    It's endemic within the US military, not necessarily in every Allied military. Please don't group the two together. The US military has highly different values when it comes to the lives of civilians, compared to almost every other military out there.

    As I've already posted in this discussion, I wrote an HTTPMAIL->Gmail wrapper. Just add an extra HTTPMAIL account to your favourite email client, and you're done. Notification and email processing in your own client, cross-platform.

    I wrote an HTTPMAIL wrapper for Gmail, so your favourite HTTPMAIL client can access gmail accounts. Of course, that means notification is part of that app (and the same for all your mail accounts), and so not an issue. Damn I sound like a tool. "oh! look at me and my precious code!"

    The iPods kicked off because they were cross-platform. Even when they said "Macs only", they worked with Windows boxes fine. I used a first-generation iPod with my windows box, with no problems. The same goes for the iTunes music store. It was instantly available on windows PCs, so Macs didn't solely make it the success it was.

    After all, 3-4% of the market is still only 3-4% of the market, no matter how important you think it is. They can stay well away from it, and still capture over 95% of the market. It's not a bash at macs, just economics. The tables would be turned if macs were in the majority, you can count on that.

    I was obviously talking about large airports. I've flown out of Long Beach in LA, and it was no more than two tents next to a somewhat-flat piece of road. ;) They still couldn't get people through it quickly.

    Take a look at Heathrow. Massive, massive airport, hundreds of flights, and fast-moving people. The security procedures are more thorough, yet they don't terrorise the passengers. Makes you think, doesn't it?

    That's exactly why the system was put in place. It's another tool to fuck with, and control, people. I don't like where this is heading.

    It makes you wonder how the terrorists will next attack. If they use a car, are they going to ramp-up security for cars? What about if it's a container ship - are they going to blocade the ports?

    If the US government attacked the source of terrorism, and not the actual terrorists, the country (and world) would be a much safer place. Of course, to do that, they'd have to admit a tiny bit of blame, which they don't seem to want to do.

    It's like a plumber fixing a leak by putting buckets under the drips, instead of actually fixing the pipe. It'll only get worse.

    The check-in agent has to use the computer, and if the computer finds the person on the DNF list, the terminal is locked automatically, to stop just such a practice. The computer has the final say whether you fly, and it doesn't read the papers.

    Well, they still went through the metal detectors and their weapons weren't found, which is a much bigger failing than false documentation.

    Israel is a unique instance. Compare any US airport to a European one, and you'll see tighter security, yet faster-moving people. Go figure.

    He didn't say everyone in the line was non-white, but that most non-whites go through the list. I have to agree with him. I'm white and I've been through the extra-security rubbish (at LAX a few times), and it sucks. There definitely is racial profiling going on, which is just freakin' stupid, and illegal in the US. But then it's part of the war on terror, so most people forgive it.

    Not being funny here, but if you fart outside the whitehouse, it's a matter for the FBI.

    We're talking about a bunch of scientists living in a very, very inhospitable place, all cold and lonely. I'm sure they don't really want to be scouring /. asking for suggestions on securing their network. They use an intermittent satellite link - security is the least of their worries. A mass penguin uprising probably figured more likely :)

    Well, my good friend has a Mac and an iPod (2nd gen.). My wife and I both have iPods (1st, 2x3rd), and the batteries in all of those devices are rapidly deteriorating. The 3rd gen. iPods were worse than the 1st and 2nd, and I'll have to see how the new 4th gen we have in the office is fairing.

    It's not FUD, it's just something you haven't encountered before. Don't jump to conclusions like that, or people will think you're a fanboy. Just sayin'.

    Low bandwidth is no excuse, but intermittent bandwidth is. If the link is only open for a very brief period of time, you could very well waste all that time establishing an SSH connection or VPN. By the time you came to securely download your data, the link is already closed and won't be back up for ages.

    It's unsecured through necessity, not through choice.

    Are you KIDDING? The government flipped its lid when those gay people got married (due to religious reasons) - imagine what would happen if that game was released in the US? Of course there's nothing making it illegal on the books, but then it still be stopped somehow.

    There's a difference between banning the discussion of something, and banning the display of factually-misleading maps of disputed territories. Read some of the news from those areas, then tell me if it's called for or not.

    Give them some credit - I'm sure they actually thought about it. Sheesh. They're a bunch of ISPs. Not just one pokey little one with no clue, but many large ISPs. The police are pissed off with spammers just as much as anyone else, so investigating the spammer and the sites involved will be high on everyone's list.

    It will do something to those spammers - the ISPs can (and will) block the IP addresses. We're not talking about a citizen's action group here, but a collaboration of every major ISP in Britain.

    It's going to be investigated, not just automatically booted off their host by a postfix script who grepped the URL from an email... :)
