The race to the bottom happens because the consumer wants and will buy cheap products.

The race to the bottom happens because most people do not have the kind of income to throw money at expensive computer products other than a phone company subsidized iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Let's face it, for the average person a computer at home is not a necessity it is a luxury. Phone rates are so cheap people can make cross continent calls for little more than the cost of their plan. If people really need to communicate they can do it by phone. Computers/laptops at home now-a-days are mostly used (by the masses) for looking at Facebook (or social media of choice), playing solitaire, searching Wikipedia to see what disease that twinge they just had is likely to be, surfing for porn, or wasting time on slashdot. Nothing I would call very important, and more to the point, nothing that requires huge computing power. A shite computer can handle what most people want it to do. Why would someone want to pay $1000 or more for an Apple or even an expensive Windows box to do that (except if they want to be the cool kid on the block).

Full disclosure: I use a Mac at work (for a mobile app dev company... server side stuff) and am typing this on Windows 7 Pro at home. I don't have to pay for the Mac Pro Retina Laptop at work... if I had to pay for my work computer I'd buy a Windows box if I could choose W7. I'd choose a Mac only my only choice of Windows box was W8/Metro. The Mac UI compared to W7 is crap. Mac has the worst file manager in the world. And key commands are out of the dark ages. But it beats the shit out of Metro any day (and I admit, I like the Unix command line).

First will someone please mod my first comment from this thread up out of the cellar. It shouldn't be modded down for correcting an untruth. Now to correct another person's untruth.

I am Canadian. I live in North America. I like America and most Americans but not always the governments. I am NOT American. I am Canadian. Get that through your head. And every single Canadian will say the same thing about themselves and Americans (except the idiots who think the War of 1812 is still ongoing). The whole is called 'The Americas'. Note the 's' at the end. Come to Canada and call someone American. If the aren't a tourist visiting from America, you will be flamed to your face. Most Canadians don't have a problem with Americans, and most like the country (but maybe not the governments). But it is like calling an Austrian a German because they both speak German. You will not be received favourably.

So here is your corrected geography lesson as you seem to be horribly confused and/or misinformed. In the north part of The AmericaS, is North America. It is divided into three countries: Canada, The United States of America (also known as 'America'... no 's' at the end), and Mexico. Canadians and Mexicans (who, when they are speaking English) use the terms, Canadian for Canadians, Mexican for Mexicans, and Americans for Americans, the latter of which are people who come from the United States of America. We do not call them 'United States of Americans'.

Mind you, you might just be the troll that others are accusing me of.

Don't have to consider. It's pretty well known. Mind you, they probably have as many people traveling to other countries as people from Europe visiting other regions (if you look at the 'countries' of Europe being akin to 'states' in the U.S.). Compare apples to apples. The U.S. is as big or bigger than Europe and has as many or more people. Traveling between states there is the almost the same as Europeans traveling between countries. Certainly the distances are the same and often more. Average Europeans I am sure don't look beyond Europe since it doesn't affect them; the same reason many Americans don't pay attention to what happens outside America.

I don't know if you missed it in this case they take this catalyst and deposit it on a light sensitive substrate lattice. When it has finished depositing they shine a light on it which dissolves the substrate leaving a porous amorphous catalyst structure. They think the added surface area helps it be a better cheaper catalyst... more surface to interact react with. Sometimes it isn't the new material on its own but also how you apply it. I couldn't read the article you linked to because it is behind a pay wall.

There is a lot of open space between the wind turbine towers of many wind farms that isn't being put to use. How about putting hydrogen storage and fuel cell engines there? Then they can transmit electricity when the wind doesn't blow, or store power generated during non-peak times.

  16. Re:Nonsense. on New Catalyst Allows Cheaper Hydrogen Production · · Score: 1

My thought was that maybe the existing catalysts poison very quickly so the added cost is in constantly replacing them. Also in the scarcity of them. If you can make many, many cheap commercial scale electrolyzers for the same price as one using rare earth metals (which may poison at the same rate) this might account for the price savings. Would like to see some of these figures too.

For sure, this would be one of the biggest hurdles I think. Most people assume a gas is a gas is a gas. The average person needs to understand that it is like the difference between a fishnet bag holding bowling balls versus a fishnet bag holding baseballs. You need smaller holes to keep baseballs in. And current economical storage will need even tighter tolerances for hydrogen. I wonder about ceramic or carbon fibre lining and/or valves to solve the brittle part. Or one for the valves and another for a lining.

  19. Re:Nonsense. on New Catalyst Allows Cheaper Hydrogen Production · · Score: 1

You are not factoring in time and are assuming the money is disposable. Over a longer period of time the fuel costs will add up to more than the expensive engine. Assume we need the engine now and your investment won't pay off for years. You don't get the return till way after you have gained the return and benefit of the more expensive engine. And most people don't factor in today's real cost in the investment... i.e. the return dollars in the future are cheaper than today's dollars.

Never mind factors like, will the moderate priced engine have higher operation and consequential costs? For example carbon based power plants have tons/tonnes of environmental impact that are never factored in that make the actual cost in the long run far higher. Something that seems more expensive up front might not have that hidden cost in the end.

In the real world, your argument is too simplistic.
