These are also advantages that employers should understand. My productivity gets better when my office is quiet, I am to low level to get my own office so lets keep people shut up! If someone is gonna slack for the sake of slacking, internet makes no difference, the slackers used to fuck around with printers and copiers or yap about their kids etc... Those of us who do get things done are generally information soakers anyway and the internet provides our midns with something different from our work, like a breather.

If the population of employees that surf the web at work have cost companies XXX$ then it probably has more to do with poor recruitment and management then the internet.

I think that even if you are going to use the recovery cd, you have a problem... Lets say you have a two year old pc with the original windows recovery cd from the manufacturer. You "nuke" the drive and reinstall. How long does it take you to get all the patches and updates downloaded? right.. Strike! Whilst updating the box after a vanilla install, you get infected.... What surprises me in this article however, is that the Knoppix cure is not mentioned. I have distributed more copies of Knoppix to colleagues (for their home computers) than I can shake a stick at! I think that about 60-70% of my colleagues have malware and of this group more than half is running Knoppix or Ubuntu to satisfy their daily internet needs.

Not only that, considering the time and effort he put into this, it probably cost more than buying appropriate hardware. If you are going to custom build then it should be for performance reasons. A 600 buck 1u server won't have a powerful cpu but heck, at 600 bucks you can have two for the price of one home built (if you factor in labour and parts)

I would love to have rack machines at home for the geek factor but then again, my dsl line is not sufficient for proper hosting, it is cheaper the way I have it now is one shared box with two buddies in a colo rack with a real connection.

As a matter of fact, our host is quite competitive and he's a laid back kinda guy. Even if you are located in a different country you may find him interesting. www.vksis.net . We only use him for colo as his virtual servers are not really competitive. But 59 euro for 2u hosting is a decent deal. We currently have one box with two ips but we are considering putting two 1u's in the spot as the prices for 1u's have come down considerably.

Many places don't mind roaming users, the government in Holland is activly promoting the public use of wlan! Of course if the network is "closed" with a password, the law is clear and says don't go there, if you do then you are committing an offense.
