Gnome is really nice in this matter. Not even IM windows (I'm using skype) can't steal the focus. They just blink in the taskbar. Open source can do things really nice sometimes, and Ubuntu and its components is one of those examples.
Internet scared the shit out of everyone by moving things too fast for us to get adapted. It's just rezistance to changes. We'll keep pushing things forward, they'll push back, in the end it's gonna be our way (assuming that we're pro violent games. I personally don't care). That's the way progress goes, and the Internet is just Pandora's box.
I'd hate to be that virtualized human that you're talking about. Virtualizing the human body 100%, would it also make possible cognitive processes and thought? Interesting dilema.
Still, for an app that uses the gnome skin (yeah, GTK) and is "part of the gnome desktop", Firefox still has a lot to work on integration. Now, compare that with Konqueror...:-)
What about a distributed, p2p dns system? Would suck, of course, if you can't control the validity of a response:-) and it seems imposible to me to do that, but I'll leave finding a solution as a mental exercise to the readers.
This are about the same reason I've switched almost completely a month ago. Windows was starting to really piss me off. Memory management was bad. I'm working with Poseidon, and it's a memory hog. Windows deals with it really bad, and, in general, it deals with long running processes really bad. It tends to swap everything, just to have more "physical memory available". I don't want that available, I want it used, that's why I bought 1gb of RAM.
Now I've switched to ubuntu hoary and then breezy. I can't believe how good it is. Poseidon wakes up in a second when I return in the morning, it has more eye candy than windows (put a nice blue gradient in the background, gartoon icons stretched on the desktop, xcompmgr for shadows, etc), it has more features (virtual desktops, configurable shortcut keys, network integration - not as good as KDE's, but it works), and, in general, a really nice and tight desktop. I've been a KDE fan, but I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a gnome full time user right now. I use jEdit and Quanta for programming, Firefox for browsing and web development, I got IExplore installed using some script from the web, so now I can test in IE, so I'm a happy boy.
Only reason that right now I'm in windows is that Photoshop CS2 doesn't work well under wine (some window management issues). So, applications matter, but for my job, programming and some web development (except graphics), Ubuntu beats windows hands down.
I have a feeling that all this "complexity" that they're talking about has nothing to do with the backend and has everything to do with the user front-end. They should have hired some good workflow and interface designers as well, not just expensive consultants.
In the begining, God created man In the begining, there were primordial gases that took a long path to chemical processes that resulted in living organisms and through evolution, human beings.
And btw, we're genetically close to every mamal and organism on this planet, not just the apes. And since it's possible to transfer blood from human to apes and viceversa, we're even closer to them. But yeah, don't let logic cloud your beliefs.
I've only tried the webmail, but the interface was horific. Even if I could get along with the (possibly) broken css that didn't display properly in FF, it's still a second hand app when it comes to actually working with it, in terms of workflow and features.
Python encourages good programming practices. Among other, indentation, always document, short code modules, and best of all DO NOT EMBED CODE IN WEB TEMPLATES! Take a look at ZPT (and possibly Kid) if you need to understand why you shouldn't do that. (they succesfully survive round tripping through HTML visual editing, generate only valid html, etc.)
As a Romanian, I can tell you that the government here took action imediately. I can't say the same thing about the Republic of Moldova, where I heard they had a few villages where chicken were dying by the hundreds, in a single day, and the officials did just about nothing.
I've seen the movie. Hollywood crap. Is that how security really works with US airport?

Since when we're glad that a major Unix developing company is killing a major Linux company? I believe somebody forgot to send me the memo

wxMusik (open source), the best in my book, iTunes for Windows.
If you want to justify your move to Apple, try something else.
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Hell, yes.
Start trying one of the recent linux distros, they're very good. I'm using Ubuntu, if that helps.

(Typing this in firefox 1.0.7 on ubuntu breezy)
Linux seems pretty stable with a lot of hardware and I might say, out of the, has hardware drivers for most of the stuff out there.
You need to be a genius to figgure out that it doesn't take much to move a mirror in Korea and use their "humoungous" pipes?
Electrical Engineers do it with greater frequency.
Have fun parsing what I've just said.

Shouldn't that be www.we-surrender-the-internet-to-you.fr.com.nyud.n et:8090 ?
Switch to freenode and join the specific channel that you need.

On slashdot, only the anonymous coward reads the article. Us, cowboys, will head straight to the arena for a quick round of trolling and fighting.
First you fail to create a good link, and then that link goes to a login screen? Your link posting rights have been removed.

Some <> is missing from my post

writing with one hands is tougher than it seems, right? :-)

Haha, "We are going to get hit first"
Hey, thanks for counting us, those with the virus already in our countries, in your equation.
