More like I hate the typical /. meme's that maintain the "I learned C first and it is the only way to write n-tier web apps," that seem to shoot straight up in moderation.

I can understand the bloat brought on by OO, such as the proliferation of function pointers, increased use of dynamic memory, and of course, the executable image size hit of template instantiation. However in my limited experience I find that an OO-design doesn't have to be bloated or slow...especially not for the abstraction benefits.

I bought a new, full, retail Photoshop CS copy straight from Adobe for $299 after buying a broken Microtek X12USL scanner off EBay for $35 (incl. shipping) and using the enclosed Photoshop Elements 2.0 serial number to upgrade to CS. The Microtek website has details on the offer.

Total price: $335. Far more reasonable.

This is so amusing, and so simple that no one sees it.

Most people just use their computers, and don't drag religion into it. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter what OS you use as long as you can do what you want on your computer. Sure, each OS is good in some areas and worse in others, but it always amazes me that for a group of people acting for "freedom" try to scare users into switching to their cause. Or, you advocate choice, but you cry foul any time some big organization chooses something else.

In the midst of the, "it's not C it sucks," and "it has a GC only real programmers manage memory," and other bullshit arguments you're just ignoring what is generally a much needed cleanup of C++ that isn't terribly more complicated than the original C. I'm not saying you have to like it, but everyone seems to have read the tag line and not actually gone to the site. Walter is very thorough about why he made the choices he did. The only real point I've seen in all the posts was that it needs dynamic class loading, and I've wanted introspection to at least be an option. Also, I disagree with the syntax he used for templates, but that is a minor issue.

With C#'s generics being somewhat gimped and users working on a functional library for D that is similar to STL but easier to use, D is really shaping up nicely as a future development platform and a bleeding-edge language, kind of like what C++ is today with template metaprogramming. I tend to gravitate towards the looser, more esoteric languages like Perl and C++ because of the steep learning curve -- who doesn't enjoy a challenge?

So don't bitch about how it sucks because it isn't C. It's amazing C is still kicking.

I know knowledgable comments are looked down on at Slashdot, but the .NET SDK has been free from the start and included cl.exe, (the C++ compiler) but it was the non-optimizing compiler I think. What the .NET SDK didn't have was the full STL and a few other things that are now free.

The end-result of this is everyone gets a free compiler upgrade if they haven't moved to VC7.1 already. It means on my OSS project I can say "VC7.1 minimum," and expect everyone can follow suit without a problem. However I realize this isn't as fun as tin-foil explanations, so I'll let you get back to that.
