Ah, thats precisely the point! on my linux machine, I cant even open/view/listen to a MS formatted audio/video file, leave alone converting it to another format!

The problem is that once the format is closed inside MS, they can do whatever they want to with it. They increase their monopoly if DVDs start coming out in a Windows Media format that run only on windows XP !

  9. Re:So what's the big deal? on CD/DVD Manufacturers To Support Windows Media · · Score: 2, Troll

Why is MS so bad for thinking of this first?

Well, for the simple reason that Windows Media will continue to remain a properitary format, and we poor people who cant afford MS Windows XX, or who prefer to use alternate Operating Systems will be left in the dumps. Atleast Real comes with a Real audio player for linux. Apple is as bad as MS, btw. Properitary and closed!

  12. Re:Where are the Debian packages? on Quicktime Under Linux With MPlayer · · Score: 5, Informative

There are a few reasons behind that. Firstly, MPlayer has many options with regard to what kind of output it should use. These are bese selected during compilation.
Secondly, to be really useful, MPlayer requires several dlls, and codecs. These codecs either come from the windows dlls, or from closed source projects like the DivX(tm) MPEG-4 Codec.
Distribution of these is prevented by their license. There are just links to them on the mplayer page. It is best if you compile mplayer yourself.

Also, as a christmas gift, teach your mother the "./configure; make; make install" trick ;)

[shamelessly lifted from a post in a different article]
Quicktime is a wrapper format for a number of codecs, just like AVI. An actual Quicktime file is almost invariably encoded in the Sorenson file format, which is is exclusively licensed to Apple. MPlayer can probably never play this format!

Microsoft needs to change the visual appeal with each new version of Windows, because tahts the only thing that catches the user's attention. Its a pity you are comparing the 'eye candy' of every new release with the real work that is done in newer version of Gnome and KDE.

These people are programming a machine with a 200MHz RISC chip with 32Mbytes of memory. That isn't small, that's high-end desk-top performance of a few years ago.

    Not quite..
The problem with the iPaq is that it uses the StrongArm processor which lacks a floating point unit. So, all floating point calculations are to be done using a software emulator. This is where performance really sucks. You cant use any normal mpr player for instance. Try cross compiling mpg123 for the ipaq running linu ans you will know what I mean. You need special applications that make use of Fixed point arithmetic instead. madplay which is used as an audio player on the ipaq uses fixed point arithmetic, but the decoded quality isnt quite what you would get from mpg123.

This doesnt mean the idea is not good. It is a great idea for a notebook. A notebook without a keyboard... and the option for connection a standard keyboard. the keyboard is rarely used for web surfing, reading mail, and most day to day work. The only use of a keyboard is, well... coding. So, when you need the thing for coding, just carry a little keyboard along :)
