    I think the sentiments from which Open Source benefits are directed against the dealings of a number of big software companies, not against the fact that most of these are American.

    With inductive loop antennas such as used for low/medium frequency RFID and this technology, the magnetic field strength drops off by approximately the third power of the distance.

    So, with a very sensitive receivers you might be able to eavesdrop at maybe twice the intended distance but that will be about it.

    Microsoft says Windows Media Player is an inherent part of the operating system and cannot be stripped out.

    Who are they trying to fool? When they said this about Internet Explorer I could imagine how this could be true, but what parts of Media player might be essential for other applications???

    Right...

    I always assumed that the big distance between earth and moon would easily put the common center of mass out in space. But I did not realize that the moon's mass is that much smaller (1/81 that of the earth).

    One is never too old to learn something new!

    if the common center of mass lies within the larger body, than the smaller object is a moon of the larger.

    Following this reasoning, Earth and its "moon" are a double planet...

    the problem is, there's no good way to kick somebody off of the Internet.

    You can try...

    I started sending "abuse" e-mails to ISP's whose network is used to send spam (terms and conditions of most ISP's prohibit sending spam).

    By opening extended header information in your e-mail client, and examining the "received" headers you can find out the IP address (watch out for fake "received" headers), and sometimes the domain, of the sending machine. You may need to use reverse DNS or whois services to find out the domain or the network owner of the IP address.

    I check www.domain to see if it's a regular operation.

    Then I forward the e-mail, including the extended header information, to abuse@domain asking to take appropriate measures. Hopefully the account will be shut down or the owner of a hijacked PC alerted.

    I don't know if it helps much but in any case I feel better doing this.

    I have the feeling that someone is trying to feed us a bogus story. I doubt there is a way to determine if any of this has actually happened.

    They probably also paid much less for allowing to be named. But then again, they should not have wanted to obtain these licenses even if they were paid for it!

    Still not right: it's SuSE.

    This is because in German, nouns are always capitalized, so the full name is Software und System Entwicklung (Software and System Development).

    GmbH (Gesellschaft mit beschrankter Haftung) is just German for "Ltd" (sort of).

    Hmmm. Until now, bad news for SCO was surprisingly more often than not followed by a rising stock price. It appears that stock price only tends to drop when there is not much news about SCO...

    the police came down hard on a group of about fifty 419 spammers in Amsterdam.

    That was hopeful news, but I haven't seen a big drop in 419 scam mails. I am still getting one or two each day...

    I started notifying the providers that their reply email accounts are with. The sooner those are shutdown, the less opportunity for their victims to get through a reaction.

    If anyone has another suggestion to make life difficult for them I'd like to hear it!

    There may be limits to the freedom of expression, but they are, and must be, regulated by law.

    If the contents on a website are illegal, then it must be shut down. If the contents on a web site are considered extremely objectional, but if they are not illegal, then the police should simply leave it alone.

    This guy may be applauded for trying to make "the Internet a more law-abiding place" as long he remembers it's not for him to define "law-abiding".

    Look at the size of that thing! Its huge!

    You're nuts.

    Given the VGA screen and the full keyboard it's amazing that it is only a bit thicker than a normal PDA.

    It's 4.25" x 3.25" x 1.0" compared to e.g. Dell Axim X5: 5.04 x 3.21 x 0.71
