  1. Tax and then sue you on Canadian Music Industry Wants Royalties on Net Usage · · Score: 2, Interesting
So even if people end up having to pay a tax on the internet... what difference will that make to the copyright law already on the copyrighted digital files out there? By the sound of it, it won't change a damn thing! The labels could just as well tax you and then sue you for copyright infringment! What are they promising here? That if you pay a tax, they won't sue? Do we trust them that much? Come on!

Personally, I would quite happily pay a premium if they repeal all copyright law as well... but we know this probably isn't going to happen.

At the moment, this seems like another excuse for the labels to grab money from somewhere.

No kidding it's easy for me to go chase after rpms from distributors and write scripts... but you have to keep in mind that both of us how to do all this stuff after years of study and experience.

Most other computer users just want to install the damn program and be done with it... and quite frankly, in Linux there's no point-and-click solution that will work across the board on every possible distro you care to mention. When someone downloads a package for "Linux" it should work on any Linux distro out there, similar to the way which "Windows" software works (excluding win9x/NT incompatibilities) across the board.

....And it's a real cop-out to force the user to use the command line, and get the kind of education we have in order to do this.

  10. Re:UserUtopia? on What Might UserLinux Look Like? · · Score: 5, Interesting
I think there needs to be more unification and simplification over the way things are installed in , not only Linux, but the BSDs as well.

I think everyone agrees that rpms suck. Most of the good code comes in source tarballs - configurable for any *nix... but this is where the user experience falls apart. What person is going to want to dig out the command line to compile source code, and will he or she know about all the ocnfigure options... and then, will there be dependency issues (or should the source contain the dependencies too?). Then there are the legal issues of bundling dependancies... and then there will be future commercial Linux apps which won't want to include source code.

In an ideal world, packaged installs will be a compressed single file, containing all source code, configurable on any *nix like normal source code EXCEPT that now there's a graphical interface so that setting compile options, creating desktop shortcuts, and "Make clean, make install, make uninstall" now all work under X with a point-and-click.

PLEASE! Will someone serious about standardizing Linux installs do something about this... or desktop Linux will never take off.

The RIAA etc. are cautious of MS as much as the OSS people. The RIAA etc want to avoid vendor lock-in with the distribution of their music, afraid of what MS would do with it. Yet, there is no open source project who in their right mind who would even bother making an open standards DRM for no reward - thus defeating the purpose.

I am surprised that MS hasn't jumped on the bandwagon yet... but I know their strategy will be to buy out whoever wins the on-line music war... cause we all know MS can't innovate for poo-poo. (despite how much their marketing division deliberately overuse the word)

HOME users should stick with Windows for the time being. I honestly wouldn't want to thrust my mother into compiling xMule and the associated libraries, or readying the usb-storage module for a USB flash memory card to work. What Linux needs for home use is a DECENT, SECURE INSTALLATION SYSTEM. Rpm doesn't cut it, and you can't expect average users to do the configure, make, make install dance. There needs to be some kind of X based installation/uninstallation system, which can also be locked so that certain users can't install their own programs.

When in a company, DIFFERENT STORY. If you have a decent IT admin, he can custom build a OSS desktop for use by company employees. Linux us already prepared for Office work, and it's cheap too. Really, there's no reason why Windows should be on company desktop. It costs money, and is a security nightmare... especially if all you want to do is run Word or Excel. Never mind that it's too easy for users to install other apps on the desktops.
