Well you can do it for free. All you need is a linux box, a dsl line, some open source software like Apache and WebDAV and voila, Free iDisk/LiveDisk for all.. Conjure up a ssl cert so it's free from prying eyes and Tux' your uncle!
Of course for the mainstream bo bo this is all chinese and that's why some ISP's offer the service, in Europe, XS4all has it:
http://www.xs4all.nl/allediensten/experimenteel/we bdisk.php
But my domain hoster charges me to change the NS records... of course this may lead to the development of something different altogether.. an opensource and free domain registrar. My current registrar allows me to change everything but the NS records (A,AAA,CNAME,MX) myself at no charge (except the few bucks anually) but of course this service could be provided by a community supported organization, goodness gracious that would put a dent in the usage statistics, Mr Perens! It might stop some of the more irritating aspects of domain parking and that would in itself be a great boon for the internet as a whole. It could work..
I remember I once baked a PII 333 by running the setiathome number cruncher in three instances and then nicing them to -19.. it took about three hours before the chip ceased to function.
And this really is interesting because there are countries with laws that state if you buy something, it's yours and hence you should receive such things as master keys. Sort of analogous to sim-locking on phones. If I have purchased and paid (a fair price) for my phone, they must unlock my phone and give me pin,pin2, puk and puk2 codes. Perhaps some jurisprudence on this level will prove helpful in countries with proper consumer protection laws. For those who are stuck in evil-land I can only assume you shoudl vote with you wallet and write to your representative...
Having just called the local Apple Center in my town to ask about a Superdrive replacement to my MacMini all I got was "that will cost 500-600 Euro", appalled I replied that I would be better off buying a new one, the reply "that's the way we like it"... some service buddy...
I like the product but the retailers (in EU) have to learn that this is not the way to keep me coming. For what it's worth, I just ordered the damn drive myself online for significantly less and will end up installing it myself. I hope an Apple (EU) rep will read this thread and get the message. This is the last time I am fixing it myself. I am perfectly happy to switch back to *nix systems that I service myself, if the supposed convenience of Apple fails me, I will.
I don't think state imposed barriers are a problem for french users to use iTunes shops in other coutnries, it is Apple that bars access outside your country. As for them pulling the iPod out of France, I doubt it, they will fight it in the courts and take it to European level to get the EU institutions to take a stand, this may in the end of course backfire on them but it is a road they will have to take.
Elilo is probably your best bet. It does Linux on macs and there is no reason I can think of why you should be able to boot another os with it. I will have to wait to figure it out cuz the macbooks are in horribly short supply in my neck of the woods..
Well then perhaps Slashdot should give Steve-o a call and offer to run the test? I am sure the bandwith would be reasonable for/. and it would be a great publicity stunt, Iwould nt be surprised if Jonathan Schwartz at SUN would retaliate by giving/. one of their boxes to test...
Well I won't cry... I used to frequent the movies alot but the last few years I must say that Hollywood hasn't made all that much good stuff.. I mean films just don't have the calibre they used to. Perhaps the audience is no longer what it was but heck.. indie movies are indeed the way to go. (and for those of you not aware, an indie movie is not bollywood but independant)
I am perplexed. Unless the copyright owner registers a complaint why on earth would the police do anything? My car has been broken into, radio stolen and even after I registered a complaint the cops wouldn't do anything! Someone downloads mozilla and burns it on rom for someone to buy for a few bob and the police show up????? YO COPS GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND GET REAL CROOKS!
Finally the world realizes that burning things ain't healthy.. we are only about 30 years to late but heck... Maybe a bit of education and people won't fear "nucular reactions"...
as my high school physics teacher used to say, fission is fun!
Or "just say no" and explore the world of non-drm music such the likes of creative commons labels like magnatune...
Failing that lets buy all the 8-tracks on Ebay and hoock up the rca jacks to our ipods and copy the music the ol' fashion way.. Yeeeehaaaaaa! Then we can listen to 'em a rootin tootin in the gen'l lee all 'round hazard county!! now where's Daisy.....
Google for democracy on the CN google!! Shite man! The only entries are official chinese and any article dealing with failures of democracy! Google has become an accomplice to a crime against humanity in my not-so-humble opinion!
I would've been had he popped in a macmini! I can just imagine walking downtown with this thing, at least you wouldn't get mugged for your iPod, you could pack a whallop with that thing!
That is an interesting point, however tehy may have more concerns with regards to propietary bits in the code, they do like patents and the such like..
Furthermore, why would anyone be interested in IE, MS has acquired Opera so that is the reference platform for the (MS) future. All the rest need simply go firefox.
And despite it's being a nifty little browser I wish safari would go away.
Why does the Secret Service have to get involved? The President's family pictures involved? Chelsea Clinton did a bad bad??
I thought this was a felony offence for the FBI and the DA to sort out.. I'll never understand Law Enforcement post Department of Homeworld Lament...
YES!

Those are great options but I have localized domains in europe and the registrars for our tld's ain't that hip and with it..
