you wouldn't happen to have figured out how to get linux to boot from a firewire drive would you?
I have been scouring the internet for weeks and have yet to find a conclusive answer, apart from ydl payware.
And alot of it is really good. It's just that these artists don't get MTV coverage..
This being said, www.magnatune.com has a great collection. So pop on over and check it out.
John Buckman has been working pretty ahrd at getting artists onboard and he's done a great job. I am sure he's been covered on/. before but everytime I see this RIAA crap I am reminded by the magnatune motto...
It's like the drug trade. People want it, the more difficult (expensive) you make it to get, the more creative and inventive folks get at it.
How would you stop the criminal side of the trade? For example, with marihuana, many have said that de-criminalising personal usage and growing of limited amounts would lead to less money made by the criminals, less crime.
If by the same token, copyright owners would (use modern technology) lower the costs then piracy would not be profitable and people would be less inclined to entertain the criminal market.
If cd's would drop from 26 Euro to about 10 euro I think that piracy would end in Europe. Not the I copy my buddies cd piracy but the I make 150 copies and sell them in the street kind. The buddy system has always existed and in most places is considered fair use. Heck even drm-iTunes allows me to share my music with my buddy...
So the analogy with the farmer should be that the vagrant take his fill and not fill the chevy...
I guess the choice is much like education. Would you want a degree from an institution that does no research and doesn't have any publications out there or would you want a degree from a research oriented place with papers being published and controllable results? I like open source because I am an academic, it just rhymes better with the way we work and live. For this reason, I like Mozilla/Firefox. It is auditable, reproducible and they don't make a secret about what they ahve found in the process of making it work.
Other than that, I guess you could say I don't like monopolistic-corporate america, yeah, they don't rhyme with how this homey plays either...
You sound just like a little kid arguing with the neighbor kid over who's faster, Superman or The Flash.
this seems to be behaviour inherrent to mankind... amiga vs. atari, bmw vs. mercedes, linux vs. windows, cowboys vs. indians......
The best reason to have an AV for *nix is indeed to have a safe box on your Dowz(tm) network from which you can scan and control the zombification.
With this step, they effectivly destroyed a reasonably good platform from which companies were doing this. It is anticompetitive behaviour and it don't matter one hoot because there will always be alternatives. The REAL Problem is that Microsoft is actually patenting and acquiring patents to virus methods. This makes the usage of virus definitions for other companies problematic, clearly with the intent of cornering the market and targeting a specific group of users.
Just like the pharmaceutical industry where strains of bugs become "intellectual property", virus definitions and methods are becoming the "next big thing" for Mickeyshaft and consorts. As M$ is spreading the word about their entrance into the virus sphere, you better bet that every little av/fw software company is doings its best to expand its "intellectual property" portfolio, grooming themselves to be acquired.
This is the next big thing, this is the "killer app" for the last half of the decade and this is the most direct threat to users at large, across all platforms, so for frying fritters sake, I hope the DoJ isn't sleeping....
Go ahead and get the mac. Neoffice works quite well, has done for some time. Only if your work is centered on MS VB stuff or really heavy duty excel sheets are you in a pickle. Don't forget that if word compatibilty is your main issue then you can also go for Abiword
De Raadt isn't all to about getting your PC going. He is a hardcore dude who gets a hard on playing with OpenBSD on SUN and other esoteric machines. I doubt he actually uses a "pc". His codong is great and alot BSD thingys wouldn't be running on weird machines without him. He is a whacko, that's why they threw him out the door at NetBSD.
Fat Man was 21 kt yield as I recall.. The fireball ascended into the wind and fallout was not over ground zero. The black rain fell over Nishiyama, to the east.
There is still some residual radiation but surpisingly, the vast majority of radioactive fall-out pollution in the region is due to US atmospheric testing in the 50's, and that was way off in the Pacific!
The neutron radiation is also negligable compared to the background pollution.
I would have at least tried to smack me down with this great speech by Amalia Rubin.
LOL!
good link!
ah you wouldn't want me to smack you.. that wouldn't be nice..
Happy to see that you are capable of showing a bit more nuance in your posts. And of course, the internet is full of different quality source, and yes the truth is never as black and white as the loudest proponents of an issue make it. And yes FreeTibet is very one sided. I agree, the peasants in many parts of Tibet probably are better off today than 50 years ago, but that doesn't justify the wrongdoings of Beijing. I like the FreeTibet folks because they DO take a stand for the autochtonous culture of Tibet, who else will do this? I do think that there is a right for the Tibetan culture and ways to exist and resist 21st century China, as much of a right as have (what's left of) the Moken, the australian aboriginals, the Xhosa, the Tuareg, the native american, and the southern bavarians (joke)...
However, simply blaming Bush for the Uighurs is nto the full story. Islam and Beijings conflict are deeper than this. Beijing is in my view truly paranoid of anything that can motivate people. Religion is their number one fear and I feel they will stop at nothing to crush it. This is wrong, any which way you look at it.
I am not religious either but I will defend the next mans right to be so, as I expect him to defend my right not to be.
None of those links really talked at all about Tibet
this was nested under your history of china in the 20th century in general post..
Okay so you're a communist...
have a nice day.
As for going to Tibet, sure, when it's a free country. You really think it is all propaganda? Seriously check out some writings by a-political authors, try Joe Simpson on for size, he's a world class mountaineer and a great writer to boot. His perspectives on Tibet are not clouded by politics but by experience in the region from the 70's till 90's.
Go and have a look at your local UIAA (Union International des Associations Alpinistes) chapter and read, talk learn about the true nature of Mao's monster, it may not be visible in Shanghai or Hong Kong but in Tibet it still rages, or am I too beleive that the torture victims are alien abductees?
You sing to Beijing's tune, I don't. You sound like a communist when you say that any source that disagrees with you is a propagandist. Perhaps it doesn't fit into a middle kingdom mind but Tibet is and was the scene of crimes against humanity. To deny that is like denying the holocaust and many many other disasters in history. Revisionism is dangerous and in many parts of the world illegal.

pity the amiga didn't make it..
they were quite impressive machines, dunno why they didn't make it though.
But those were the days... Amiga vs. Atari vs. Mac dang...

Thank god I use Links
LOL, and that was the whole point in using a linux box to begin with... cuz we don't trust windows boxes..
