First off, why is such a worthless OS front page news on/.? SCO Unix is mediocre, and nobody would even think of using it. The only reason a SCO Unix review is on/. is because of the lawsuit hubbub.
The Flash tour is pretty snappy, but you can tell, it's nothing more than a glorified template driven website builder for newbies, similar to what Tripod and Geocities provide with their drag and drop stuff. It's probably even worse.
The best game soundtrack is definitely Halo. The launch menu, for example, is like a bunch of Tibetan monks doing their prayers or something. It's so serene, it's scary. And the in game music just pulls you into the game, chews you up, and spits you out. MS did a real sweet job of putting this together (Yes, I know MS bought Bungie software for this game). Here's a demo of the game if you want, 134 MB, PC only. You also need the latest version of DirectX (9.0b).
Problem is, how do we jam them? I'm not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination, but an EMP permanently disables an electronic device. Better watch where you're aiming that thing, so you don't hit a guy with an artificial heart!
Perhaps flooding the air with bogus data/static would work, but wouldn't that take up quite a bit of energy?
What about renaming them? MRI (Magnetic Reasonance Imaging) came from NRI (Nuclear RI), renamed because doctors thought patients might not like the word nuclear.
"As mentioned on Nova, my great-great-grandfather Amos Ives Root published the first eye witness account of the Wright Brothers flight almost 100 years ago.
And now you're a techie too, huh? Like father, like son, like grandson... Good for you.
Scientific American had rejected his article as 'unbelievable' and 'having no practical application'.
Too bad. Scientific American would have benefited hugely today if it just had printed the article... Imagine the commercials they could make...
The secretive Wright Brothers allowed Amos to publish the article in his own Gleanings Bee magazine instead.
Good. Did your grandfather get a lot of good publicity because of this?
Because of his objective account, other experimenters may not have received the credit they deserved.I wouldn't worry about it. It's in the past. Let it go.
I recently realized that Amos was intent on investigating the highest tech advances of the day and that the airplane was the most advanced phenomenon he could find. If Amos were alive today, what obscure technology would he be pursuing?"
Well, since it would be obscure, by definition, not a whole lot of people, including slashdotters, would know about it anyway. If I had to suggest something, perhaps biometric systems, nuclear systems, and any space tech.
With China the newest country to hurl a guy into space, and with NASA and Europe firing probes at Mars, space is definitely due for a resurgence. Just wait until Christmas, when the Beagle 2 is scheduled to touch down on Mars. If Iraq would just get off the news for a while, the media will definitely pick up on Mars and space coverage. The NASA probes (Spirit and Opportunity, or something close to them) are due to reach Mars soon after that, too. We're going to be deluged with data for the techies to drool over and lots of nice pictures for the masses. Definitely space tech.
Bush would want taiwan to fall, so he has a better reason to continue with his unfair tariffs and blocking of imports that force you to buy crappy american made goods while your dollar collapses and your economy fails.
But my point is, he CANNOT. If he does, his entire Iraq justification gets blasted through the window...
The west won't help because of china's nuclear threat.
What about our nukes? We can turn Beijing into a nuclear wasteland inside of an hour. You think Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bad? Todays weapons are a zillion times more powerful than 1940s tech. Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be a child falling down and crushing balsa wood when compared to a 100 megaton nuke falling into Beijing.
...And don't try to say you'll just shoot the missiles down... your best systems (the ABM system being tested in Alaska) can only hit missiles travelling at half speed, that put out homing signals to intentionally draw in your weapons.
I wasn't going to. The ABM system is a piece of crap. It's very hard to hit anything going at ICBM speed, and it's not anywhere near accurate.
China has shown for decades that having it's way is more important than the economic success of the country or the poverty levels of their people, economy wont stop them. The average person in China has such a low standard of living that they will see no difference, and they know that rioting will just get them killed (Remember Tienamin square 1988?)Who cares about the rural farmers? I'm talking about China's small but growing middle class, intellgentsia, etc. After feeling such a booming economy, working with computers, hell, even the factory workers, you really think they want to go back to their tiny farms in shitjing, China? no way.
He's already contradicted your theory by NOT dealing with North Korea to 'free the oppressed' there. oh wait, right, no oil in north korea.
Try also the fact that Seoul, capital of S Korea, is within artillery range of North Korea, along with the fact that China, Japan, and Russia are near there. We can't afford to fsck up there. But Taiwan is in the middle of a sea, where our navy can do some serious obliterating. China wants to nuke Taiwan? Forget it. The winds would just carry the fallout back to China, Japan, Russia, etc.
There won't be a war between China and Taiwan. Why?
1. US Popular Support For Taiwan. I don't care what the pessimists, Europeans, and US bashers out there say, the American people love the ideals of democracy, of freedom, etc. Being an American forces you to accept those ideals. Now, since the WMD is gone, Bush has justified the Iraq war as "helping the oppressed Iraqis". What about the Taiwanese? Aren't they going to be oppressed if China takes over? Damn straight they will. And Bush will be fscked, because even if he doesn't want war, his very actions doom him to this one action. There's a famous Latin phrase for this, but I forgot it. Anyone want to help me out?
2. Saber Rattling. China has been rattling it's saber at Taiwan for what? Years, decades even. And it's gotten old. I'll believe the Chinese are going to invade Taiwan when I see shitloads of Chinese troops boarding a cruiser...
3. Economic. China is a fscking Communist, if anyone's forgotten. It represses people. If China doesn't want to go into a recession, it won't invade. Guess what? If China invades, say goodbye to Chinese exports to Western nations. Goodbye to China's booming economy. And goodbye to general Chinese population happiness. China's people are tolerating the government because it's providing a growing standard of living (Although, speaking as a political scientist, it's unclear whether the Communist government can stay in power as capitalism, long a hallmark of Western democracies, booms). Anyway, when China's economy drops through the floor, what happens? Discontentment. Perhaps riots. Worst case scenario, China will need troops just to quell disturbances, etc.
4. Western Help. Come on. As listed in #1, we're going to go help the Taiwanese. Subs, missiles, ships, etc. I'd like to see the nonexistent Chinese Navy, full of Chinese Army troops, get to Taiwan when confronted by the US Seventh Fleet. Not to mention high altitude bomber attacks.
I'm a full blooded American, and I've always heard the second version of your story. It was always the wise king vs. the greedy/favor-grubbing courtiers. It was taught to me in elementary school, as a reason to always be truthful, so nobody could pull a similar trick...
Good thing I bought a Win 98 cd off ebay earlier this year, then. I bought a Compaq Armada, 300 mhz, 5 gig hd, 96 mb ram, etc, from ebay, allegedly just off a corporate lease program. It was in pretty good condition; just a few scratches on the LCD case, that type of thing. The armada came with it's hard drive completely wiped, so I got win 98. It's _rock_ _solid_. It runs perfectly, no problems (Hell, my new Dell laptop, Win XP sometimes slows down for no reason at all, even when on AC power, when the fan turns on. And yes, I've swept for spyware and viruses, and only use the Admin account when necessary). The laptop is rock solid. Even though I only use it for testing software, (I'm currently looking over OpenOffice) it's a very nice, efficient little thing.
The work of Elin Oxenhielm, the 22-year old Swedish student who apparently solved part of the 16th Hilbert problem, is coming under heavy fire from some prominent mathematicians, including her own adviser,
Well, the important thing is, she got her name mentioned on slashdot. That's gotta be good on your resume...;-)
That just means they're incompetent. They should have had the company's internal network separated from their "outside" network (ftp, web servers, etc). They knew they were going to be the targets of these attacks, why didn't they purchase more bandwidth? They're swimming in $50 million dollars from that Canadian bank, why not spend a million on their network? After all, they are SUPPOSED to be a software company, and you would think a software company with half a collective brain would be able to ride out a DDOS.
Oh well, SCO will be gone in less than a month, so we won't have to bother with this anymore...
Wouldn't it just be better if the whole thing was rewritten from scratch, or if you could adapt a program already available into what you need? I don't know how f***ed up your system is, but 10,000 lines isn't that much, especially if you take some preexisting code from sourceforge or somewhere and adapt it.
And why did this make front page/.? This is completely worthless. You're not sharing the actual file, not even an encrypted version of the actual file. This is more like a db of information about songs, wasting YOUR bandwidth. No thanks.
Yeah, the color is wretched, but that's the sickening color SCO uses, so I decided to use it. As for SCO suing me, I think they have enough troubles; I don't think they'll add it them by suing some college student.
The state law makes spam criminal in Virginia if any part of the spam transactions occur in any Virginia locality. Kilgore said the spam in these two cases was sent "through servers located in Virginia." Yes, the traffic only went through Virginia servers. The sender was in North Carolina, the recipients somewhere else. But this is a good thing. If spammers have to adhere to every law, then it gives them lots of problems...
Course, it'll be a moot point when the federal bill comes into play....
That r0xx0rs! A slashdot mod is pointing to my website! Awesomeness^3
LOL, SCO is shown to have an uptime of 37 days...
First off, why is such a worthless OS front page news on /.? SCO Unix is mediocre, and nobody would even think of using it. The only reason a SCO Unix review is on /. is because of the lawsuit hubbub.
I was poking through the SCO web site some time ago, to find good stuff for my SCO Report website and I discover SCObiz. Check it out. For $5,000, they'll basically give you a template site, with mediocre ecommerce ability. The datasheet is here (pdf), while the quick facts (pdf) is here. A Flash tour is here.
The Flash tour is pretty snappy, but you can tell, it's nothing more than a glorified template driven website builder for newbies, similar to what Tripod and Geocities provide with their drag and drop stuff. It's probably even worse.
Remember to visit SCO Report, where I do my part to annoy SCO with the truth, and SCO Countdown, where there are clocks counting down to SCO's demise...

We've previously mentioned this unique book
