes (yes I had a video which used those), no clock programming.

That's where the TAPs come in. I'm not saying it is perfect by any means but there are ways of gathering all the metadata. I use rt2mei which grabs the data from the Radio Times website. This includes things like genre and episode number and very long descriptions. If you have it connected to a computer via a serial cable I gather you can have it update automatically. Myself I copy the data over each week via USB.
It will only be a matter of time before something like MyStuff or JAGs (both TAPs to the uninitiated) can use this information to record programmes LIKE the ones you like watching.
Out of the box I admit the Topfield EPG leaves a lot to be desired but the expandability of the box makes it very tidy indeed. I recommend MyStuff.

Our Freeview digital broadcasts come with an EPG for free and I see no reason why all the clever stuff that Tivo provide can't go on at the box level, no suscription should be necessary.
I've got a Topfield 5800 PVR which has the ability to run applications (TAPs) downloaded from the interweb. They're generally open source and free and they are getting very close to offering the Tivo experience without the need for a subscription. Do you have this possibility in America?

I was waiting outside a supermarket the other week, in a parking slot, and one of these tossers shows up and stops in front of me to let out his passengers before moving into a space. The reason was obvious. His car was too damned big to get the doors open properly when it was between two other cars. As far as I'm concerned he should expect to have his bodywork smacked up by the car doors on either side of him.

I also always make a point of thanking people for waiting on narrow roads where parked cars make it impossible for two cars to pass eachother, unless they're driving something like a VW Touraeg. If it is possible for two normal cars to pass each other and your stupid truck sized car is making it impossible then it's your own fault and you'll get no thanks from me. If you drove a normal car you'd have had no reason to stop.
