Considering that the activation code has 5 alphabetic characters, I'd guess the process works something like:
Frame requests a page based on its MAC Server has no record, so it generates a new feed, creates a (random?) activation code, and logs this in its database User sees the message, enters the activation code online, which is retrieved from the db.
5 digits doesn't give many options. What happens if they all get used up when people start scanning and generating fake IDs? Will the database just fall over, and be unable to activate new frames at all?
Ok, now it's nasty - until now you could randomly initialise an inactive (possibly never real in the first place) account. Now it seems to can find the real accounts, and reset them into nastyness.
It seems you get an RSS feed with an activation code no matter what you enter for the frameid (it doesn't even seem to have to be a valid MAC address) so it seems they're not filtering on the server for addresses that actually belong to frames
Nooo! You just brought back the memories of OCP Art Studio on the speccy that I'd somehow managed to block!
Thankfully my parents took pity on me and bought me a copy of The Artist II on floppy (+3 baby!) which made my mouse adaptor birthday present actually useful!
Am I the only one that's noticed that the original article doesn't have a clue what it's talking about either, the "Motto" on Xbox live is quite different from your Gamertag.
Gamertag - username. Motto - user's signature.
The motto field has always been overzealous - e.g. I can't advertise my website, since "grapefruitopia" is considered to be inappropriate too - presumably because of the r-a-p-e in grapefruit.
Ok, I guess it probably blocks the same things with your Gamertag, but Microsoft actually charge you money (or rather gamerpoints) for the privilege of changing that (or you have to abandon your old account, and all your achievements and start a new one)

Personally as someone who's long developed Windows Win32/MFC code (in C++) and is now moving to C#.NET stuff, I'm finding.NET an absolute doddle.
let's face it - MFC and Win32 are old and have been cobbled together, seemingly at random over the lifespan of the whole Windows family, meaning nothing feels like it's ever really been designed
One function returns a colour, another function needs a colour. Oh dear, one uses some kind of int, the other a struct (oh and another some kind of class) - lets bog down our code with lots of conversion functions - Most of the time the sensible obvious approach to a task is the wrong one.
So far in.NET, whenever I've wanted to do something, I've looked at the classes, thought "How would it be sensible to do this", and 9 times out of 10 it works perfectly
Put it this way, it looks likely that the iTunes store will charge 99p for a song when it opens in the UK (0.99) even though 99cents = about 60p (depending on the exchange rate) - so it'll easy compete with that.
It's fairly typical for prices to get directly "ported over" when a US consumer stuff reaches the UK - such as a game console released in the US for $199 will end up being released in the UK months later for 199, which is roughly a third more in cost.
Dunno how much a cup of tea would cost (free in the office) but a can of coke costs about 55p, and 75p would get you one of the small bottles of the same drink
GTA3 pt1 = Liberty City (GTA3) GTA3 pt2 = Vice City (GTA:VC) GTA3 pt3 = San Andreas (GTA:SA)
since Vice City was basically just a rehash of GTA3 with a new city and a slightly updated engine, and I imagine GTA:SA will be a rehash of GTA:VC with a few more improvements
And as other people have said, GTA4 is meant to be a totally new game (whenever it appears), even though I've seen GTA:VC incorrectly referred to as GTA4

I've often thought it'd be cool if somebody took all the original radio recordings and used them to make an animated version (thinking adult anime, not cutsey kids cartoon)
Exactly - I've been looking at tablet PCs with great interest due to the whole "draw on screen" factor.
a article I was reading yesterday pointed out that whilst XP Tablet Edition doesn't support pressure sensitivity, there's an add-on by Wacom ("Penabled") that many oems are supporting it.
Sadly I've got an extreme lack of cash, so can't afford to buy any expensive gadgets right now, but when the time comes it's something I'll have a good think about. Also a big factor at the moment seems to be that local computer shops around me don't seem to have any interest in stocking tablets, so there isn't a chance for me to have a play with a demo machine.
Oh well, I guess by version 3 MS will actually have software that's workable (as is the usual MS way)
Also, out of interest, what's Linux support like for Wacom hardware? (I'm guessing the Penabled stuff would be pretty similar to the normal tablet drivers) - does Gimp handle pressure sensitivity? (showing my ignorance)
This is something I've been thinking of doing for a while - all you need is a minimal OS install on the laptop (enough to provide a graphical display and networking) and an app that'll do a continuous slideshow of the images in a given directory (either local or remote)
I've been using this screensaver on my Desktop PC (Windows, I'm ashamed to admit), which is a clone of the screensaver in OSX (does nice zooms and fades between your photos)
Then you just dismantle the laptop, fold it up so the keyboard can be hidden away (or removed entirely, if the machine can cope) and re-mount it in a nice frame
But that's the problem - Apple releases a new version of MacOS every year or so, which costs a not small amount to upgrade
Lots of new software releases only run on the latest version of MacOS so if you've got an old version, you're stuffed
Whereas most Windows apps still happily support Win98, so assuming the hardware is up to it, people using a 6 year old computer can still buy new apps and not worry about compatibility
Surely Apple itself, being the maker of the iPod was perfectly aware that old iPods are Mac-only, meaning that iTunes on Windows should just say "sorry, this iPod is not compatible with iTunes for Windows" rather than just ignoring that fact and breaking the thing.
When you install Windows iTunes it installs a background service for running the iPod, which sits there, using up memory and cpu time looking to see if you've got an iPod plugged in
What's the need of this for all the people who installed iTunes, but don't own an iPod? Surely there should be a seperate iPod service install (or install option in iTunes) that you run if you actually have an iPod
I disabled the service and it hasn't had any obvious effect on the operation of iTunes
Ahh, you right - the few I tried all seemed to be alphabetic only, which would've rather limited the pool
Considering that the activation code has 5 alphabetic characters, I'd guess the process works something like:

Massive product recall ahoy

He slashdotted himself...
using VS2005, that fails miserably in debug, but works fine in release.

Um, you do know GTAIV was made by a British studio, don't you?
You can run a mac emulator on the amiga, and Mame on the Mac, for an extra step
Something similar's been available for two or three years in the UK.

Not quite the same as mp3.com as it hosts mp3s of bands who are already signed, but I've found quite a few bands I'd never have heard of otherwise
