I pretty much left slashdot once, when Dice took over, because the quality of the content went downhill... now the quality of the site has gone downhill too. So long slashdot.
BTW, for those who remember CmdrTaco, he's working on a pretty interesting new project called Trove - check it out!
It isn't that far fetched. There are common accounts of pilots seeing weather balloons (typically 2-3ft dia) at 37000ft, while flying 400mph+... Another perspective is that 200 mph is only about 3 times faster than your usual freeway speed. Think about how easy it would be to spot a 3ft quadcopter flying in a field 200ft from the side of a freeway.
Actually, this was close to the very first thing I thought as I read this... Great, another brilliant and innovative piece of technology that is going to get banned because the government doesn't like what it might be able to do.
Yea, Gluster has a really nice API for writing what they call "translators". I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to write a translator that presents your cloud service of choice as a storage brick, and from there you just tie it all together as desired.
... unless the material can be proven libelous (and even then it will be a long, ugly battle). If people like Rick Santorum can't make the spreadingsantorum.com site go away, you're not likely going to make yours go away.
Your best shot will be to get a positive site ranked higher using various SEO tactics.
... it is very unlikely they will ever be usable as a replacement for normal computers. It would just be silly when it is much, much easier to make a much, much faster electronic computer.
Someday that will sound very much like the oft-repeated (and wrongly attributed) "640k ought to be enough for anyone!"
1) Lease a box at a site with reliable, low-cost bandwidth (Somewhere like PhoenixNAP, AtlantaNAP, Rackspace, etc.)
- This should run you between $50 - $150/mo for a decent system with several terabytes/mo data transfer (More than enough for Hulu, Netflix, etc.).
2) Make some friends in the Navy IT dept.
- Have them help you set up a hosted VPN service on the box in their off time.
This will be the lowest cost, most secure, and most reliable service you can get.
He was 74, not 80, and he held a current 2nd class medical certification from the FAA. Most private pilots only have a 3rd class; his health was fine and almost certainly had nothing to do with it. You can read more about his credentials here: http://www.av8rdan.com/2011/09/before-assuming-age-was-the-cause-of.html
Also, photos are circulating that show control surfaces missing from the aircraft before the crash. Something went wrong mechanically - please do your research before making mindless assumptions. http://corduroyplanet.blogspot.com/2011/09/chilled.html
I was going to reference the same article from Tom's - they basically have already done what OP is asking for, using hardware including Cisco, Aruba, Meraki, Ruckus, Apple, and HP. The second and third pages "Hardware And Methodology, Explained" might especially be of interest.
Self hosting your e-mail is going to be a nightmare; primarily due to the spam and security issues noted above. If you do continue to peruse this effort, you will run into the following:
1. Problems filtering incoming spam
2. Problems with outgoing e-mail not being delivered (incorrectly blocked because "they" don't know/care about you)
3. Problems with ensuring proper security (not rocket science, but much more difficult than just setting a good password)... and you haven't even touched your webmail UI yet.
Personally, if it's the "sandcastle on google's beachfront" problem that you're worried about, simply make sure you have a good backup of your gmail, and an account with a second major email provider that you can fall back on, and you're good to go.

Another "me too" here (for the first three)! The online medium just can't do those publications justice.
Yes, this... I can't believe there aren't more people with this answer.

Might it be that the sound was a joke going over YOUR head? ;-)

The value of the coins as historical artifacts is likely to be significantly higher than the market rate for gold.

Um, you've got to go further than that. Yes it's a private company, but where do they go for their funding?
... where are THEY getting their money from?
Oh for a few mod points right now.
A purportedly large number of employees were highly aware of how bad things were. One employee even published a rather scathing open letter to the company about a year ago: http://www.bgr.com/2011/06/30/open-letter-to-blackberry-bosses-senior-rim-exec-tells-all-as-company-crumbles-around-him/
No... read his subject line.
I've used these guys for about a year now with very good success: http://www.securedservers.com/index.php

I feel dated, I mean, "back in the day" this was how you used a machine like this...

It feels quite a bit smoother and somewhat faster too. Nice job.
