  1. What about the cost of the computers? on Message in a Battle · · Score: 1

Is it just me or did that article ignore the cost of the massive number of computers they needed to acheive those special effects? I know that they spent tens of millions of dollars just on the renderwall for the Lord of the Rings movies. I realize that it cost about that much to hire extras, but there is a bit more to pay for than "just two technicians in a computer bunker."

His point was that it doesn't whether or not piracy caused music sales because there is a positive correlation between the two and listed the possible explanations for correlation between the two events. "If free music causes people NOT to buy music," sales wouldn't increase with higher piracy.

  4. Re:Signal Jamming? on We're Jammin', Hope You Like Jammin' Too · · Score: 1

Good catch. It seems to me that turning off the cameras would be a pretty difficult task, wouldn't it? I mean there are many different types of cameras that they would have to block. Would this be something that physically disables the camera or a signal that tells the cell phone to disable the camera or something else?

  5. Signal Jamming? on We're Jammin', Hope You Like Jammin' Too · · Score: 5, Insightful

What? Wouldn't blocking the cell phone signal only prevent the person from sending the picture off? The photograph could still be taken and simply sent later, once the cell phone is away from the jamming signal, right?

Exactly. LaunchBar is a great substitute for mousing around in the Finder. I don't really even need to use the Finder much. You just type command-space and some abbreviation of the name of what you want like T for Terminal or IT for iTunes and hit return. If you hate navigating through the Finder, you should definitely check it out.

Actually, it's currently being done by Apollo Diamonds and Gemesis, which was mentioned above. De Beers is fighting them as hard as they can, but even if they convince the public that manmade diamonds aren't worth anything as jewelry, they will still be able to use them for computing. However, production is not quite ready for large-scale chip manufacturing, which is why Intel and others have not yet turned to diamonds.

  10. Re:Hmm... on Google Rebuffs Microsoft Takeover Bid · · Score: 1

Google only plans to sell $2 billion worth of shares, which is not nearly enough for Microsoft to try a hostile takeover, even if Uncle Bill bought every last share. Google's just selling enough to expand, not anywhere near enough to lose control of their company.

  13. Controlling for Occupation on Tall People Earn More · · Score: 0

The news article says that gender, age and weight were controlled, but not occupation. It would be much more relevant if the study was controlled and divided up according to field of employment. This could easily skew the results. The study mentions professional basketball, but it was not controlled out. As you know, taller people are more likely to play in the NBA, and NBA players make a lot of money. Therefore, a taller person is more likely to make more money if they play basketball for a living. However, since this is averaged in with all other fields of employment, it can make it appear that a taller person is more likely to make more money as a doctor, which is not necessarily true or false and definitely not relevant to the observation of the NBA player. The study (or at least the portion of the study that the article has reported) does not give us enough data for us to conclude that there is causation. The amount per year average can be slightly misleading, as the amount of time spent working was also not controlled. For example, this is the flaw in the often quoted "75 cents to the dollar" figure for the amount of money women make. Perhaps taller people tend to work more. We don't know because the study did not control for this. Also, it would also be very useful if we were given the standard deviation.
