If I had mod points I would mod you up. We face the exact same situation in health care. Extremely expensive, poorly written software that is intended for the exact same role in every hospital. An open source solution could cut costs, but more importantly history shows us open source solutions are of higher overall quality, and in health care accuracy, stability, and transparency are critical. I think all people working in IS/IT should be pushing open source all the time. We try but our main roadblock is that the big vendors are the safe choice for managers.

When the disk array has a hardware failure the Cluster goes down... When a node goes down, there are issues. Yes in a perfectly configured cluster, with perfectly written apps, managed by perfect admins, there can never be issues (because it's perfect) and that would apply to any O/S and hardware combo. But none of us live in a world like that do we? :)

  6. no Reboots? no hardware failures? on VAX Users See the Writing on the Wall · · Score: 1

Overly Romantic Tale of Nostalgia. 6 years? I doubt it. Ours gets more than monthly reboots, scheduled and unscheduled, and when hardware fails be prepared to pay through the nose for proprietary hardware and service. Doesn't matter what O/S is running, power supplies, hard drives, cd drives, fans, fail. Compaq issues (fairly) regular updates that require reboots. Vax's in production environments (applications that change, patches that are applied, hardware added) run into the same problems as any other server and operating system.

These new features solve a whole range of problems relating to data security as per new legislation/regulation. I work in Health Care in Canada and we must comply with certain criteria for handling certain types of data. One of the things we need is row level encryption... These features are more about meeting legislative requirements than enhancing overall system security. There is a disconnect between those making the regulations and the reality of implementation...

Get over it, IT jobs are very good jobs, If you think different you need try working in a trade for a while. 11. Satellite Signal on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

you need to properly mount the dish (so it will not move in the wind) and adjust for the maximum signal possible, this will reduce weather effects. However downpours (like multiple inches of rain/hour) or very heavy snow will block your signal. I live in southern Alberta (very windy - often 60 kph, peak 80-100) and have never had wind effect my dish signal (see note on proper mounting above)
