For the PC targeted systems, they're using Silverlight, with MS's streaming stack. For non-PC (mac/windows) devices, I wouldn't know. Most likely an MS licensed codec for that target system (MS does have streaming codecs for linux and other embedded platforms), so likely using them there too.

Not if it's a bastard cross between Couch's interface and OData... I really wouldn't want that. I happen to like the MongoDB interfaces. The largest issue is that different NoSQL systems have different features that a unified interface can't/won't cover because of their nature. Migration paths are fine, but with document-centric data, moving is easier than switching differing SQL based data stores, as someone who's worked on a migration from Sybase to Oracle, and another from DB2 to MS-SQL, it isn't fun. NoSQL would have been, grab next document from A, shove into B, for the most part... Different models have differing use cases.

I honestly like the MongoDB interfaces better than what I would get from MS + Couch imho.

To hell with that, I've been pushing MongoDB and NodeJS as a means for a unified language... JS everywhere (we do a lot of Flash/ActionScript work too). Not taking a slide back if I can avoid it. Have 3 pretty big projects coming up, one of which just screams use node/mongo given the use case, and data needs. UnSQL really seems like an attempt for MS & CouchDB to have their standard (probably a bastard cross between OData and the current couch interfaces).

I think it comes down to the server licensing of Adobe, vs. MS... probably got a sweet deal. There's also the fact that MS's streaming system is a bit better for load scaling than Adobe's, even if Google can make it work. I really home something more comes out in this space.

Well, maybe.. an AMD E-350 (lowest end motherboard/cpu I'd use for HTPC) will run you about $250 for workable hardware, and another $150 for licensed software, so $400, which isn't less, but more flexible.. another $100 or so for universal programmable remote, and wireless htpc keyboard/mouse (still can't find a good one). And yet $100 more, if you plan on doing even light gaming on the thing, for better hardware. It isn't particularly bad, and I prefer an HTPC, but I can see the appeal.

Honestly, it's the fact that it's been well supported for updates (until the PS4 is released) would be a decent reason. The fact is, the majority of BlueRay players at the low end haven't been updated well, or even well supported is a big deal. I finally broke down, and put a BlueRay drive in my HTPC earlier this year. My biggest reason for avoiding BluRay, and the PS3 is it's Sony. I think that HD-DVD *should* have won in a free market, without the backroom deal, and Sony's vertical monopoly over blueray technology and the media for it.

That said, I could see why people would use it solely as a media player, my HTPC build cost me about $550 with OS and BlueRay playback software. $300 that does almost as well, and can play newer console titles (I'm fine with emulated) isn't a bad deal... even if just for the media. Compared to Boxee Box, and other media players + storage + blueray drive.

I have to agree here.. some of the *BSD options would be a pretty decent fit IMHO, and any Linux distro will be a closer match than windows. If you don't need Exchange, or have .Net based server applications (though Mono is okay), then you really don't need Windows server. Personally, I like Windows well enough but the presentation of it as the most acceptable option for IT is somewhat baffling.

That's funny... Apple has a history of dropping hardware support at under two years, and has had no problems in upgrades breaking compatibility. A lot of programs from the early 32-bit windows APIs still work 12+ years later. That's simply unheard of. As to server support, they tend to support for 5+ years, then drop off... which is still better than most commercial support options.

Is it better than say a RedHat support contract, I couldn't say, most of my Linux experience has been without any support contract. I can say that MS support for their OS tends to be a bit better than Apple.

I actually thought the bad-guy guns that vaporized people was more chilling than the bullets... I do think it was moderately violent, so it would depend on the 5-6 year old. The action/violence wasn't as bad as some more intense action films. It really did have a lot of realism to it. I would say just talk to your kids. I don't know why more parents don't just ask their kids if they are comfortable with something. I don't think the Red Skull as a villain was particularly scary, and he gets it in the end... It's the realism to the violence itself, and different kids can/do handle it differently. Talk to them, let them know it isn't real, but will be very realistic, and that if they aren't comfortable, you can talk about it.

I wouldn't think much about taking a 6-7 year old who hasn't been sheltered from anything moderately violent or mildly sexual. Most will want to see this. I saw it over the weekend, and honestly think it was much more of a clear good/evil story than even Iron Man (which was a great film), and think it did at least as good with an origin story.

As "wrong" as it is, I'd say if you are really concerned, download a screener version, and sift through it... don't watch it through, just jump around a bit. If you do that, I would say, you may want to actually see it in the theater... I'm not a fan of screener versions of films, and will generally go see something in the theater. It's just a suggestion if you are really concerned, then review it... or hell see it yourself ahead of time and judge for yourself.
