  1. And in other news... on Fedora Core 1 Released · · Score: 1
The FreeBSD people put out a stable production release of FreeBSD 4.9 only last month. So if you work in a company like mine where we try and avoid spending money as much as possible on new software, you'll probably be making the switch right about now.

Fedora can't be bad... as a community project with corporate backing, this is a great way for any good OSS developments to gain approval of the mainstream.

Why didn't RedHat give Lindows a plug at least? At least they've actually tried to make a decent competitor to Windows.

  10. Annoyed with Red Hat on Linux Users Try FreeBSD 5, Windows · · Score: 1
I'm considering the switch to using FreeBSD because Red Hat 9 seems to have a few niggling issues... such as with its scripts and also with some strange niggles in the kernel which causes some memory leaks with certain apps. I've even managed to crash the whole system by overloading the X server and causing it to spit a huge log file out that filled the whole disk, making a reboot of the system crash... yeck.

Don't get me wrong, Red Hat is great and their enterprise editions are probably more stable. BUT, in the office we want the servers as stable as can be, and so there is BSD. I'm downloading FreeBSD 5.1 now, and if I like it, I may stick with it.

Linux has a way to go yet. Until there is more stability and conformity on certain issues, and the average user doesn't have to break out the command line and recompile the kernel to get something working... THEN Linux will rule the desktop AND the server.

  11. OS overhead on Hard Drive Capacity Confusion, Lucidly Explained · · Score: 1

I would have thought OS overhead (file tables, directory structuers) would have been the deciding factor. I mean, the 3.5" floppy can only get as far as 1.4MB in windows, but I know of other devices that format the exact same disk to get up to 1.6MB of space out of a single floppy. In fact, I remember that a 3.5" floppy drive for the Commodore 64 did exactly that.

My first reaction to this is that here is Microsoft trying to stem the tide against the proposed OS that China, Japan, and Korea are thinking about.

In Japan, Microsoft has a fair bit of prestige... unlike, say, in Europe or the US where MS's reputation is sullied by the anti-trust suits. The Japanese, IMO, don't really think that the general public minds MS dominance... but then the Japanese wouldn't say openly that they hate MS or anything. Plus most IT workers would be thrilled to work for MS Japan... they have lots of cash after all. There seems to be no debate here about "which OS is better" like there is in other western countries.
