I suppose if one is really, really OCD, you could get your military strength up to 10000 and thus have an effective military strength of 5000, but that is not for us mere mortals (or those with a life of sorts).

Truthiness? No, when it's been tested in court, it's actually true. It's isn't "truthiness" just because you don't want to believe it.

It has been tested in a court. Appeals will surely follow. However, US != world, there have been different verdicts around the world. How's this for an example.

  11. IOW you go by "truthiness". No product is developed in a vacuum. The "new" notification system in iOS 5 is quite familiar (although more limited) from another mobile OS... but copying is OK in that case, right?

  12. Arguing with an Apple fan is a pointless exercise in futility, but it's not like I have anything better to do at the moment. So the question remains - have you ever used a Galaxy SIII? And if you have, in what way you feel it is a copy? As a disclaimer, I currently use that phone, but I'm by no means partial to Samsung - when it comes to tablets I prefer Transformers, and was really sad to retire my N900. Shame on Nokia for not continuing with Maemo/Meego (yes, I know N9, but I didn't want another last unicorn, hardware-wise the SIII seemed the most future proof).

  14. Re:Can it be made friendlier and stay true to Arch on Arch Linux For Newbies? Manjaro Is Here! · · Score: 1

I'm not an Arch developer, so this is just my impression as a user. Arch seems to target for simplicity and also being bleeding edge. As such, there are points when some very fundamental changes have to be made - for the benefit of the user, in my opinion, but it also means the user has to make the changes as well. It's been so many years that I can't even recall what it was called... but way back when men used to walk uphill both ways and edit their xorg.conf to get two monitors (actually, it wasn't even xorg.conf back then... X11.conf? It's been too many years. But I digress), device hotplugging and detecting in the first place on boot involved quite a few hacks. I can't recall what the most popular hack was, but Arch never embraced it (naturally, being Arch, those hacks were available for those who wanted them) - instead, once udev became available, that was the solution. And while it took some time for the popular DEs to utilize it as well, once they did, everything worked great without any unneeded (and buggy) layer in between.

But I'm genuinely curious - I've never really used Debian. From what I've gathered, there are three "branches": stable, unstable and testing. And sometimes, unstable (or is it testing? do correct me if I'm wrong) becomes stable, and a new very-much-unstable branch is formed. So, you are telling me that such an upgrade is always flawless? How about should you skip a few major releases (given how long they take with Debian that is highly unlikely, but bear with me), could you still upgrade?

Anyway, would I run Arch on a production server? Certainly not. Nor would I Debian, or any other "community" distro. When the shit hits the fan, there must be a corporation you can hold responsible. But for my own (also professional) use I've found Arch to be very likeable. YMMV, HTH, HAND. But at the moment, instead of rambling online, the scotch next to me seems more desirable at the moment. Perhaps I'll continue rambling further later, even more incoherent than now.

Well, I've been using Arch since... had to actually login into the forum to see how long, since 2004. At some point I when I was finally able to use Linux at work, I told myself I should use a more "professional" distribution, as I'm partial to KDE I tried OpenSUSE. That didn't last long, it was a really buggy and generally unpleasant experience, I promptly returned to Arch. In my experience, given how bleeding edge Arch is, it's really amazingly stable. Yes, every now and then the updates require some manual intervention, but if pacman refuses to upgrade for some reason, check the home page instead of forcing the upgrade and you should be fine.

Having said that, the rolling release system also means you have to go with the flow - you don't need to upgrade daily, or weekly even, but still every now and then. My MythTV backend (which I've retired since I found I really don't watch that much tv) was on Arch, and was pretty much unattended for a few years. Trying to upgrade that box simply didn't work. Mind you, it worked fine for what it was intended to do, and probably still would should I turn it on, so as such there was no need to upgrade.

I'd hate to turn this to another Gnome vs. KDE wankfest... but hey, this is slashdot, what else are we here for?

When KDE4 was released, it was bad. Really a clusterfuck of epic proportions. I migrated from 3.5.x around 4.2 and it was barely usable even then. And I hated Dolphin initially with a passion, thank $DEITY Konqueror was still around. But as new releases kept coming, they kept improving at a steady pace; and now at 4.9, I think Dolphin is my favourite file manager to date. If they took away the split-screen mode, I'd be absolutely infuriated. So the KDE plan seems to be, at least in retrospect, make a new version with some very radical changes, then keep improving on that and adding new features. The Gnome plan seems to be similar, except instead of adding new features old ones get removed. Perhaps my needs as a user differ from those of Joe Average, but I don't need to think twice which approach I prefer.

(Having said that, KDE is by no means perfect. Arch offers pretty much a vanilla version of KDE, and some of the defaults are just braindead. They can be changed, but if you don't know what you're looking for, the particular settings might not be that discoverable. But that's for another debate.)

The Transformer Prime (available in multiple variants). Better how? Well, it has an OS you can install your own apps on for a start. It has better battery life. It has a hardware keyboard. At the top end, it has a faster processor too. I think it has better aesthetics, but that's more subjective.

Nitpicking a bit, but the Tegra 3-based models Asus makes at the moment (if you discount the Nexus 7) are Transformer Prime (being phased out at the moment), Transformer Pad (the entry level model) and Transformer Infinity (the high-end model). I have an Infinity, and it's great, but let's not kid ourselves - even with a higher-clocked Tegra and more memory bandwidth, it's not as fast as "the new iPad". Not that it matters at all, it's perfectly zippy in operation and will happily play back 1080p video. And one area where it really shines (quite literally) is the IPS+ display, it will work outdoors as well. The iPad doesn't in my experience.

I'm not American and I do care about US politics. It's an infinite source of entertainment, it makes local politics here seem so boring. Everything must be as polarized as possible, it's always "us vs. them". And then there are gems like "not intended to be a factual statement" - as an outsider, that's 100% pure awesome. Were I American though I'd be quite infuriated, and for your sake I wish you'd have effectively more than two parties. Not that it would in itself solve anything, in the end there will be the government and opposition, so in a way "us vs. them" as well. But as the government will more than likely contain more than a single party, some compromises have to be made; instead of partisan bickering (which sadly will still exist, but perhaps not so much), politicians will have to try to reach a consensus. The result may be disappointing to all parties, but that's politics for you.
