Yeah but the neighbour got pretty pissed at what they did to his nice new deck.
I remember lawn darts being banned, but everyone I knew was careful because they could hurt you. Then we got these safety darts, and people stopped worring and got hurt MORE.
Kids do break bones running into each other. Some parents are very overprotective. Makes me think of the games we used to play, one was to line up holding hands and people would try to run through your line, I'm pretty sure a game like that is banned.
I don't know what it will take for people to realize that there is a problem with banning risky behaviour. As a child the penalty for misjudgements is a minor injury. Unfortunately we've turned into a society of not-my-fault and lawsuits.
I watch out when I approach a door because I know it will hurt if I get hit by it. I'm sure someone has sued when they weren't careful approaching a closed door.
You only "wreck" it by others opinions, or your own regret over making the wrong choice.
Living your life in a barely concious drug induced haze, or with a dedicated life of praying and worship, driven career oriented, or family focused. Deciding if these are wrecked is just a matter of opinion.
Each of these caricatures may think the others are the ones missing out and wrecking their lives.
If you want to spend your life playing warcraft, go ahead, just don't blame me or the game, or society for your decision.

Many marriages involve compromise. You picked nice steroetypical womens wants and IMO skipped over the basic issues.
Women (and men) tend to want some attention and time with their spouse. Guys might get more attached to career and video games, women might get spend more time on the kids or their career or friends.
In these cases the one spouse is pursuing their own interests without the other. This may cause some resentment which at least contributes to some relationship issues. It happens both ways for a variety of reasons.
The going out thing is simple, some people don't want to just sit around their house ALL the time. My last vacation I just went somewhere else to be away from the house and break out of the routine.
At what point does rude/antisocial behaviour become illegal? There is a line to be crossed, I think in this case harrassing at such a memorial is disgusting, and is close to the line of what should and should not be permitted. Inciting violence is never acceptable, since there was no context to imply that it wasn't a serious attempt I think it is unacceptable.
Protesting at abortion clinits, making some noise but leaving everyone else basically unaffected? Protesting the Iraq war and blocking the streets that my tax dollars paid for? Protesting the WTO and cause a riot resulting in damage and inconvenience to thousands of residents Protesting at funerals for Iraq war dead? Assassinating abortion doctors because you disagree with them?
Free speech is a very powerful tool, in fact one of the single most powerful tools available. It can be used in both good and bad ways, however overall in the long term it has resulted in a net positive.
We have laws to protect from violence and they should be enforced.
Harrassment is a bit more murky because you have to draw a line based on judgement, but again we DO punish for harrassment.
What is hate speech, is it merely an opinion, or is it outright lies, or is it promoting illegal activity.
If it's just an opinion I think, no matter how stupid, it should be permitted. If you're inciting violence it should not be permitted. Let me make some examples.
"We shouldn't let Americans give away money, because they give the most money to stuff shown on TV." (I think this is stupid you should be allowed to say it)
I don't like you because you're smelly (the first time it is rude, repeatedly it is harrassment)
Don't vote for Bush, he used the Michael Jackson dating service. (this is a lie, it should be permitted, however one should be held accountable for the resulting damage)
Kill the (identifiable ethnic group). This should not be permitted.
I think the goverment is wrong on this issue (This must always be allowed)
These type of "fear the indian call center" play really well because they hit such a high number of issues.
ID theft- scary, currently a nice hot issue.
Privacy - little recourse for violations,
Offshoring - They're stealing jobs!! Jobs people don't want. FWIW there are some larger call centers in various parts of North America that are growing.
Indian accents - some people have trouble with them.
Racism - Some people just don't like them even if we solve all the other issues.
This is just cheap shot journalism at an easy target that gets people upset. This same type of privacy violation can and does happen in every part of the first world.
Math is just a series of simple rules. When put together in the correct order something larger is created, just like a computer program. I have a natural aptitude for math and always found the little rules to "help" more confusing than beneficial (x100 to get a percentage confuses me, x100% makes perfect sense, maybe I'm crazy.)
None of it is hard at the level of doing it, just forming the picture/design/structure of the solution might not be immediately straightforward.
I think the best way to approach learning math is to find a problem you have trouble with, and learn the ideas behind solving it. I know people who started doing better in Calc when they threw away their silly picture filled BA Calculus book and used the "harder" one from the Math/Eng courses. (Guess the 2 colour graphs are intimidating)
In Ontario when you sell a house below market value (eg gift it to family) you pay tax as though you sold it at market value.
Of course we have a fucked up market value system where they decide how much your house is worth, forgetting that it's only really worth what someone will pay.
If the company can't find a reasonable way to reinvest the funds, they should give them to the owners. BRK.A has been quite successful at reinvesting internally. Some other companies pay out some and keep some earnings. Exxon pays out roughly 25% of their corporate profit, and reinvested the rest.
In Canada there is a whole class of investments (income trusts) that simply give ALL earnings back to the owners, with little reinvestment in the underlying business.
To be fair the tax treatment of dividends in the US was quite poor and encourage companies to avoid providing dividends. Add in the strategic advantage of a large cash reserve and it is understandable why a company will act like this.
The ESRB ratings are very clear. A single rating, plus a slightly more detailed description of the precise concerns. If they're not communicating with the parents, it's because the parents can't read, or don't want to. Lawmakers can't make parents become responsible by beating up on the ESRB or game industry.
I've seen the parents argue with the salesmen about buying age appropriate games for their kids. It really is disgusting to witness the reaction of some parents when someone dares suggest GTA may not be appropriate for their pre teen child. To be fair more parents seem to be appreciative that the salesmen point out the warning labels and age ratings.
People would rather blame than take responsiblity.
What can we blame for the lower per capita crime rates? Particularly when we consider some things weren't crimes, or weren't widely reported earlier.
Yes we have had graphic headline grasping crimes lately, but there has always been something. I'm sure there were pissed off kids taking swords or clubs to each other before they invented guns.
I don't want to suggest that researchers are unethical (most people, even scientists and lawyers are quite ethical IMO) but it isn't reasonable to assume someone will respond neutrally and unbiased about their own field of work. Much of our technology is due to the passion of the researchers, which clearly involves their own views and opinions.
Not surprisingly the arms race continues. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone that all countries continue military R&D. It hits the news that the US has Drones flying over and dropping bombs in Afghanistan, but it is somehow slashdot front page news that the Chinese are doing a high tech version of blinding a video camera with a flashlight?
What about the man portable observation drones, guided rockets and robots?
I would say our current use of fossil fuels is a HUGE amount of our current standard of living, everything from personal comfort, supporting this level of population and our extended lifespam. I don't think anyone wants or is willing to return to a sustinance existance with 30 year lifespans.
Second these changes might very well happen irrespective of our behaviour. Thirdly what is a catastrophy? Your prime beachfront condo is underwater? I don't care. Widespread famine? This is a reality for most people, the rest don't care.
Yeah but the neighbour got pretty pissed at what they did to his nice new deck.

You live the life you choose.
You only "wreck" it by others opinions, or your own regret over making the wrong choice.

Choose the one you like.
If you are considering the GPL, choose if you want v2 or v3.
Personally I think the GPLv3 creates more problems than it solves.

I don't care how stupid the owners are, it's their company if they want to run it into the ground they can.
The managers are simply employees there to run the company the best they can, at the owners discretion.
Same theory applies to small family run companies to large multinationals. It's the owners to do with as they please.
Those circles are probaly the "expert management" and not the shareholders.
I do want a say in how the companies I own stock in are run, part of that is I choose companies with good managment teams to do it for me.

Actually even minority shareholders have rights at least in the US.
Quite often there are lawsuits against the company or management for actions against the best interest of the shareholder.
I was just trying to clarify the regional meaning of mince and a possible logic.
It is quite common at least in some areas to have mincemeat with no meat. Here is the wikipedia link and relevant quote.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mincemeat
"Mincemeat containing actual meat has become less common over the years."
Yeah, the government should control everything, this will keep people happy.
Other than the fact that it doesn't work it's a great idea.
Simple, we just replace the government if electricity gets too expensive.
In Ontario Canada there is a massive debt with the electricity company because for years they've sold electricity far below cost.
The other question is why is your electricity so high? Simple answer is that you put up with it.
If the company can't find a reasonable way to reinvest the funds, they should give them to the owners.

Ground beef is often called Hamburger in North America. It is almost exclusively beef.
The formed disk is often called a hamburger patty. While "a hamburger" would be the sandwich.
The term mince is not used to my knowledge, and might cause confusion with mincemeat which has no meat.
The ESRB ratings are very clear.

You've got to be kidding.
The only reason they haven't totally failed is they are a legal monopoly.
Their customer service and satisfaction is horrible. Many people can't even figure out how to file their own taxes.
They can't even effectively get the money they're owed, they are outsourcing that to private collection agents.
The parents were held fully accountable for thier childs behaviour.
Personally I think their punishment was a little severe as one should not be punished for the behaviour for another.
The article suggests the kid killed his abusive parents. Unfortunate for the sister, but if she was older she should have stopped the abuse too.
I consider hitting a child because they aren't working fast enough ridiculous.
People would rather blame than take responsiblity.

Then you haven't been paying attention. To be fair it's a bit obscure and isn't a direct goal.
The reason there are so few diesel cars in North America is that it is difficult and expensive to make them meet the emissions requirements.
VW will suspend (likely temporarily) sales of their diesel cars because of these requirements.
Researchers are political too, and politics and dissemination of information is important.

Politicians do have a place in the plan.
