Well, I don't like being the only one, or one of billions. I would like my own tastes to become mainstream. The music I like, the kind of books I read, etc. But they don't. And I don't feel better or worse because of that.

But anyway you misunderstood (I give you the benefit of doubt. I could have said "you totally twisted the meaning of what I wrote") my final statement, I didn't say I like things that aren't mainstream. I meant to say that things I like usually aren't popular with "most people". So when I like a TV show, most likely it's going to get cancelled...

well, then most mainstream products suck. you don't have to be elite to figure it out (think american idol). I know because I live in Argentina and we get american sitcoms and things like that 2 or 3 weeks after being aired in the US. And most of them just suck! Yet, these seem to be very popular in the US. Just as much as telenovelas are popular here.

And how can I tell a show is good and it's not mainstream? Because I like it. And what happens when I like a show? It gets cancelled... And I think this happens very often for people here in /.

ok this is the snobby kind of comment I hate. just because you think you're better because you don't watch TV (or because you're just dirt poor and can't afford cable) doesn't mean TV sucks. I watch a lot of TV, but most of it is cable tv. I don't watch crappy mainstream air broadcast tv because it just plain sucks (much as anything mainstream, like pop music or whatever). But well, if you want to miss live news, documentaries, old shows, shows relating to a specific thing, or whatever, then suit yourself.

I pay for cable. My cable company pays the station. They are getting money from me right now. But alas, now I have to pay MORE to avoid the ads?

In my country (Argentina) they were trying to pass a law limiting cable channels the amount of time they can show ads. That's because it's unfair for regular broadcasters. They only get income from ads. Cable channels get their income from ads AND ALSO from me (through my cable subscription).

If I make 500 services thats a $2500 for me. If I make 0 services (it has happened during the great crisis of 2002-2003), I get paid NOTHING. For a house call I get paid the same within a 30km radius AND USD 0,10 per extra block outside those 30km. But the shop is mine, and I have to pay my own taxes, power, telephone, expenses, employees, rent, WHATEVER. I also have to buy my own instruments and tools, and get my own training. Except ONLY for Philips which once every 2 years gives us some training (where I lose money because I have to close the shop, and pay for transportation and hotels).

  13. Re:drm sucks on Xbox 360 Backup Discs Bootable · · Score: 0

I will illustrate this with an example. I live in Argentina.

Movie Ticket: ARGENTINA: ARS 6 (USD 2). US: USD 9 (new movies, even some american ones not yet premiered in the US because movie premiers are thursdays here instead of fridays, example: http://imdb.com/title/tt0382077/releaseinfo).

Music CD: ARGENTINA: ARS 28 (~USD 9). US: USD 17.99
PC Game: ARGENTINA ARS 40-120 (USD 13-40). US: USD 20-80.

    And now curiously:
Console game: ARGENTINA ARS 240-300 (USD 80-100) US: USD 20-80.
Windows XP Pro: ARGENTINA ARS 600 (USD 200), US: USD 200.

So what is wrong with this? 300 Pesos is the monthly income for many individuals here in my country. So, movie tickets, music CD, and PC game prices ARE adjusted for what people can buy here.
But check the price for Win XP pro. Some people would have to work 2 months to pay for their original XP pro. I'm sure very few americans would have to work 2 months (many would have to work 2 days) to pay for their XP.

So why aren't those prices adjusted? Newsflash: People won't spend their monthly salary in ONE piece of software. They WILL use a pirated copy. I do. I do NOT feel guilty, because what these companies do is STEAL from poor people. If they told me a copy of XP costs 200 pesos I might have an original copy, but I won't pay 600 pesos for it. Microsoft (and the game makers) have to sit down and think for a solution about this issue. And that solution is not XP starter edition. That's just a big corporation abusing the poor and the ignorant. So I'm happy if they lose against the pirates. And don't tell me to use linux. I want the games, I want the compatibility of windows, I want all these things. But I want the price for that to be fair. You can't charge the same price in the whole world (McDonald's and Coca Cola don't, and they do pretty good outside the US. So maybe Microsoft can learn a lesson from them).

That depends on how you see it. my country had many "de-facto" governments, the last one from 76 to 83 and allegedly the military killed 30.000 people. No, people here don't trust the govt too much. 16. ok so what's the big deal on UK MPs Approve Compulsory ID Cards · · Score: 0

I really don't understand it. I live in a country (Argentina) where ID is compulsory. It's called the DNI (National Identity Document) and it's issued at birth, and updated at 8 and 16 years old or so.
It's a booklet with my photo, my name, the name of my parents, and my wife/husband. It also registers my current address (and all previous addresses), and if I do military service, it has a little page for it too.

Also at the end there is the vote log where every time I go to vote (vote is also compulsory) they place this little stamp in there and there is evidence that I voted (because I can go to jail -- but most likely get a fine -- if I dont vote).

So I have to ask myself, after reading slashdotist-tinfoil-hatter comments about how you are smart enough to overcome the need for an ID and walk around the country with cash and a copy of the birth certificate to avoid having an ID.

Here's how it works here. If we're not in de-facto state (which hasn't been the csae since 1983) a cop or whoever cannot just ask for my ID. I don't need to show him or her, unless he has a court order, for example they usually do age checks in club areas, but otherwise they can't ask for my ID.

Suppose I want to open a bank account, I show up with some cash and my DNI. Plane ticket? Cash, and DNI. Pay with credit card? Cash, and DNI. I can do basically anything with it because it's convenient and it works anywhere.

But suppose I don't want to carry it around all day (good idea, because it's like using your car's master key instead of the duplicate. If you lose it you're in deep shit.). I need some other, more portable kind of ID. No problem, I can go to the federal police and get the federal police ID. It says my name, address, birth date, my DNI number (of course) and has my photo on the front, and my signature and thumb print on the back.

    Whats the big deal then?

for example, I write good Microchip assembler programs, but can't deal with C, or 68HC assembler, etc. I've been programming microchip for so long that I know the way things work. If I wanted to program 68HC assembeler I'd need to, basically, start from scratch and practice for a good few months. After that I'd already lost mpasm practice and will kind of suck at it.

any GOOD programmer can tell you that you can't just switch languages and have the same productivity. if you think you can, then you're not a good programmer.
