Someone had to do this!
Now it is only a matter of time before the others also have to come out with similar products. In the market economy, companies like Sony, Toshiba, etc. wont be able to survive when Phillips CD players have this extra feature.
I would love to hear what RIAA has to say about this;)
Please read the comment carefully before replying. I am not talking about quicktime here. I am talking about apple in general.
You are as dumb as you sound. Noone wants your uninformed fucking opinion, dumbass.
Please atleast DONT post anonymously if you want to rant someone! That shows that either you are too chichened to come out in the open, or just love your karma more than a healthy discussion. Either way, you lose your right to speak against someone else, when you are comitting the same crime that you are accusing them of.
hrm, please read my comment again. I am not talking about quicktime specifically. What I am talk about is Apple in general. Where is the OSX source? Does ANY application that apple comes out with come with source/linux version?
Look mate, I run Linux on my desktop, and unless a company provides me a linux version for its apps, or the source code/specs, it belongs to the enemy camp!
I can import, edit and export video in ANY format I choose on my Windows XP machine.
Ah, thats precisely the point! on my linux machine, I cant even open/view/listen to a MS formatted audio/video file, leave alone converting it to another format!
The problem is that once the format is closed inside MS, they can do whatever they want to with it. They increase their monopoly if DVDs start coming out in a Windows Media format that run only on windows XP !
Well, for the simple reason that Windows Media will continue to remain a properitary format, and we poor people who cant afford MS Windows XX, or who prefer to use alternate Operating Systems will be left in the dumps. Atleast Real comes with a Real audio player for linux. Apple is as bad as MS, btw. Properitary and closed!
Okay, so what happens if I happen to be in that 5% of the net? 95% of the net is cut off for me? Is this the case, or have I made a mistake in understanding it?
There are a few reasons behind that. Firstly, MPlayer has many options with regard to what kind of output it should use. These are bese selected during compilation.
Secondly, to be really useful, MPlayer requires several dlls, and codecs. These codecs either come from the windows dlls, or from closed source projects like the DivX(tm) MPEG-4 Codec.
Distribution of these is prevented by their license. There are just links to them on the mplayer page. It is best if you compile mplayer yourself.
Also, as a christmas gift, teach your mother the "./configure; make; make install" trick;)
[shamelessly lifted from a post in a different article]
Quicktime is a wrapper format for a number of codecs, just like AVI. An actual Quicktime file is almost invariably encoded in the Sorenson file format, which is is exclusively licensed to Apple. MPlayer can probably never play this format!

What is wrong with the GUI elements of KDE 2.2? And why should they be changed in 3.0?
Microsoft needs to change the visual appeal with each new version of Windows, because tahts the only thing that catches the user's attention. Its a pity you are comparing the 'eye candy' of every new release with the real work that is done in newer version of Gnome and KDE.
Well, yes 2.4 _is_ a good idea. Infact the familiar distribution for the ipaq has 2.4 for as long as I can remember!
2.4 has several features like enhanced USB etc. that make it better suited. Besides, most of the work for the strongarm processor is now neing done on 2.4... no point playing around with anything older!
These people are programming a machine with a 200MHz RISC chip with 32Mbytes of memory. That isn't small, that's high-end desk-top performance of a few years ago.
Not quite..
The problem with the iPaq is that it uses the StrongArm processor which lacks a floating point unit. So, all floating point calculations are to be done using a software emulator. This is where performance really sucks. You cant use any normal mpr player for instance. Try cross compiling mpg123 for the ipaq running linu ans you will know what I mean. You need special applications that make use of Fixed point arithmetic instead. madplay which is used as an audio player on the ipaq uses fixed point arithmetic, but the decoded quality isnt quite what you would get from mpg123.
How is this different from a notebook?

Thys would be a good description of a dream notebook.. not a handheld.
I would like a handheld that I can keep in my
pocket, and carry in my backpack easily. I dont really care much for the screen size. An A4 size is not really practical, and a smaller size would be suitable for must purposes.
This doesnt mean the idea is not good. It is a great idea for a notebook. A notebook without a keyboard... and the option for connection a standard keyboard. the keyboard is rarely used for web surfing, reading mail, and most day to day work. The only use of a keyboard is, well... coding. So, when you need the thing for coding, just carry a little keyboard along:)
I am unable to get kazaa to work for the past day or so. I get the following error :
Error logging into Kazaa, continuing as anonymous.
I am using the linux client. Is it only me, or are others also having difficulty logging onto the network?
i go the shirt at the sco/caldera conference. It is black, with "Got Linux?" written in bold white in the fornt, and "Get Kylix" written at the back.
You may now all resume using Kylix and/or JBuilder.

WOW... now i can start wearing my kylix/borland t-shirt again... I really liked it

Oates said he uses his computer for games, and that the computer discs police found were blanks used to record music.
Why would he say so unless the disks really were blank? IANAL but saying a lie wont help him. Is there something else fishy here?
