  1. Re:how, exactly on Texas Science Director Forced To Resign Over ID Statements · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's not as simple as you think when your own teachers don't believe in evolution. My high school biology teacher thought evolution was a bunch of bull-crap (he was careful not to say what his belief was). Sure, he taught the scientific method as outlined in his curriculum, but every time he got the chance he was bad-mouthing evolution. I don't think very many of his students came (come?) away with a good understanding of how to actually apply it. I think, mostly because he refused to apply it himself. The irony is that I was constantly sleeping through his class because I had finished reading the textbook in the first month of school. All the kids who were actually awake learned less than me because they listened to his propaganda.

Production costs can get ridiculous sometimes for big name bands. I remember reading that on Tool's last album (10,000 Days), there was $100,000 worth of recording equipment around Danny Carey's drum set; that doesn't include his actual instruments. That was more than the entire first album (Undertow) cost to produce.

I wonder how much different it would sound if recorded with less stratospherically expensive equipment...

Totally agree. I've never found a good use for it in any desktop environment I've used.

I've never run into a situation in which I've needed to see two things on top of each other. They just get mixed up and I can't concentrate on the top layer or use the information from the lower layer.

That just leaves eye-candy as a possible use. I only like eye-candy when it stays out of my way and doesn't try to do anything. Good example of eye-candy: drop shadows in OSX. They're pretty, but utterly useless. I like that. Translucency is somewhere in the middle, tries to be useful but only ends up being good as eye-candy. I hate that.

how this 'global citizen' concept is working out with the UN and the EU as they try to do something

Are you saying that the UN and EU haven't done anything to promote world peace? Or maybe you think it's better to just say it's impossible for nations to work things out peacefully. You think we should just disband all the various international organizations because war is inevitable, right? What's the point if there's always gonna be conflict, right?

I understand there will probably always be conflict. There is conflict at every level of humanity, from groups of nations down to sibling rivalry. That doesn't mean conflict has to result in bloodshed. We can learn to work things out peacefully, but a big part of that is a deep understanding that the people halfway across the globe are people just like you. They have sadness, pain, and joy. They have felt love, and felt anger. An understanding of their motives can help understand a path to peace.

As for saving American lives... why does it matter if their American? I'm for saving lives period. I've lived on the other side of the great divide. I've been in the military. I've since decided that it's wrong to think about being just an American citizen and defending this country. To truly move forward we must think of ourselves as global citizens and care for all people. It's when we divide ourselves into groups (American, Iraqi, etc...) that we forget to see the humanity in others.

What if you only want a single song from that album? If you buy the disk, it's NOT cheaper than buying the one song.

It's not like settling for a jpg of the Mona Lisa. It's like buying just the Mona Lisa jpg instead of a collection of artwork that includes the Mona Lisa. Maybe the rest of that artwork is crap.

Back to the album...maybe you don't want to go through the trouble of converting it yourself. Maybe you don't want to mess with CDs at all. There are plenty of reasons why it's a better choice to buy a single off an album rather than the entire album.

You asked what features it has that a sub-$100 phone doesn't have. I listed a few, that's all. I don't think any sub-$100 phones have any of those features, but as you pointed out it's a stupid comparison anyway.

My mom's HP broke down one too many times. She got fed up and bought a Mac at my suggestion. After playing with it for a couple of weeks, I knew I had to get one, too. So, when the latest Macbook Pros came out recently I snapped one up.

No one in my family had ever owned a Mac until 3 months ago. Now, we have an iMac, a Macbook (brother-in-law got one after seeing mine), and a Macbook Pro. My brother has decided his next pc will be an iMac, too.

It had little to do with Ipods. A couple of nieces have Ipods, but I was never terribly impressed with them. Instead, it's due to my using a Mac in a couple of classes at my university. I liked them, but wasn't sure about buying one until I saw my Mom's in action.

The question asked is how I would like to see Linux improved. I'm basically saying that I don't think the user should be expected to need to muck about. If they want to, no problem. Most distros of Linux almost demand it. OS X doesn't. Therefore, I like OS X more.

(yes, I know you can use the CLI in OS X, but you never have to unless you so desire) That's exactly how it should be. I don't think the CLI needs to be buried (nor do I suspect most people do, either). Right now, it's too in-your-face. That's why a lot of people like OS X. The OS gets out of your way and lets you get things done. The CLI is part of that. If you need to go mucking about in the guts, you can. Most people don't need or want to go mucking about, so it stays out of the way.

I think that's one of the biggest issues with Linux right now. It's designed on the premise that people need or want to go mucking about in the guts of the OS. Windows is designed on the premise that users are to stupid to do so. OS X is designed on the premise that people don't need or want to mess with the OS (but can if they so choose). For me, OS X wins...

I've been using Firefox as my main browser for at least 4 years now, but I only introduced it to my family about 1-2 years ago. NONE of them use tabs. No matter how many times I show them, they can't seem to remember to open new tabs. I don't think anyone but my brother even knows the browser history even exists, but he does use it when he needs to. Nobody but me has ever set a bookmark for anything in any browser on any computer in my family (except on accident). And the bookmarks that are there rarely get used. Everyone insists on just typing the address into the address bar.

It seems like the more options and tools they have, the less enjoyable the computing experience is for them...
