    I don't have a link to back this up, but I'm sure one of the CDR manufacturer websites can verify this. Cyanide is used as part of the dye in certain CDR's - that would explain the Almond smell.

    I remeber this technology as well. I believe it was being pushed in laptops at the time. The goal was to block nosy people behind or aside you on an airplane or park bench. Perhaps they're banking on a post-9/11 paranoid public to embrace their unappealing technology the second time around?

    An alternative high-speed transportation method was proposed by the DOT a not too long ago. Intelligently, they never made an official press release, just a few leaked internal memos; however I like this idea better:

    Toll Plazas would be modified on Florida's turnpike to allow for high-speed access with Florida's ETC SunPass. Once on the Turnpike, speed would be unregulated. Exits would be modified to accommodate for this. Users without Sunpass would be allowed access after their license place was captured by photo enforcement - they would be sent a bill and a Sunpass Application.

    Intro: I saw "XXX" a couple of hours ago. I think it was intended solely as an action flick, but for a minute, let's pretend there's a message here. In this life we enjoy freedoms given to us by research and technological improvements, also a few of those freedoms are provided by the organization of government.

    Many times we raise a red flag because of privacy issues, and I agree that the direction we (as a world) are progressing in is sad at times. However, let's put this in perspective for a moment. Regardless of your beliefs in a higher power or lower power, one thing is sure...does it really matter that the government knows what you are up to? Yes we live free lives and I know my concern is that perhaps, in the future I will want to do something underhanded and this system will prevent it...what fun would life be without the challenges? Our lives span only a minute on this world, live in your situation and make life a joy: you're the only one who can do that. You can make a case for any possibility, but does the existence of this database can't interfere with that!

    By the way, do any of you really expect that the government will be able to implement this without people like us helping them? If you have a hand in it, you can control it ;-)

    Retraction: Didn't realize we were talking about 1/10 size models. In that case, 9ft/s is fairly impressive.

    On the other hand, how about porting this project/competition to full size cars? Obviously there is a funding issue, but we could Interest a broader audience who, in turn, may be willing to provide grant money?

    I hope I miscalculated this, but I figured 9ft/s is around 6mph. 9ft/1s:1mi/5280ft:3600s/1hr For those of you in modern nations, I apologize for the Imperial units. However; I am a speed-crazed American and albeit autonomous, if it can't go 45mph, I'm not impressed...

    On a more serious note: Is the direction finding logic so intense that a greater speed can't be safely achieved?

    I recently interned with a southeastern utility company. The majority of their software is created in-house. The main purposes are customer tracking, inventory tracking, workflow, and in house tech support. All of these applications are handled well with a database and a front end, so that's what the IT department was creating. The infrastructure in this company became highly specialized in delivering these custom made applications (read: insecure bloatware), and frequently, downtime was a result. After the Y2K 'crisis' passed without a hitch, that preperation team was restasked to evaluate and deal with the rising IT v. Infrastructre problem. The main thing that came out of this committee was a slogan: "We're a Public Utility, not a Software Company." Management agreed and the decision was made to phase out in-house software developement. The goal was to grab ready-made, off-the-shelf, tested and proven solutions, modify them only as necessary and deploy them company wide. I feel that this is the best solution, afterall why re-invent the wheel? It was getting to a point where 1/2 of the employees were tasked to various IT departments.

    That's what I've seen, just fyi: I was in a non-IT position(it's kinda fun telling the in-house tech support how to do their job and getting an "oh yea, now I remeber" response).

    As long as you're using shielded cat5 cable and your phone lines are shielded, you shouldn't have a problem running them through the same conduit. Be aware, however, that if you run your cat5 cable within 6 inches (safe margin) of electrical sources, you will see interference and will experience performance problems. I'm not sure what your electrical people are doing, but it's common to place electrical outlets near phone outlets (fax machines, cordless phones, etc). Just FYI, be aware of this.

    There are those of us who take comfort in knowing that our government doesn't have a single place to go for every tidbit of information on its citizens. Sure, we mihgt be only a few steps away from that today, but remeber government isn't a being; it is people. Likewise, trust the people of the government with the nature you would trust the clerk at a hotel front desk. You expect him to do his job, but would you really be surprised if he swiped that $5 you left on the counter?

    2 million people have the game or 2 million people bought the game? Theere's a big difference. My school there's about 15 Half-Life geeks. Guess what? All 15 of those kiddos have burned copies from the original CD, only 2-3 use the original CD key, but 15 people are palying half-life for $40. If that trend is world-wide, then out of the 2 million people who have the game, then only 130,000 paid $40 for it, still that's a cool 5.2 million bucks.

    I've had this problem with Adelphia as well. Their support monkies form a wall that's very hard to get through. It's especially difficult since when you find someone who actually seems to know what they're doing, your replies go back into a 'support pool', not back to the person who originally replied to your message. I assume that the network admins have thier own email addresses like ts-jdoe@home.com. I believe your best chance would be to directly contact a known sysadmin through telephone or email.

    Oh my! You are such geniuses!!! Who would have ever though to charge for a hyperlink!!! I hope you patented your idea, someone is sure to steal it! After all, with all the .com failures how is anyone supposed to make money off the net??? Charge for hyperlinks that's how! ha ha! Oh by the way, how much did you pay for that web server you're running? Perhaps they should change the Apache License to include a clause that requires you to give 98% of your profits to the ASF if you use their software to do something so ridiculously stupid.

  15. I will continue to use MAPS RBL on MAPS RBL Is Now Censorware (Updated) · · Score: 3

    I run a mail server and employ the MAPS's RBL and ORBS's DULs to save me the headache of some spam. A while ago I was informed of ORBS's encounters with Above.net and Paulie Vix. I think Paul Vix is an incredible horrible person and his methods are evil (Above.net routers were advertising routes for ORBS, then dropping any packets they attracted according to the orbs site.)ORBS seems to have stopped proclaiming the evilness of MAPS openly, but you can still see many statements on the site leading to that assumption. So, this will not stop me from using RBL, it works for me, as my web traffic is not in any way related to my mail traffic or MAPS. I don't endorse Paul Vix or MAPS, but the level of spam I recieve is disgusting, anything I can do to cut down on it I will. As a matter of fact, I personally block any spamming servers (i.e. sprintmail.com) that the RBL's and DUL's refuse to block, yet it seems I get more and more SPAM every day. Perhaps we need more of those exocution-style killings of spammers like we had in MA a few years back.

    I'm on my high school swim team, and we use the local junior college's swimming pool to practice and do home meets. We're in Ft. Pierce so I bet we compete with your wife's team (Don't say it's MCC please...). Anyway, we have a set of touchpads that we use for important meets where the times matter for more than just which team wins (qualifying times and regional meets). These are a pain in the neck to install and clean afterward, but there are software programs which will print the statictics (accuerate to milliseconds) after each event. Mabye your wife's school needs to invest in a similar system instead of re-inventing one. If you need mroe info, email.

    The human body creates it's own kinetic energy field. That is how the Seiko kinetic watches without batteries work. Just have to figure out how to harness this without a huge increase in size. Perhaps something like a computer on a lan and the internet. It doesn't try to connect to the internet, it just sends out requests and assumes that they'll be answered. I know I'm stupid and this probablly shows it, but ohwell.

    I'd have to argue that point. Pending the breakup of Microsoft, we really don't know what's going to happen with windows. However, if any corporations want to really jump on the Linux bandwagon and pump it out to AOL using(yes, i know there are some really smart people out there who use AOL) kiddos at home, they're going to have to add lots of gaming support. Something similar to DirectX from Microsoft should do the trick(sound+graphics+interface+netcode.) Then they'd have to goto Africa and capture an 800 lb gorilla to force game companies to use their 'TuxLikes2Play' code.

    Okay, who here who reads magazines (computer magazines you perv) or surfs the web regulary hasn't seen an ad for Thief II. I've seen plenty of them everywhere. It's no surpise that they have strong sales records then, probablly due to the advertising.

    However, is that how they shot themselves in the foot? Did they spend too much on advertising, it sold the game, but was it more than they could hand out?

    I honestly don't know, but there's some speculation for you. With the success that Thief II is getting, they will likely be bought out by someone like EA or Sierra (doesn't EA own Sierra?) Anyway, we have Thief II and they don't have any killer games planned that I know of so not a huge loss.

    If anyone bothered to look under the surface...
    With all the recent lawsuits, someone is sure to sue someone if their trademark is being violated and US trademark offices have a way of siding with the money unfortunately. Also, if ICann doesn't recongize it, then how will it work without software engineers programming .god into every internet app or OS? Try convincine microsoft.com that even though I own microsoft.god and they have no way of getting it back, they should still support the .god TLD.

    I just hope that they don't cost $110US a year like those damn .cc names. That's the gayest thing ever, even gayer than NSI saying they own your domain name I feel. Who feels like suing NSI right about now?

    What ever happened to that? Comments are owned by the poster....that means /. has no authority over them correct? Microsoft is asking /. and Andover to violate at least TWO constitutional amendments, the greatest laws of this country.

    Those amendments:

    • FIRST AMENDMENT: Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...
      This basically means that no law can be made to limit free speech, in this case free speech would be the poster referring to Microsoft's [cheap-ass]product.
    • FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT: ...No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive ay person of life, liberty, or property without due process of the law...
      Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness...in this case it would appear Microsoft is trying to coerce /. to take the comments from the owners and destroy them. Due to the disclaimers, posters own their comments. It's probably safe to say(for another 3 seconds anyway) that here on slashdot are the only copies of those comments. Destroying them is equivalent to going down to the parking lot and destroying someone's car.
