    I'm sure there is lots of abuse
    I've typed mom or dad and had my client not substitute the address, so this could happen by accident quite likely.

    Generally I use root@localhost, or the site (here I might use root@slashdot)

    I use galeon at home, but at work, I use IE.

    Yes google is great.
    However many people just use the default search option in their browser.
    I think specifically going to google to search is already above many users.

    When I use IE, I even tend to use the default search when the website isn't found.

    There are 3 main costs to spam
    Server - CPU/Storage
    Bandwidth
    User time to read/sort it

    User time is expensive.
    Bandwidth and servers are relatively cheap
    Email filtering saves the most valuable resource, this helps limit the damage of it. Nobody is saying this is the ideal case, but it is an effective tool.

    My one email account uses SA, but does not auto delete.
    Evolution just files those with high rankings into another folder.

    I don't think auto deleting emails is a good idea.

    Yahoo does a similar thing, throws suspect spam into a bulk folder. Quite often I find stuff (website registrations) in there.

    People shouldn't use computers they can't trust.
    Unless you control it you can't trust it.

    Am I expected to trust someones computer?
    Very easy to put in a keyboard, mouse, USB key sniffer in.

    If I can't trust my own computer running the 'standard' OS, how can I trust someone elses.

    People have finally gotten to understand they must keep their bank PIN number secret, they should be able to understand putting it into random computers is also a bad idea.

    don't care if you die a horrible death but you're costing me tax money
    Of your listed reason this is the only one that gives me any justification to put my views on others.

    In a free society, the only reasonable limits are on those issues that affect others. I don't consider looking at fat people invasive enough on me to justify limiting it.

    Lets be a little US centric, 400k is only about 1.5% of the popluation, I'm sure it is way higher. Just think of all the guys watching sports, or Dr Phil.

    I'm glad I've got slashdot to keep me away from TV.

    I just tend not to watch TV.
    The most offensive thing is that the shows suck. It's pretty bad that with all the 'first rate channels' my cable company gives me, I end up watching Pauly Shore movies.

    Much of the time the solar cells should be recharging batteries. Driving should use both the sun and the batteries to get better performance.

    The store knows there is no tape.
    So the cops come, you tell your (true) story.
    The salesman, another salesman, and the manager tell their (false) story.
    You are left with no proof. The best case is they believe you, the worst case is they believe the store. The middle case is you're all full of it, they go away and you wasted two hours, took a big risk, and still don't have the flipping TV.

    If you call the police you are elevating the situation. Then it becomes you against the employee, the coworker and the manager.
    You'll find out some of those cameras aren't taped (fun).
    If you try to sue, you won't get squat because you didn't minimize your damage.
    "The situation was getting hostile, and you didn't just leave to avoid it getting worse? WEll I really wanted the TV", it doesn't take Judge Judy to guess what happens next.

    Really did you need this TV so bad right now that you needed to put up with this crap? Why not pay a few bucks more and go to a reasonable merchant.

    Yes, but if you don't file the rebate almost immediately you won't get it at all.

    The companies bring this on themselves. I'd love to just have the store drop the price at the time of purchase.

    Come on the financial community is based on the better customer philosophy.

    Actually even good customers get better deals, you pay all your bills on time, and have a good credit rating, you pay less interest.
    My old ISP I told them to read my customer log and got transfered to the more senior techs, I'm sure someone else on slashdot has used this to get past the reboot clones.
    Many banks/advisors give different and improved service if you have 'at least XXX in investible assets."
    How going to a car dealership with a friend. One of you buy a nice expensive luxury car, the other a used economy car. Come back within the warranty period with a complaint about a rattle or something small, guess who gets better service.

    That being said I bought an economy car, but I get first rate service. Unfortunately I hear this is a rare experience.

    This is why you lock out the device when you are working on it.
    I find it hard to believe that such a dangerous piece of equipment doesn't have a lockout method.

    Every worker should have their own personal lock on a machine when they are working on it. They even make these funny looking multilock adapters that will allow you to have multiple padlocks on at the same time.

    You can't fight offshoring without causing the protectionist death spiral.
    If a US firm can't compete in an area, they must either become competative or get out.
    If the governement protects them it will result in higher costs for other US firms that depend on this. This will continue until all US firms are globally incompetative and the US is completely isolated.
    When the population at large gets their high standard of living from cheap imports, cutting them off will result in a significant lowering of the standard of living for most people.

    I disagree. I'm not in the computer industry.
    I'm a long time linux user at home, however I use NT at work.

    My friends and family use windows 2000 and XP. I can't figure it out. I spend a lot of my time asking them how to do the simplest of tasks, different applications have different default save locations. I don't know where the configuration files are.

    I like knowing that when I use an application it will save in ~
    The user specific configuration is in ~/.application.
    When I reinstall windows I am sure to forget some details like IE bookmarks, or other preferences buried around the computer in random locations.

    I know linux isn't the simplest easiest most straightforward OS. But once you learn it, it is really easy to use. Windows IMO works okay if you click around and hunt, but it has so many odd details to remember that it is a frustrating user experience if you haven't done something recently.

    The odd details in linuxland tend to be command line switches, which are typically documented in the man page. Where in the windows help system is the location of my IE, netscape or opera bookmarks documented?

    Well today in the US this is an issue.
    But if interest rates weren't so low you could get a decent rate from a money market account. Some banks call these high yield savings or something. Even at 2% this is a few bucks a month for nothing (you do have an emergency fund right?)

    I like to keep my bank balance as small as possible. Why keep it in a checking account?

    Also it is convenient to have up to date records of every purchase across all accounts and credit cards all in one place.

    Plus it reminds me what bills I have paid, and when. What outstanding checks haven't been cashed, and more detail on transactions.
    The aggregate data on how much I spend on gas, food etc is also useful.

    I used to do that.
    I've found Gnucash to be vastly superior.
    It easily tracks my expenses and account balances.
    To do that in a spreadsheet would be more complicated.
