It really is things like these that make slackware stand out. This is what brings out the difference between windows and linux. Thank god for slackware, I dont have to use DedRat lindows or the like!!

Every once in a while slashdot comes up with a story that says things like "the distribution that just won't die" (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/07/01/13162 22&mode=nested), as if it should have died long ago!

I fail to understand why there is such an attitude against slackware.

It is a really good distribution. It is simple, it is smart, and it is up to date!

The only thing that is not present in slackware are things for which MS windows is (in)famous for). Fancy installs, dumb control pannels, etc.

Slackware is as close to unix you can get using linux. There are no fancy 'linuxconf' like security holes, and wverything works as advertised.

I use Slackware 8, and have switched to it AFTER trying Redhat 7.1 and Mandrake 8. Before this I was using Redhat for many years, and I regret the time I have wasted with it.

And oh yes, like MANY others, I started linux with slackware... back in the days of kernel 1.2!

No, sir... you are not the only one...
The main reason why I turned to linux from windows 95 (in about a week!) was because I found Linux to be more powerful and more 'dos like'.

Who can use the crappy windows explorer for anything more than renaming a file.

  6. DOS was good on MS DOS: A Eulogy · · Score: 5, Insightful

People keep complaining about DOS all the time... about autoexec.bat, config.sys, and what not. IMHO, DOS was and _is_ one of the best and cleanest operating systems to learn about the intel architecture. Where else can you issue BIOS interrupts, and play around with system memory? Linux doesnt let me do that unless I compile a kernel module, and what not.
Trey, DOS wasnt the best desktop/server/handheld Operating System, but it surely was a great learning experience for all who used and programmed for it.

I still use TurboC on DOS when I need to try out some small program, and dont want to wait for linux to load.

Another point, I dont think you can ever have a successful operating system without any command prompt. Copying and moving files can never be as easy using a dumb GUI file manager.

Well, the good news is that you can keep linux on a CF card! Work is in progress. :)

I really dont understand how the 3800 is better than the 3700. The has the same processor, the same memory (both flash and RAM). The only two differences I see are :

    - The SD slot. btw, did you know that SD means Secure Digital -- All the Secure media problems come with it. And, it would not work with linux because the specs are not available
    - Better display - 16 bit instead of 12 bit display. This is really not worth it unless all you want this for is watching movies. You wouldnt notice it in day to day use, and even in games.

I feel the 3700 seems a better bet right now, specially with X-scale to be released middle of 2002.

Slackware might be the best distribution around, but i dont think it is meant for newbies who dont even know what a command prompt looks like, and how to view a directory. Most of the people coming from the windows world dont even know about the existence of a shell prompt. You wouldnd ecpect them to modprobe their soundcard to get it to work. For such people i think mandrake is the best thing around. It is as close to win2k in ease of use as you can possibly get. Slackware might only drive away a potential linux user before he is able to understand the power and strength slackware has to offer.
