This woman may have been the catalyst, but the potential for suicide was already there. Should society as a whole walk around on eggshells to avoid whatever trigger will cause the already mentally unstable to go over the edge?
Let's say you honk your horn and some guy flips out and shoots himself. Now, in most places, honking your horn is illegal unless you are alerting someone to danger. So, should you then be charged to the full extent of the law?
First off, the potential for suicide is there in everyone with the ability to physically kill themselves.
Second, if you were to find out that your neighbor's kid has issues, and you set up an elaborate scheme with the intent to cause him or her serious emotional harm, and proceed to, you will of course be partially to blame for it. I am not sure how many people here get that Lori Drew was 40 something, picking on a teen with emotional problems. Regardless of the medium, she is partially responsible for this girls death.
If I honk my horn at some guy, and he kills himself, then he is just a nutcase we are probably better off without. But if I know the guy is actually 13 and has horrible reactions to honking horns and I set it up for him to be blasted repeatedly with horns and he loses his shit and kills himself, then yes, I expect to be prosecuted in Civil court at the very least, and quite probably criminal court
This is so eff'd in the A I don't even know where to start. If someone harasses you IRL, who do you blame? The... air that carried their words to your ears?
Please.. feel free to find a local 13 yr old girl in real life and harass her in public when you reach your early 40s. I have a feeling you will see exactly who will be blamed.... you, dummy.
If you harass someone IRL, THE MORON DOING THE HARASSING IS BLAMED you fuckwit. And I am sure that if you harass the wrong child and they kill themselves IRL you will be sued into oblivion and pretty much rightfully so.
According to Kevin Smith, they had problem with online D-bags so they atarted charging like 99c or some pittance to get a membership + post and it seemed to take care of the problem.. Apparently Jerkoffs/trolls are not only fuckwads..but they are lazy and/or cheap fuckwads to boot..
Whether or not your site has enough traffic to merit that course of action is another story entirely..
Turn about are safer..unless the road is busy, or your a pedestrian, or your on a bike.. F the bikers and the peds, they should be driving cars anyways right? oh, but that would make the road busier? Damn.
As far as MS is concerned, if SQL server is your back end, then the fact that its a single ID being used by your web service is irrelevant.. every user who hits your through your site requires either a CAL or you need to buy a per processor license.. I wasn't aware they charged any sort of connection license for connecting to IIS other than the OS cost..
I believe this was directed at the only 4 "national" carriers Verizon/ATT/Sprint/T-mobile here in the us. Yes, there is alltel(soon to be aquired by one of the aforementioned,) cricket, helio, etc etc, but ask most on the east coast if they have ever heard of them and you will get blank stares. And yes, they all cripple their phones in one way or another, well, maybe not sprint, but I don't know anyone who doesn't have issues with them so they are out for me at least. And if you want gsm(as CDMA phones give you very limited selection) its either ATT or T-mobile.. both cripplers, and T-mobile has by far the smallest network footprint (although I hope this improves with their pending 3g rollout) So no, there really is very little choice in most places, and not just "the sticks"
Incorrect Sir! The reason you get the page is because of exactly what the parent posted. The MAC of the MODEM needs to be registered on Comcast's back end. They now do that stupid software install because they were getting too many calls from Joe Six-pack getting confused trying to "Self install". I just tell them my laptop is a "work" pc and locked down, they kindly ask for the MAC of the modem and enter it into their system. And like magic, it works.
The touch screen works like a charm, the interface is really fabulous and functional.. and I would think that after a year it will still be going strong.. unless you have fingers made of stone flesh.. I avoided touchscreens after seeing the terrible wear on my treo's touchscreen years ago after relatively light stylus usage..
Then again, I cannot attest to the long term viability of capacitive touchscreens.. Anyone know about them? Do they "lose" sensitivity after use/time?
weird.. because Verizon and ATT have almost identical rates for thier plans.. when one co raises their price, the other follows suit.. Perhaps VZW should have gone with GSM instead of CDMA for a more universal market.. Can you imagine the VZW UI on the iPhone? That would probably be fabulous..yeah..
That Mateo_LeFou is an utter moron if he/she can be describe this as a "nice piece". And Taco is just trying to get people all up in arms for posting it.. I beleive the first post perfectly illustrates the innaccuracy and trollish nature of the "article".
Nothing to see here..move along
Yeah.. I think it uses 5 cameras under the screen to track movement etc.. I doubt there is more than 1 camera in the iPhone let alone 5 behind the screen
How did you manage to get Apple to sell you a Mac without OS X ?
The difference is that OSX actually works nicely.. unlike Vista.. so I would just have to install XP in parallels for when I need MS and still have OSX for the rest of the time.. Vista is the problem..
I was actually cut off by two different Dell "Sales" reps when I asked if I could either get XP or just ship me a pc with a wiped drive for an extra fee. Fscking amazing!! So off I went to apple.com....
Dell = Bags of douche
The reason the wireless phone service price hasn't changed is because if it got any cheaper, the network would become saturated because people wouldn't self-limit their phone usage as much. The reason that all phone companies charge about the same is more due to the physics of radio communication than collusion. I guarantee that if Cingular could charge half of what they do and still make a profit, they would, because they'd put all the others out of business, and it's a very competitive market.
Is that why Cingular has some of the highest prices for Data/Text messaging? Hmm.. seems to me that your guarantee is horsepucky..
VZW/Sprint and Tmobile All have cheaper and better data plans and cheaper and much better text plans.. Hell VZW and Sprintel's Evdo network is tremendously bigger than Cingy's comparable 3G(HSDPA) network so Cingular is actually charging people more for less..
I think the FCC only allowed two sat. licenses to be available.. But I suppose they might be forced to give one up..But I doubt the FCC would refund them the license cost so they get to resell that one(yay!) but then..who would dump billions of dollars into starting another sat radio company? This isn't some small business or some widget maker wanting to compete with the sole widget provider.. There is a HUGE barrier to enter the industry.. 2 providers is.much better for consumers..
if what I read is correct, *Cisco* did not trademark iPhone but a small company they have pruchased since then had the trademark. All of this is nonsense anyways.. even before any announcement EVERYONE was giving this mythical device the "iPhone" name. And that was not Apple's doing.. At this point if apple renames it..Everyone will STILL refer to apple phone as the iPhone. Cisco was trying to leverage the trademark for a foot in apples door and apple said no.. so they sued.. Whoop dee do.. I don't see what the fuss is about.. in the end it will still end up being referred to as the iphone and cisco will still have 3 people that kow thier product is also called the iphone.. but its not a cell phone so no one cares about it..
Yes but Cisco's "iPhone" trademark is worth about 1.50US. No one other than a small percentage of people involved with or having an unhealthy interest in tech even knew about thier product.. So Whatever they get from Apple will be obscenely more than what they would have gotten themselves out of it... I hope apple puts up just enough fight to bleed them of some money and then changes the name to imobile or something to coincide with the Cingular change and everyone will still refer to Apple's product as the iphone..
If it's a GSM phone, it'll suffer the same poor audio quality, low data speeds, and structural penetration issues that all 900mHz phones suffer from. If it's a CDMA phone it'll HAVE to be sold through Verizon or Sprint directly, since those carriers' networks are locked on their end, no the phone's. If it's sold "unbranded" you'll lose half the market right away, especially the high-end users, the vast majority of which are on Verizon or Sprint, for the data options...
Actually.. there are about 10 times as many GSM users worldwide than on CDMA.. And forgive me but VZW/Sprint also use 850/1900 bands just like Cingular/Tmobile et al so I guess the "structual penetration issues" aren't simply a GSM problem... as for Data options.. Cingular is rolling out 7.2Mbps service on thier "3G" network starting in January 07 (its a software upgrade so it won't require a long buildout like UMTS). So I find it hard to believe that "high-end" users are going to be beholden to VZW or Sprint (who has the industry's highest churn rate) for data options..
Umm, excuse me for being a buttinsky.. but I beleive second quote is in fact FROM INQ reader BRAD STEFFLER MD!!! Who may, in fact start off a quote with "As a physician who uses PCs for image review before I perform surgery.."
It seems some Slashdot "readers" also have the wrong title..
well, acording to Cingy they are completely merged now so there are no "att" towers anymore.. or so they say.. but on most phones you could manually choose the ATT tower.. besides one bar usually works for a phone call..
.. but the product was created from conception to execution rather quickly
Well... it usually helps when you purchase a prexisting product (toshiba gigabeat) and start from there..
..and a interesting idea in the wireless sharing of songs
Wow..you have an interesting idea of what interesting is.. I think most people would see thier implementation as ummm Worthless and/or insulting.
But I guess Fanbois will be fanbois..
Furthermore.. didn't I read a short while ago about Apple taking away the 4th spot of the top 5 personal computer sales... from you guessed it.. Gateway.. Wierd..
Not bad..I like the "folding" and the varied image quality..nice.. I'll have to play with it a little more.. But at this point I still like the built in browser better..
This woman may have been the catalyst, but the potential for suicide was already there. Should society as a whole walk around on eggshells to avoid whatever trigger will cause the already mentally unstable to go over the edge?

Or just ban the douche. Its your call Lynn Doyle
There were less fatal accidents when the speed limit was 55.
Turn-abouts are safer than intersections.
Less fatalities @ 55? I don't think so http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx

I can confirm this story. I am firstborn and have two younger sisters. They are both idiots.
